Күн бұрын

In this video, I travel on C-Sets C1 and C5 on its last journey in passenger service. It was the 6:09pm service from Circular Quay to Campbelltown via Sydenham and Revesby. The day is Friday 26th February and this was the last day that C-Sets operated in normal passenger services.
I believe this was the second last service. The very last service was the 8:24pm from Central to Liverpool and C-Sets C7 and C10 operated this service.
It was quite a party onboard this C-set (often known as Choppers) as you'll see when you watch this video.
So if you feel sad that the Chopper C-Sets are no longer in passenger service, then I hope this video will bring back fond memories of these iconic and slightly quirky chopper trains!

Hi Paul, Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. I remember seeing those C-Set trains quite well. From memory, when first arriving at Campbelltown station from Melbourne on the XPT in early 2000, our first sighting of a Sydney suburban train was a C-Set coming in next to us at the station. It is hard to believe they have now since gone. I also remember as a young child visiting Circular Quay station just after the station opened. it looked like a station of way in the future back in those days. My first ever trip on the East Hills extension was when we visited Sydney in early 2000 and the XPT used the East Hills line coming into Sydney, due to track works on the main line. Yes, I have walked through between carriages on both single and double deck trains in Sydney years ago on many occasions. A bit "hair raising" to say the least!!! Incidentally, I used to have relatives living at Revesby. Anyway, take care. Robert.

Thanks Robert, Glad you enjoyed it! - It must have been cool to see Circular Quay when it first opened. The Melbourne XPT now travels via Revesby, rather than Strathfield. I think this change was made in 2017. Yes will miss the C Sets. Cheers Paul

Hi Paul. Thanks for this video and I will say that I was initially very much against these when they were introduced because of the fixed seating. I did however enjoy the air-conditioning which always seemed to work exceptionally well on these trains. I am tall and find that sitting on the upper deck is uncomfortable as I have to hunch over to enjoy the views from the windows. The lower deck is better for me. The walking between cars while moving does seem to appeal to the young boys, however there was a tragedy many years ago ( which was not made public). Two boys were standing outside to have a cigarette and both were leaning against the small metal dividers when the train suddenly lurched and one boy grabbed the chain for support but as you can see in this video, the chain is not tensioned and he fell as the chain could offer him no support. He fell backwards onto the track below and unfortunately didn't survive. I know this as I was friends with the guard who was working the train at the time. Only 56 of these carriages were produced and were found to have asbestos in the drivers cabs. Thanks again Paul and I look forward to your next video.

Thanks again, Paul. An interesting history of the C-sets. More fixed seats but the train looked so new and clean inside.I understand about asbestos being one reason for abolition and a good point about the open space between the carriages. the closing in between carriages later seems a big improvement.

They found asbestos in K sets and v sets within the last 4-5 years. Between the K sets and C sets there were alot less C sets so it made sense to get rid of those due to the last batch of waratah series 2 coming into service and the C sets were more of a inbetween train from the K set to the tangara

The C sets K sets and S sets are all iconic, one of the three (cant remember which) is my earliest memory of going on a train in Sydney. I caught it from circular quay in 2012. The sound and smell of train reminds me of Sydney and its just not the same as the newer trains. I really hope they keep the K sets around for the foreseeable future because for me these trains remind me of a different time in my life and they are a nice bit of nostalgia.
@TransportVlog

That trip between carriages? Sheer bloody luxury compared with the red rattlers we used to travel on when I was at high school in the late '50's. But the big event in the C set surely is the pulse-width modulation (what you call chopper control), possible after the design of the gate turn off thyristor, a huge advance on the original thyristor, which turned on and latched until power was removed, the GTO's turned off with minimal gate current. One day we will get HST's in NSW with 22,000 volt AC catenaries and fully regenerative AC motors; Siemens, Alstom and CAF all make them, including tilt versions. Just requires a little political imagination, and a lack of diesel fuel. It will happen!

Glad you liked the slow pans! I agree, the C Sets seem to have plenty of life left in them, even though they are 35 years old! From my understanding the reasons include unreliability, expense of maintenance, and lack of spare parts. I reckon the K-sets will go in the next 18 months, as NIF trains replace Oscar trains, which will be transferred to the Suburban network.

C6 and 10 did have a final stint after this together . C1 and C5 did a bit of work to Olympic Park from Lidcombe separately on rotation too into early May . I had my photo taken with each of them during this time. A family in the Sydney Electric Train Society bought four cars and plated them as C1 with a revised consist . Sydney Trains didn't keep any . Two cars went to the fire service for drill purposes . I did travel in 3588 on the day of this video being recorded to Campbelltown . K-set will go out of service as well, with the new waratah's and the introduction of the NIF for intercity service they will most likely repurpose the oscar's for the suburban network and will no longer need the K's. Also from a maintenance point of view, it would be easier to get rid of the C's as they have less of them rather than to have a bit of each set.

What makes you say they "were the worst trains to drive."? Better than an S or K set in the dry, as long as no regen brakes dropped out whilst braking making for a rough ride, and the regen brake was great when it stayed in. Could hit Erskineville 2 pfm in 3 notch EP at 50kph and pull up where an S or K set needed 5 notch EP. Also better than a Tangara in the wet as you could notch a C set out (in a fashion) where in a Tangara you can't.
