How to Draw: Foreshortening with the Coil Technique

Hey everyone, this lesson covers the 'coil technique' and how I use it when dealing with foreshortening. Something I forgot to mention that is also very important for foreshortening is overlapping lines. I don't explain it but you can see when I erase areas that I try to make sure that the closer lines overlap the more distant lines to create the illusion of depth. Anyway, hope it's still helpful.

That's really interesting. It's almost like there's a kind of "conservation of mass" happening where if a hand gets bigger the rest of the arm has to get smaller. This is exactly the sort of stuff I wish I'd had in my drawing classes. "Just practice" is of course essential, but it doesn't give guidance like this.

I think the reason this is so helpful is because the coiling creates almost perfect cross-contour lines that make the figure look much more convincing and thus easier for the mind to rotate as a 3d object instead of 2d.

It's....it's all so simple now! You don't understand. Foreshortening was the bane of my existance, I couldn't do ANYTHING involving any sort of perspective outside of eye level. And I tried everything, I just couldn't grasp it without a photo reference and, as a comic artist, there's not too many exact photo references for things like dragons or talking mongeese running away from ghosts. Now I have the cover I want, and it's all thanks to you! It's beautiful! I love you!

I think this works so effectively because your essentially always drawing contour lines so your able to build something up in 3D. Where as drawing normally requires the ability to subtly manipulate your lines to create 3D perspective

I was always the top of all my art classes, and when I wanted to do something trickier, ie. fore-shortening, I was always shit outta luck. My teachers would always tell me to either just reposition something("You'll learn that next year/in college/etc..."...which I never did), or to just try something else. It was infuriating. And at 27 years old, with YEARS of experience, FINALLY I have my answers!!!! Seriously, why can't art teachers be like you...?

The technique he's explaining, in coils, is actually called a "mesh". Meshes are 3D objects on a 2D surface that have the basic 3D wire-frame or skeleton of the object and yes, they help a LOT.

I thought I made this method yesterday, but today I realized that someone already did it. A really cool method that helps me understand how things will look in perspective. Thanks, it helped me figure out what was missing in my drawing technique.

People kept recommending this to watch, and I was kind of "Meh" about it. Drawing tutorials never seem to give you much. They just sort of go, "Here's what I do, now you do it." And never really explain HOW. They never explain how to think or what to watch out for so you don't absorb anything. This, however, was flipping amazing and I can't wait to try it! I've always felt like I've sucked at foreshortening and as a result I've fallen into the habit of drawing mundane poses so I wouldn't have to worry about it, because all I ever was otherwise was frustrated. This was very very interesting. I know I have played around with circles before, but I havent thought about drawing humans with them! Also the circle thing that you used to "calculate" where the legs/hands would go when rotated was clever!

I saw a post on tumblr _years_ ago about this tutorial, and thought "cool, but not _that_ helpful" and moved on (everyone was just totally freaking out, y'know? And this is _tumblr_ I'm talking about here, freakouts happened over minor things all the time) It looked simple and I had the fallacy of thinking "I can do that" Finally I found the dang post again on Pinterest, looked this up, and was following along, thinking "yeah, okay, this _is_ really good, but I still don't get the hype" bc I'm pretty good at thinking in 3d, so "maybe more artists than I thought struggle with that?" And then I got to the part of the curve/circle and adjusting it and _physically_ fucking felt a switch flip over in my brain like "oh... _OH._ " So what I'm trying to say is that this is really rally good and definitely deserves all the hype it gets

You know, in high school I think I discovered this technique by mistake but disregarded the 3d-like effect it gave. This was really important for me to see, as just seeing this technique explained and in action has really opened my eyes to it once again and how I can apply it to my own work.

Woahh I can finally draw people in different angles while moving!!! AMAZING i always had trouble imagining exactly how my characters would look doing certain motions. But this makes it so much easier

I'm self taught and I have taken a few art classes to see what they are like and they teach none of the important stuff like this. Subscribed, you're videos are really thorough and I thought I had everything down but this video taught me some really useful stuff. The only thing I never really got was how big to make the object in the foreground in comparison to the objects more in the background, I always just eyeballed it.
