Pure? What does it mean?
The tongues of hell
Are dull, dull as the triple
Tongues of dull, fat Cerberus
Who wheezes at the gate. Incapable
Of licking clean
The aguey tendon, the sin, the sin.
[Oh, auto-da-fé!]
[The purple men, gold-crusted, thick with spleen]
[Sit with their crooks and hooks and stoke the light.]
The tinder cries.
The indelible smell
Of a snuffed candle!
Love, love, the low smokes roll
From me like Isadora’s scarves, I’m in a fright
One scarf will catch and anchor in the wheel,
Such yellow sullen smokes
Make their own element. They will not rise,
But trundle round the globe
Choking the aged and the meek,
The weak
Hothouse baby in its crib,
The ghastly orchid
Hanging its hanging garden in the air,
Devilish leopard!
Radiation turned it white
And killed it in an hour.
Greasing the bodies of adulterers
Like Hiroshima ash and eating in.
The sin. The sin.
Darling, all night
I have been flickering, off, on, off, on.
The sheets grow heavy as a lecher’s kiss.
Three days. Three nights.
Lemon water, chicken
Water, water make me retch.
I am too pure for you or anyone.
Your body
Hurts me as the world hurts God. I am a lantern -
My head a moon
Of Japanese paper, my gold beaten skin
Infinitely delicate and infinitely expensive.
Does not my heat astound you! And my light!
All by myself I am a huge camellia
Glowing and coming and going, flush on flush.
I think I am going up,
I think I may rise -
The beads of hot metal fly, and I love, I
Am a pure acetylene
Virgin
Attended by roses,
By kisses, by cherubim,
By whatever these pink things mean!
Not you, nor him
Nor him, nor him
(My selves dissolving, old whore petticoats) -
To Paradise.

"Does not my heat astound you?" Connor OMalley recently did a recording of this poem that I really enjoyed.

God, I love the way she depicts her mystical after life journey!! I like listening to this poem, and I like hearing the tone of victory in the last stanzas. This woman chose death out of her free will, she perceived it as the way to self liberation...she knew that there is something beyond it, may her soul rests in peace.

If I've killed one man, I've killed two, the same vampire who said he was you.

Sylvia Plath is a Seraphim angel in this poem... a seraphim angel in hell, hell is also earth... the speaker is the light bringer, the light bringer is descending into the chariots....

What are Isadora's scarves if not the ego, or the superego loosening it's grip. I agree not narcistic be cause she suffers as the hot baby, she identifies with ....victims...but too tired of her pain..

Her romanticism of death in this piece today would have been a clear sign of her suicidal tendencies. Depression is a selfish, sometimes almost narcissistic thing.

Lol. You think it wasn't back then? I mean clearly she had tried to kill herself 3 times before she killed herself. This is a poem you should try to take in: the best often die by their own hand just to get away, and those left behind can never quite understand why anybody would ever want to get away from them ___ Ofcs to so many others what she says and what that poem says spekas of narcissism even though the people that uttered these words didn't show anything else in their life that would suggest that. Sources speak of a compassionate wanderer interested in others and the world who despite all tried to do her duties as a mother the best she could until life consumed her. She could be angry and she did think highly of herself and wanted praise. A paradox who would love to help people and who suffered when others suffered but at the same time detested the helpless for their weakness of character and form. Certainly a complex individual and not simply someone full of herself.

how can depression be selfish if it is a mental illness?

@@ValentinaTeodorani No one wants to admit that they are selfish. But I can tell you that it is. Even if you give to the poor everyday and don't eat meat or dairy because you love animals, depression makes you self absorbed.
