Puss in Boots: The Last Wish was such an amazing movie. It felt like it came out of the blue to absolutely explode in the movie scene. Wolf has been taking the internet by storm and it's easy to see why.
Take a look as we break down all the symbolism associated with his attire, weapons and actions.
I'm sure there's something you'll miss!
The review will be going up here: • Puss in Boots The Last...
I made a short AMV here: • Wolves. - Puss in Boot...

there is one thing that is subtle but can be noticed on the second time watching, when the people are making a wave (the scene before the giant takes the bell in the fight), you can see death at the top left corner. That gives the quote, "I was there to witness all of them, each. frivolous, end" a literal meaning that he was there to witness it

What I like about death is how he is a wolf. Wolves are often viewed as pure evil or monsters, but that's not true they are docile and timid and rarely go after humans or people unless provoked or otherwise and will often flee if the person fights back. This is the case for Death, he is after Puss cause it's basically cause Puss doesn't value his life that much and is careless. But when Puss shows he is willing to fight for his life, Death leaves him.

It's small, but I wanna point it out anyway, even if it's after knowing who the Wolf really is, as I just really like the scene. Death's warning to Puss in the end, after he lets him live since he was now fighting for the life he's come to cherish, and was truly humbled. "We'll meet again" and Puss' response of "I know." A small little warning that just because he's escaped death for now, he can't run from him forever, as he comes for all eventually. IDK why, it was just the cherry on top of everything. Death is cold, but he is not unkind. He simply got tired of Puss' arrogant shit, and wanted to remind him that he - like everyone else - is not immortal.

Just want to add one obvious thing: the wolf himself as death. Wolves as creature themselves not only are extremely dangerous predators but also show a lot of paradoxical traits that link them to the idea of death materialised: they hunt both alone or in packs, they can endure hunger for a long time but will also take down preys that are impossible for them to consume whole. These could lead to people making the impression that 1. they are everywhere and there's no way to hide if one targeted you, 2. they can be immortal (starving won't kill them) and 3. they might kill for fun(if point 2 is real). Combining these its not hard to see why wolves are a common villain in old commoners' fantasies, Grimm himself also cited that "wolves are the most evil animal". Which means its only fitting that a wolf being one of the most feared animals will find its way into fairy tales as some of the most sinister beings in the stories
@xdayadx
@xdayadx Жыл бұрын
Some really great points -the quote from Grimm regarding them as "the most evil animal" is interesting considering, as you put, how they are portrayed in fairytales.
@rolandswift4311
@rolandswift4311 Жыл бұрын
Another possible reason for their common depiction as something to be feared that I can think of is their howling. The point of old fairytales was usually to teach lessons, the nightly howling of the wolf becomes a constant reminder of the dangers that lurk outside places of safety as kids are taught to fear the creature that makes the sound. This could actually line up very well with the way Death announces his presence by whistling, a simple but ever-present sound that becomes such a symbol of danger for Puss that it alone is enough to make his fur stand on end.

But Wolves also are docile and timid, they often flee when humans attack them first and can be friendly when they aren't hungry.

@@gamerstheater1187 In the modern day after learning that humans are techicaly above them in the food chain; yes, they will recognize that it's in their best interest to run however.... less developed areas like Alaska and in the time periods these stories were written and set in, wolves don't always tend to be as hesitant nor as timid. and in terms of them being friendly.... you're kind of rolling the dice on that one, something parents would be telling these stories specifically to discourage. If the wolf you approach happens to be hungry, or happens to have cubs nearby, or happens to just be in a bad mood, it can be extremely dangerous, and you won't know until it's too late.

Death is represented in different ways, or rather faces but in Christianity or similar monodeity religions wolves are associated with death same with black birds like ravens, crows and vultures. Death's main weapon(s) is the one God gave it, the Scythe used to cut down after a life cycle is done. This weapon is the A+ for the Dark Knight job, better than sword so any Dark Knight who cannot Scythe is not ultimate. You could say such a weapon is a matter of life and death!

I know I am late but there are two more symbols. Death's whistling and Spanish accent reminds me of a folkloric being from Venezuela called El Silbon (The Whistler) who if you hear him whistling, you know that he is near and coming for you. Also, when Puss is in the hospital and counting his deaths he guesses he died 4 times. 4 is the number of death in Asian countries like China and Japan.

One theory I've been wondering about: Death holds strong morality and places value in nature's laws; so, by taking another's life by force, won't he (it?) be breaking the rules of said morals?
@xdayadx
@xdayadx Жыл бұрын
He does address this a bit when Puss says he is cheating. Death seems to bend the rules of his own morality specifically because of how Puss takes his lives for granted and is so arrogant when death is concerned.
@Prototype-357
@Prototype-357 Жыл бұрын
He's definetly bending the rules a little bit but he's just that pissed off. Puss has nine lives when most people only get one and he lost 8 of them to stupid means, Death thinks he won't value his last one either but instead of waiting for Puss to die normally Death decided to take it personally, and I do mean 'personally' in all meanings of the word, because he got tired of Puss laughing in his face.

To quote Final Destination "Death doesn't like to be cheated." Puss already has a huge advantage over most people, having 9 lives instead of the normal 1, and he's taken each and every one for granted while also laughing in Death's face, thinking he's invincible. He even says how he thinks it's ridiculous that cats have 9 lives. If I was Death, at that point, I'd take matters into my own hands as well. If someone else is already breaking the rules, and as heavily as they are, why not start breaking them yourself and giving them a taste of their own medicine?
@ImEin

People have already answered it, but when he is in the cave of lost souls, he acknowledges that he is cheating but only because Puss has been cheating him for his past 8 lives and was STILL in the process of trying to gain back another 9.
