democracynow.org - Soon after President Richard Nixon resigned in 1974, Seymour Hersh got a call from a source at a California hospital. He learned that Nixon had beaten his wife so severely in 1974 that she sought treatment at an emergency room. Hersh did not report the story. Years later, he received criticism for this choice. We speak with Sy Hersh in New York City. He says of his decision not to report on Nixon beating his wife, “I was obtuse to the notion that it was a crime. … I didn’t get it.

@@aliceinwonder8978 - Did Biden and Trump assault women while they were president? If not, then it has nothing to do with this story. Would the secret service stand by and watch a president beat his wife? I say no. If nothing else, they could use the excuse that they were protecting the president from injuring himself.

I have no idea whether or not Nixon actually beat his wife. However, I can plainly see that his two children (Julie and Trisha) remained devoted and protective of him for the rest of his life. To this day, no one in his family or his personal staff ever spoke ill of him. If Nixon was a wife beater, I would expect that someone in his inner circle would have distanced themselves from him. I have not seen any evidence of this. Conversely, Ronald Reagan’s children distanced themselves from their father. On the other hand, there were rabid Nixon haters in the press and the Washington Establishment, akin to the Trump haters of today, who, if Nixon did a good deed would spin it as an evil deed. Without further information, I am inclined to go with what Nixon’s children have to say.

Mr Hersh takes too long to get to the point. In fact, I don't think there is a point to the story. Is anyone in doubt that we are governed by thugs? Noam Chomsky makes a very good case that all of our post WWII presidents have been war criminals. Is any crime worse than a war of aggression? Isn't that worse than beating a wife? Because our presidents are well attired and usually pleasant in public are they less criminal, less thuggish? Were Bill Clinton and Barack Obama not well attired, mannered thugs. Were Ronald Reagan and the Bushes not thugs. Of course, they all were and are, including Donald Trump. Ask a Yemeni parent watching his child die!

@@JohnSmith-vu6zd Where do we start? How about interfering with the 1968 peace talks in Vietnam to help his election chances, which led to 7 more years of that war. Or how about bringing the conniving war criminal Henry Kissinger into his cabinet, along with a bunch of other spineless yes-men? Or, I dunno, all of the watergate coverup? Or let's get personal: how about occasionally beating his wife, Pat? And then of course milking his reputation by writing a bunch of forgettable books after leaving office. You get the idea. He wasn't the worst president we've ever had, but that bar is admittedly pretty low. But he was a sad, pathetic, closed-minded and violent drunk - and his poor choices forever tarnished whatever remaining sense of 'respect' the American presidency had left. That's the one rare thing Democrats and Republicans agreed on back then, and should today.

@@VideoAmericanStyle I cannot condone the beating of his wife or his self medicating/drinking when he should’ve been totally focused on the job. I’m not convinced him “scuttling” peace talks was anything other than political manoeuvring so as to not be upstaged on the eve of the election. Johnson had years to end the war and Nixon was elected to do it, which he did, albeit not quickly as he should’ve. As for Watergate, this was totally justified as it turns out Nixon was ahead of everyone else in understanding that the Democratic Party was a hotbed of commies.
