Copper is a trace mineral, which means it’s only needed in small amounts. Yet, deficiencies do occur. And most symptoms of deficiency are closely related to the roles copper plays.
For example, since copper helps your body absorb iron, a copper deficiency could lead to anemia. As a result, you may feel tired and weak. Fatigue may also arise because copper is needed to make ATP (a.k.a. cellular energy).
Other possible symptoms include:
Brittle bones
Cognitive dysfunction
Frequent infections
Poor balance/unsteady gait
Pale skin
Easy bruising
Premature gray hair
Loss of muscle tone
Stunted growth
Abnormal cholesterol
High blood sugar
Poor blood clotting function (due to low blood platelets)
Chronic low white blood cell count (neutropenia)

You've pinpointed so many signs I'm experiencing....thought it was anaemia. I was scared of taking copper but I've had instant results taking a supplement I had on hand and will now be adressing my diet. I was taking zinc regulary, I'm on keto and I.F. - but I forgot about copper. It's all about balance. Thanks doc 👍

Good job. Apparently the Zinc will cause the copper to get bound up instantly. Be very careful with it...

I have the genetic mutation MTHFR. I’m realizing the intricate web between B vitamins, homocystine, iron and copper. I’ve been going around in a circle with this for sometime now and can’t get any health professionals on board to perform a comprehensive investigation and treatment plan in the order that it would be helpful.… Of course, everyone says take more vitamins, don’t take vitamin C, etc. And I love when they tell me to take Sam E. Which makes me absolutely sick. I saw a Nuro ophthalmologist talking about central vision being affected and blurriness with iron overload/copper deficiency.… And how this can look like a B vitamin deficiency. I can see how all these are interconnected but it’s really difficult to sort out. And I do have the symptoms that the ophthalmologist was talking about. I don’t want to just start taking a bunch of copper supplementation, but I think I have malabsorption issues as far as getting it from my regular foods. Anytime I have a problem with my health, I just go out into the information Pool here on KZfaq or the Internet because that’s really all I have :-)

Try copper, 5mg or so per day, for 2 weeks. Drink milk if you feel nauseous, and you might feel a bit sick but then you will see results in a few days. you might need to take the odd zinc supplement, and i use a mineral solution to top up too. also, vitamin c a few times while taking copper is good for copper absorption

The doctor needs to define terms. Bio-cooper (ceruloolasmin-bound copper, or Cp-Cu) is far different than otherwise bound copper. One word for two very different copper states is insufficient. The doctor is talking about low Cp-Cu. Low Cp-Cu means ironnoverload in the tissues because Cp-Cu expresses as ferro-oxidase which manages iron in the human body. Cp-Cu is also what manages oxygen in cytochrome c oxidative and ALL other oxidase enzymes, Low Cp-Cu also basically means that your magnesium will be low, too. Ceruloplasmin-biund copper looks to be the most sophisticated enzyme in the human body. Morley Robbins is the bio-copper expert.

All these tests for bio-copper are basically tests for high iron in the tissues.

I agree on unbound / bound copper ....but, Morley Robbins is not the expert 😂 ...he learned about boron, biotin, vitamin A from me ...there is much to learn when it comes to understanding copper and iron metabolism issues in the body.

Which supplements are good for copper deficiency? How much to take for an average adult?
@randyj508

Dried cow liver. Copper without the vit A to make cerulplasm is can be harmful. Liver has all the cofactors. I would start slowly and level off when you feel feel better. 3-6 capsules is 1/2 to 1 once daily should get you lots of copper.

I learned to eat liver. Suoolements are waaaaay over priced for what you get. Grass fed/finished liver from humanely raised cows. All organ meats are good. Whole food vcomolex vtamin C is good. Bee pollen is good for B vitamins and has some copper, but is also loaded with iron. Stop blocking copper absorption with hormone D supplements, ascorbic acid, HFCS, glyphosate, and low magnesium. You also need animal fat to best absorb copper, and you want to avoid chronic stress and zinc supplementation, both of which stimulate metallothionein that depletes copper (and other metals).

Is it possible that GI issues (like sibo) capriciously influence copper absorption assuming no genetic factor? Thanks!

A lack of copper reductive bacteria impacts copper absorption. HFCS blocks copper absorption. Hormone D supplements deplete retinol, and retinoic acids derived from retinol are required to energize the ATP7B enzyme that loads copper into its ideal carrier protein ceruloplasmin. It also uses magnesium. This is bio-copper -- the non-toxic gold standard in the human body. Ascorbic acid pulls these copper atoms out of the ceruloplasmin enzyme and deactivates it. Whole food copper comes with four copper atoms of its own.. Copper absorbs with fat, so a low fat diet will block copper absorption. GMO glyphosate chelated copper below the acidity of stomach acid, and will chelate copper even in your liver!!! FAT = From Animal Tissue (humanely raised, grass fed/finished).

Low bio-copper basically means high iron in the tissues. This likely means high iron in the gut, and it also means high oxidative stress and inflammation in the gut, as well as a suboptimal gut bacteria population. Almost all pathogens feed on an iron buffet. You can likely see the negative spiral. I avoid iron filings foods like the modern day plague it is. I donate blood every two months. I eat liver almost daily (as a supplement). I do need to manage stress better, which is hard when iron toxicity crazy is all around you (especially when sensitized tonit). Morley Robbins is the expert, and I think his most recent KZfaq interview revolves around the gut.

@@wellnesspathforme6236 thanks! I saw this interview with ....gut guru (something like that). Do you recommend any studies/textbooks on this matter? My copper always low, urinary 24h ok and ceruloplasmin borderline and too many gut issues!

@@wellnesspathforme6236 hi there, fascinating information… You pointed out that bioavailable copper in foods come with four atoms of its own, so copper supplementation is not effective? what are your thoughts on chlorophyll? I have a high fat diet, but I also have the MTHFR mutation. I suspect I have high iron and low copper. I avoid all forms of HFCS. I had a mineral analysis done once and was told that I was low in lithium, copper and potassium.… That was about three years ago. Copper seems like a tricky mineral :-)
