A tour of a functioning Vanagon transaxle oil filtration and cooler system. Lots of technical detail.
The project is not finished but has been tested on a long trip, 3000 miles, many 100+ deg days, many rough rocky desert roads. Same Weddle pump and Setrab cooler are being used on another van driven 45k miles since 2016 and are quality components.
--- IMPORTANT NOTE ----
I caution against building this system if you are not “the type who goes under the van, for fun”. I also understand some people MUST have it - you know who you are. Clearly it has benefits but “most” people (with 150+ HP engines) should FIRST do a gearbox temperature guage mod, to know when to slow down. Then, if you cannot slow down, building this system is a higher level.
The controls system for example is NOT costly in parts but a reliable assembly requires a skilled assembly. There was a time I was selling the temp controller kits, with its harness, switches, relays, temperature sensor wells, (with its $17 INKBIRD controller) and schematic for $300 (retail). This was just the electric controller system. There will also be hoses, fittings, mounts, wire runs drilling, tapping. And who’s going to maintain the system?
All this…..so you can drive fast & heavy, in hot weather. But the continuous filtering sure feels good….😎
The highest and best value.... is a temperature gauge to learn how fast you can drive in the seasons, and having a clean oil maintenance program. This can be done without pumps, filters and electronic controls, and is not costly.
Clean oil costs only $30. If you have 150HP or if your gearbox is old, you need “race car” level maintenance. Yearly replacement at minimum, or every other time you change the engine oil. At only $30 theres no cheaper insurance. If your gearbox is overloaded by 150+ HP, there’s no question that getting the metal out of your gearbox bearings early/often will pay in longevity. The loads are too high for the film-strength of even the thickest oil you can get. There's no cushion, ANY contamination in the lubricant fatigues/dents your bearing surfaces. The lifetime fluids thing in the owners manual is the reason they wear out in 150k miles rather than lasting 400k, but hanging a big engine on it, is clearly a further assault. Which we will DO of course😎, but ya gotta maintain it like a race-car now.

I looked at the samba post for information and I’m currently setting up a similar system with the bmw cooler and pump. And now I stumbled upon your video. Confirming my thought on a easy “clean” Setup without extensive modifications on the gearbox. Thanks a lot 🤩

Thanks mate, I always knew some clever engineer will sort this problem. I run a vw AFN engine on my syncro gearbox and everybody told my the torque will eat the 4th gear up. Now, that is solved! Thanks again

Cooling and cleanliness will increase the capacity of the gearbox, but probably not by a lot. That TDi is going to beat hard on the gearbox. I’d use a DMF for sure. Driving style has a lot to do with it too. The only real solution is bigger gears, shafts, bearings which are not available. This helps some, but you still gotta “go easy”.😊😊

Tom, this is really great. Excellent explanations and very thoughtful. I play with Subaru gearboxes (we chatted a bit on FB) and have had severe 5th gear tooth wear on my EG25 powered Vanagon. The resulting metal in the box took out bearings and made a mess but I caught it before a catastrophic failure. I monitor temps and see consistent 180-200 degrees above 65 mph. Since I like to experiment too I have thought about installing a nozzle at the 5th gear mesh location. I'm also restoring a Syncro but plan to keep the engine stock...for now. So this is still relevant for me regarding the main shaft bearing.

The load on that passenger car gearbox is much higher now that its pushing the brick. A split-case probably has pre-load holding the bearings, a very different situation than the thermal-fit (VW). Overloaded gears and bearings need much cleaner oil. The main reason we squirt the mesh is to deliver oil to the (VW) mainshaft bearing and to cool the case holding the bearing. This method is 'bolt-on'. Not the best oiling method, but it's "installable" on a van with trans in-car. In the past we thought cooling the gear teeth was important. I placed a temp sensor in the oil spray of 4th gear on a trans in good condition. The oil spray off 4th gear was only 3° hotter than the sump temp. So we have abandoned the notion that 4th gear gets hot. Perhaps gears only get hot on worn-out gearboxes. We don't know, we can only guess.
