Thorpy FX Scarlet Tunic
The Scarlet Tunic is designed to capture the sound of feel of the Selmer Treble and Bass amplifier that Syd Barrett used on those early Pink Floyd albums. With impressive authenticity, the Scarlet Tunic produce the low end sag and natural compression of a vintage tube amp, with dynamic feel and responsiveness. To be used either as a pre-amp platform or a conventional overdrive.

This pedal is very tempting. I have a 65 Amp Marquee with a Treble N Bass derived preamp channel, but usually I set it for clean tones. This might be the OD channel for that amp.

Adrian doesn't build bad pedals. Even back in the day when he was producing clones as a sideline his pedals were at least as good as the models he was 'copying'. When it comes to things like the Scarlet Tunic I have to acknowledge that Adrian has designed a pedal that replicates the sounds of those old amps. Whether I like those sounds is a different matter. The pedal wasn't made for me. Respect to ThorpyFX and to you Bjorn for demoing the Scarlet Tunic as it was probably intended to sound.

There's nothing complicated at doing as good as stompboxes you're replicating : there is no magic mojo in electronics, but you may have issues at finding some obsolete parts (no more produced) as NOS (new old stock) that will bring some special grain or features... One of the main issues are germanium transistors

@@kevinjohnbetts Well, all I can tell you is that, in my country, kids do electronics starting 6th grade at school, as part of their technology course... most of the stompboxes are 6th or 5th grade level. From 2004 to 2009, I was one of the main staffers of the then largest DIY for guitar Francophone forum, we had more than 12k members and taught countless people how to build their gear... I'm personally responsible for the reverse engineering of some of the coolest gear, some very challenging like a chorus/flanger that resisted for 30 years... until I was requested to repair one, some multi-channel tube amps etc... Now, OK, if you're into building the most advanced stuff, it's not really for beginners, but there is a huge huge lotsa stuff you can do, your first ones are likely to be a FuzzFace or a TubeScreamer as they're freaking easy, a 6th grade kid can perfectly start with electronics with these as first ever device built... And it's even easier as there are kits available where you get ready-made PCBs, and can get pre-drilled boxes too... The most impressive marketplace is here : www.musikding.de/guitar-effect-kits-amp-kits these are well known too: generalguitargadgets.com/ buildyourownclone.com/ Want the famous Klon Centaur overdrive? You may get the kit for about €40... Note : if you're into building the Violet Ram'shead Muff, you better just order the PCB and go to the Kitt Rae website : he measured all the values of his original one which differ from the official schematics, you will also need carbon-comp resistors, all caps are ceramic but the 100nF ones which are polyester... If you don't do this, forget about sounding similar to Dave's... If you're more into the very rare Muff OpAmp AKA "ICBM" used by Billy Corgan or Adrian Belew, I'm the one you need to make it genuine sounding: kits usually use boutique grade parts... When you make fuzzes, you don't want these, you want dirty sounding parts ! To be frank, I'd recommand to get a 19" 1U rack enclosure: if you go for the Alpha 9mm pots, you can stuff more than a hundred on the frontplate and you have room for 3 layers of PCB... Time to play Tetris with circuits but guess what? you can easily stuff a huge pedalboard inside! You can as well use pedals you bought and re-box these too... You can include the Scarlet Tunic's circuit inside too if you want By doing so, you can have a setup that is kept into a 6U SKB RLX/ROTO flycase you can move like a Samsonite suitcase and that will have nothing to envy to Gilmour's on Pulse !!! And I can recommand speakers where a single one does the job of a 4x12 "One would wonder why everybody doesn't do it." Maybe becoz... They know shit about electronics? And look, people go on using the Stratoaster while there are guitars that are better than ANY Strat ever built, even €10-20k+ CSMH ones or Dave's Black Strat, or Hendrix's Isabella... And guess what? Such a Hyper-Strat costs about €3000 as new unless you want artsy paint or special options... You can even play Money's 3rd solo, the classic trem bar stays in tune as well as a Floyd Rose and you'll never need any setup. Got my 1st one in 1997... Some told me : "You'll see, one always return to the Strat"... Well, after 27 years, still not Thus, it may happen : buy me Dave's original Black Strat! I promise I will play it... For 3-4 weeks... Then she'll return at Christie's because 1st, I have smth better so I don't need it, then, with $4 millions, I can build a freaking recording studio, in fact, my biggest issue is the facility, I'm as well geared as many "indie" producers...
@kevinjohnbetts
@kevinjohnbetts Ай бұрын
@@harounel-poussah6936 Strats work. I have several, plus other guitars. As for pedals, I get the point. Like all electronic circuits it's only components connected together in a specific order. I own a Nux and a Nordvang which are based on identical circuits. I could gig either but one has vastly more range than the other. If we accept not all components are created equal, even if they are supposed to be, then we get into the reasons for some pieces of equipment working well whilst others get thrown out. Putting everything together is a craft, whatever equipment we are talking about, and the difference between good and very good is small but discernible.

No need for vintage ones! Actually, you'd even be surprised by the very cheap ones that were produced in China. Got both a DE-56D and a DC59 with the Clapton psychedelia paint for cheaper than dirt when Thomann destocked the MiC ones... Well, except the need to replace the tuners by real Kluson ones, they REALLY have the sound... BTW, the DE-56D is better than the '59 : better neck, better treble access and having a lipstick-humbucker in bridge posn is really valuable and having the three coils in series allows serious garage sound... These Danos are made from Masonite, it's compressed sawdust mixed with water then put under pressure to extract the water... There may be PUs differences but, you know... Lipsticks were designed to be cheap, you don't really need to pay big for overpriced Seymour Duncan lipstick PU. They returned the production in Korea, well, they end with nicer finishes, thus, MiC ones weren't badly made, in fact, the Clapton one was even hand-painted... Unfortunately, the price has doubled, which is a bit sad as... With the MiC ones, I often happened to recommand these to non-metal beginners : I already knew the U56 for a while when I took profit of the... €170 price for mine (and, IIRC, €230 or 235 for the '59 "Clapton"!). In fact, I bought the '59 in despair of having been snubbed from a superb 2nd hand Korean DC-3 made before the Chinese production, a sparkle green one... In fact, I'd recommand to opt for at least 3 lipstick PUs, you definitively want to be able to have 3 coils in series with a germanium fuzz...

I think the main reason for him to go over to Hiwatts in late 1969 was because they started to play bigger venues. And, bands like Jethro Tull and The Who had also started using Hiwatt by that point which must have influenced Floyd.

Don't be too sure everybody prefers the HiWatt tone to the Selmer, as well as there are old PF fans that are far from loving anything starting with DSOTM if not Obscured by Clouds...

@@gilmourishofficial It's very likely the case (bigger venues)... IIRC, he used 10, maybe even 14 HiWatt and twice as much 4x12" when they did Earl's Court for the DSOTM tour and he wasn't miked into the PA (Earl's Court = 19,000 seats)... Thus, in terms of raw power, Hendrix was already using the Marshall Major (200W) and gosh, with the 2x15 loaded with the two JBL D130 the Voodoo Chile "blues" of 15 minutes on Electric Ladyland, it's still WOW for me

Although they struggled for a few years to find their new sound after Syd left, I think we can agree that they grew into something much bigger. Still, that first album has been so influencial. On both contemporaey bands and not least the British new wave and alternative pop scene in the 80s.

“The” Pink Floyd in 1966-1967 created some of the most ground breaking and musically psych of their day, which is saying a lot considering the competition. The Meddle through The Final Cut era Pink Floyd created some of the most memorable music of all time, but that shouldn’t devalue their groundbreaking early work with Syd.

I’m sorry to say this but Peter your views on Syd I used to hold as well. I came to Floyd backwards starting in the 90s. And when I finally time-travelled back to 1967 couldn’t quite understand why Piper sounded as it did, I criticised Syd. Then my muso friend pointed out that Piper was recorded at the same time as Pepper at Abbey Road. BUT it was Syds FIRST album (the Beatles 7th or 8th). My friend kept on saying don’t worry as you experience more of life, as you start to tire of Comfortably Numb like you did your last girlfriend/boyfriend (what?! Blasphemy never!) you’ll go back to Piper. And I eventually did. The musical sophistication is astonishing. Syd’s chord/rhythms are astonishing. The lyricism is astonishing. You could replace the bassist, but not Syd or Rick Wright. I love Roger Waters lyrics, but he’s no poet. But I really wish George Martin had produced Piper, and not Norman Smith who using the same gear could not bring forth Martin’s genius, so I do agree the production values are not as sophisticated as other albums in late 1967, but fgs it was their first album! First time in the studio. In another multiverse Syd didn’t leave. Roger left. Ah what astronomy the music of Floyd would have been 🤩
