I remember being gutted the doctor changed. David Tennant is my favourite doctor. 😊 I was lucky enough to meet him whilst he was filming in my hometown for Dr Who. Blink episode was filmed in my husband’s shop.

I cried at the ending of this episode when I first watched it on transmission, after laughing at the Cassandra body hoping part of the story and being moved by the fate of the grown humans in their pods, who have never felt touch. My kids loved all the body hoping stuff (they were very young when it was first on the telly). I think some people (older fans) forget that DW has to work for all ages including young children when they criticise funny/silly aspects of the stories. They don't have a writer's room in the same way that American series do. A writer is commissioned to write an episode with a short precis from RTD to work from. RTD re-wrote some scripts and tinkered with most of the rest, and also added bits for any series arcs. He wrote a fantastic book called 'The writer's tale' with Benjamin Cook from Dr Who magazine, which is basically a series of long emails between the two written before and during the fourth series. He explains his writing process and ongoing headaches with production and there are sections of the scripts included. There was a second edition that included the specials after the fourth series (but has less of the scripts). I have both. It's a fascinating insight into the writing process and just how stressed RTD was by that point. Luckily his sense of humour survived. The BBC website has just added all the scripts for the entirety of NuWho (including Sarah Jane Adventures, Torchwood etc) a couple of days ago in the BBC writer's room. I'm not sure if you can access the script library from outside the UK but it's here - www.bbc.co.uk/writers/scripts/whoniverse

The ending of this episode still makes me cry! I think it's in the way Cassandra tells her past self that she is so beautiful, in such a sincere way that it manages to connect. I read the moment as the dying Cassandra finally valuing the existence that she had, and recognizing that the prolonging of her existence at the expense of human connection wasn't worth it, that she's seeing herself in a kinder way than she had in the past. And it connected with her past self, that someone was really seeing her and not just sharing empty platitudes, so much so that later on, she still recalls the look of that poor creature who died in her arms, saying that Chip was designed after her favorite pattern. It was her favorite because of that moment, when she told her she was beautiful. It makes me think that we should be kind to ourselves in the present, because it's a bit too late to be kind to our past selves when we're older.

Cassandra is played by Zoë Wanamaker CBE (born 13 May 1949) an American-British actress who has worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, her father is Samuel Wanamaker, CBE, (born Wattenmacker; June 14, 1919 - December 18, 1993) an American actor and director who moved to the United Kingdom after becoming fearful of being blacklisted in Hollywood due to his communist views. He is credited as the person most responsible for saving The Rose Theatre, which led to the modern recreation of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London, where he is commemorated in the name of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, the site's second theatre. The Doctor does let off some people "easily" but the thing is, Cassandra was dying and there was no need to be cruel on top of that. The Doctor gets angry and sometimes utterly destroys a threat, especially if he gave them a chance first, but he is never cruel or vengeful. The closest he ever gets to that is with the Daleks (and maybe 1 other foe), with them he gets right up to that line, but even then he'll hold back and be true to himself. As for the messaging, yeah you guys are spot on as far as I can see. There is a lot in this one, but you seem to have sussed it all out. I love how cats are experimenting on humans, that's a great role reversal. With what you said about children raising other children, this is true also for multi-generational learning too, because kids see someone just a bit older than them, who learned all the Wrong lessons from life, but because they have a perceived swag in the presentation, or these influencers tell them what they want to hear, they just believe a bunch of false things about how to act, behave, treat others, and show respect. Parents have to step up their game or someone else will fill that void. Someone who claims to be an "Alpha" will warp them into evil little trolls. Kids (and I include teens and some 20s peeps in that) are too naive to understand yet that nobody who claims to be an "alpha male" has any idea how to actually be one. People who actually are would never be so needy as to tell people, to boast, to push a narrative. True leaders of the pack do so by example. Their character shines through. Like The Doctor. He never has to prove anything, he just shows up and does the work, he lets his light shine before men with actions. That's why I love this show so much, because The Doctor is such a positive force in fiction and it carries over to the real world, again like Rose said in Parting of the ways, showing a better way of living your life.

Cassandra being Doctor Who’s only trans character until 2018 adds a weird level to her character and death too. I’m honestly very glad for the kind death they gave her, because the first episode she’s in especially reads as pretty transmisogynistic/transphobic on its own. The kindness of her death is humanizing in a sorely needed way-it’s still not GOOD representation by any stretch, but there is something somewhat charming about her. I’m trans, but not a trans woman, so I can’t speak to everything-there’s a really interesting article about it called “Dr. Who’s Only Trans Character is Problematic, but I Still Love Her” that I definitely recommend to anyone wanting to know more!!

Funny you should talk about the Lynch Dune. Because in one of the elevator scenes, they play a snippet of the Dune 1984 main theme. MurrayGold has used Dune 1984 in a few other DoctorWho themes (like the Dalek theme from Parting of the Ways IS the Dune main theme. It’s got the same start and the menacing Daaa data da-daa Dune thing) & I’ve always wondered why he in THIS episode. And thanks to you, now I know. Finally. How you take meaning and relate it back to what happens in the world today or what has happened. Yay, Season 2 and the start of the Tenth Doctor's reign! I like that this first episode has so many parallels to the first trip the Ninth Doctor took Rose on. I think as a viewer, it helps the audience have something famiiar to hold on to while acclimating to this new Doctor. And from a story telling perspective, it serves as a contrast between the two and their relationship with Rose. When Nine (Eccleston) brought Rose to see the literal end of the Earth, he was doing it as a way to give her a similar experience and perspective as he had, having seen his own world destroyed in the Time War. He was seeking a way to connect with her, by sharing the worst thing he's ever seen and making her feel a fraction of what he's feeling. He wanted not to feel so alone. By contrast, Ten (Tennant) is, in a way, trying to repair the damage his predecessor left. Rose saw the Earth turn to rubble; Ten now shows her that that isn't the end. Yes, the original Earth is gone, but time and life and humanity, and even the Earth, keep on, not gone, not dead. In a way, this trip is his way of saying sorry for making her feel a bit of the loneliness he felt, for being the only human in her time period to have seen the Earth end. It definitely feels like his way of saying that he wants to do better, to share joy and hope with her this time around. As for Cassandra's ending, again I think that was Ten's way of repairing what happened the last time. When Cassandra was drying up and pleading for moisture, Rose asked Nine to help her, but he told her that everything dies, and watched as her flesh ruptured and burst. Yes, Cassandra dies again here, but Ten is able to give her a more gentle passing this time around, and I think that was done as much for Rose's sake as for any other reason. I think the Doctor could see that Cassandra was starting to gain a different perspective and sense of empathy for someone outside herself at the end, after she went into one of the test subject's mind. Cassandra had been operated on so many times that she had eventually lost the ability to physically interact with people, but she still had her memories of being a 3D human (as it were). But when she realized that these diseased humans had lived in that tactileless existence all their lives, I think it made her realize just how important touch is when it comes to connecting with others, and feeling alive, and that, with all her procedures, she had willfully placed herself into a similar existence. And once she accepted that immortality was not worth the price of tactile isolation, that she really did need to let go of life, there wasn't a need to punish her further. Her trampoline existence was, in hindsight, punishment and torture enough. The line, and the way Billie Piper delivers it, "All their lives, and they've never been touched" really speaks to me. It makes me think of the loneliness epidemic that is going on right now, how many people feel isolated from the world, society, and each other. It makes me feel grateful for the connections I have in the physical world, and makes sure that I make time and room for them, because we sometimes take it for granted, how important connections with other people are for our well-being.

A fun story, but not a strong enough one for me to kick start the new season. The next episode would have been a much stronger story to start the season off, IMO. There are some great episodes in this season, though overall it has for me a few more ‘average’ type stories than season 1 had, but season 3 is overall better than season 2 and season 4 is better than season 3 (IMO) Can’t wait to see more Who reactions from the two of you.

Would you guys be up for watching certain classic Who stories on your channel? Granted, the pace and special effects of classic Who is slower and poorer compared to the Who you are watching now, but the story telling itself was always what the show was about, and why fans around the world watched it. There are some superb stories from the first 7 Doctors which IMO are as good as, if not better, than what you’ve currently seen in NuWho so far. Also, picking the right classic stories might give you a better understanding of how some of them fit into NuWho. Just an idea you might like to think about.

@@binrotheheretic8174that’s exactly what I meant. Thanks. Two stories for each Doctor that don’t spoil things out of context (i.e. no companions leaving but also trying to avoid giving anything away with story title spoilers.) I would go with The Aztecs, The Time Meddler, Tomb, Web of Fear, The Daemons, Omega story, Genesis, The Deadly Assassin, The Visitation, Mawdryn Undead, Vengeance on Varos, Revelation, Remembrance and The Curse of Fenric. Some historicals there, old enemies returning in human and monster form in NuWho, Time Lord mythology, alien impact on UK history, time travel meeting of a beloved major character, social satire (for the time it was made but still relevant today with SM) and the Doctor being a strategist and playmaker. OK, one episode is animated, but as a story it is an important one, and with the exception of one colour story being 5 episodes and two being 6 episodes, the rest are four episodes each (considered the optimum right length for a Who story), and every time you guys could show two episodes each reaction (roughly the length of one NuWho episode), which will help to get through these stories quicker.

It's an "ok" episode it's not one of my favourites the whole body swap with Cassandra from Rose to The Doctor to Rose to The Doctor to Rose was funny the first few minutes but then it started to get alittle silly and redundant very quickly. This episode ending actually made me cry, honestly. It made me realize that maybe Cassandra was just like those sick people when she was younger. Not even her own parents cared about her. So to finally hear someone, even if it was herself, call her beautiful, was the most heartwarming and heartwrenching thing I ever saw. Also, slight criticism. Tennant can seem highly overrated at times, but that's usually if writers give stupid limitations to what he can and can't do. For a clear example, in this episode, and another series called Good Omens, he can CLEARLY pull it off as a woman. Once you get there, (will take a LONG WHILE) just a forewarning. I just wish Davies knew how much the Trans community, the community he blamed for changing something, actually wanted that from Tennants performance.

Also, a high recommendation. Watch "Doctor Who Series One, but it's Poorly Animated" It's made by KaneUnable and I couldn't stop laughing.
Получилось у Миланы?😂
