Part of the reason why nanofibers are chosen for attack is that if by any chance the hard drive is damaged by the extremely-thin nanofiber, a clean smooth cut will most likely guarantee that the data is salvageable rather than when damged by explosives or other means.

thats true, devices exist that can still salvage data even when hard drives have experienced severe damage like being crushed or exposed to fire. A nanofiber would cause very minimal damage to the hard drive.

@voiceover2191 4 ай бұрын
It makes no sense, if it slices your hard drive in half or thereabouts, you can forget about recovering anything off of it. What you are going to do, use super glue and think it will work again after that? The only right approach would have been to send a small team of special forces during the night, they are trained to go unnoticed. Everybody on board is civilians, so should be no problem. Why would it be a blood bath? Nonsense, they do not even have weapons, if they would be alerted which is doubtful. Other argument, special forces assault would probably alert Evans and allow him to destroy the drive? Nonsense. As we can see, it takes time for the nanowire to reach him, plenty of time to get the drive and destroy it. The only thing that saves it, is that it is so precious to him, he cannot bring himself to destroy it. Which is the exact same situation of when a team of special forces would have climbed on board with one huge difference: almost everybody on the ship would have remained alive. Looks cool though,

@@voiceover2191 another factor that I didn't think about was that hard drive was alien tech also, it contained 100 petabytes. sure its easy for the FBI to pull data off a damaged hard drive, but that is human technology. Their hard drive was way more advanced than anything we've ever seen. If they damage that, would they even have the tech to put it back together again?

I like that a lot of this stuff is actually "theoretically" possible seeing as how it IS pretty easy scientifically speaking to propel a proton at light speed. If you could unfold it into a greater object you could weld circuitry to - a chip the size of a planet and somehow quantum entangle them - it would be possible. Theoretically of course. Hard science fiction like this is really mind blowing because even if you've only understood these concepts vaguely, they make sense.
@willwilliamson9580
@willwilliamson9580 3 ай бұрын
@@DekkarJr the whole thing is based on string theory which has been largely discredited and abandoned. we might be able to accelerate a proton with an outside power source to near the speed of light but not only did they accelerate it to get here it constantly has to accelerate and decelerate at relativistic speeds to do what it does here which is just not possible. as for your comment about 'printing circuitry' whatever this process would entail is so far out of the bounds of understanding that calling it 'printing circuitry' makes the term lose all meaning. its a fun sci fi idea but its not even partially grounded in reality.

The scary thing about the Judgment Day sequence is we are not that far away from developing that kind of technology in real life. And yes, we absolutely will use it that way. It has all kinds of peaceful and beneficial uses. But it absolutely will be weaponized, too. Sci fi has had nanofiber gerotting assassin tools since the late 70's. The best use for this technology, though, would be to build what is called a space elevator. You take thousands of these nanofibers, and you wrap them around each other to form a large rope 10's of thousands of kilometers long. 1 end gets anchored on the earths surface, and the other end has an anchor that is at geosynchronous orbit height. The earths own rotation keeps the other end up in space, so you don't need any rockets to keep it up there. And then you attach what are essentially cable cars to the rope and use a motor to have them climb up and down to elevator and deliver and retrieve payloads to and from space without having to burn huge quantities of fuel. These could move payloads many times larger than our biggest rockets could. If we don't develop space elevators, our space program is doomed as the fuel costs eventually spiral out of control. The ability to use this tech to build space elevators is probably why the San-Ti wanted Auggie to stop her research.

I 100% agree with you that the show's visual depiction of how the Sophons were created is top tier. But it still can't come close to how mind-blowing it is in the books simply because of the fact that it's something that takes place in higher and higher dimensions, and because we humans can't see past 3 dimensions, any depiction of it visually falls short of how the book meticulously implants the idea into your imagination. Similarly the 30 million soldier computer from earlier was the first time the book got me absolutely riveted and expanded my mind a bit to grasp the later Sophon sequence. Folks aren't lying when they talk about how amazing the book is!
@DekkarJr
@DekkarJr 3 ай бұрын
I think its cool cus it works theoretically. IDK that they needed higher dimensions to explain how they got the Sophons there or to unfold them from a single proton to a mass the size of a planet but either application of the theory will do for the plot device. I feel like a species that could do this tho would've developed a way to control their suns tho tbh. thats just the scientist in me tho.

In This show they can affect every elecrtronic device on the planet. Why not just unplug all electronics forever and send us back to the stone age? Why not just reprogram every nuke and obliterate humanity in a thermonuclear exchange? 400 years is plenty of time for radiation from nuclear winter to fall off. Why did the Sophons only learn that human beings can lie MONTHS later when they were read a children's story, and not during any time they had access to every electronic device on the planet? She was still mostly going off her own assumptions about their intentions with less than a handful of messages spread out over years... in her mind, they HAD to be morally upstanding because they were so advanced. Then she gets transcripts of their real time communication from the hard drive and to top it all off... she got called a Bug by them. I mean, I hate what she did, but I get it and ...fuck. Fuuuuuck.

I have used the example of the stirrup so many times when explaining to anyone who will listen, just how quickly our world can change with the smallest, seemingly insignificant piece of technology. Whether it be the stirrup, or the oxen-pulled plough (yes, that setup specifically), or the transistor, each provides new opportunity for one group of people to dominate the will of another. The stirrup, little thought of today, was once as powerful as the modern ICBM in how it’s impacted modern warfare, economics, geopolitics, etc., etc.. The right tool, at the right time can cause radical change. I find the field of Science & Society endlessly fascinating for this reason. Knowing these things about our history ought to inform our leaders (gov or industry) about the dangers of blindly adopting new technology out of a desire for power (money/wealth). But, we don’t live in that world. All we can do is look back with hindsight and wish we’d done things differently, with informed insight. I can see why Ye Wenjie pushed that button, but she could only see the flaw in its logic with the benefit of hindsight.

Book reader here, I thought they did an amazing job with setting up everything for not just Book 1, but the rest of the books. Episode 1 in London was a bit slow and lifeless as they were setting up all the pieces and I felt it dragging, but the production and the actors started to gel for me from episode 2 onward. Kudos to the actors and everyone who worked on the production. They made a lot of what I think are smart decisions in the adaptation for the television medium. The Sophons are an excellent introduction to what is called Clarke Tech. Clarke Tech is defined as "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic." This concept was pioneered by Arthur C. Clarke, hence the name Clarke Tech.
@DekkarJr
@DekkarJr 3 ай бұрын
It may not be distinguishable but it is explainable. Like the 'hallucinations' are obviously not hallucinations. They are the Sophons physically being there and manipulating physics. And of course the thing that spread over earth would appear to everyone watching to be a hallucination or a trick of some kind. But the fact it was a perfect reflection imo immediately disproves that to the reader it's of course the unfolded Sophon. No wonder it's so powerful, it's a computer chip the circumference of a planet. Fascinating the natural misdirection built into the writing there. Because until it is explained most readers would think all of it was a hallucination when it was the actual Sophon there in the room with them. The scene where it flies through the building and hits the back of the chicks head is another example of that. If it could cause that feeling from a distance, then why show it's perspective of flying through there? Really cool writing once you unpack it. Cixin Liu is a real genius. My only issue with his writing for this trilogy is that it's extremely pessimistic for the most part LOL. It's not like most of science fiction - it's more realistic and consequential and thus more immersive imo.
@spamfilter32
@spamfilter32 3 ай бұрын
@DekkarJr don't spoil anything in the book, but yes, I assumed the reflection. Was caused by a Sophon unfolding and wrapping around the earth and making its inner surface mirror like. I also believe, as they depicted it in the shows that the winking sky was essentially the same thing, a Sophone unfolded and wrapped around the earth and displayed a picture of the night sky and made that blink. I think this is supported by the fact that many of the stars had their light rayed out in a cross pattern. This only happens in telescope images of the night sky and is not seen when viewing the stars with the naked eye. My biggest issue with the Sophons is heat dissipation. How could they possibly dissipate the enormous amounts of heat a computer that size would generate. And how did they meet the power requirements of such an enormous computer. If this is explained in the book, do not reply with the answer.

I love how you are reacting to the series. I didn't know the channel and I subscribed thanks to these videos. Do not get carried away by some toxic opinions that are being expressed in forums or social networks. Unfortunately we live in a time in which many people are unable to find a moment of personal rest and forget their problems, many are tied to their frustrations and let out their anger against the world by writing comments that contribute nothing. I read the books many years ago, but for research reasons I have all their content fresh and I was waiting for the Netflix project with the same desire that I waited for the Tencent one. Both adaptations are wonderful. Tencent's is more faithful to the content of the book, but that does not make it superior. The work and decisions D&D have made, in my humble opinion, are outstanding. They have achieved a dynamism that allows the review of the entire season without any problem. On the contrary, the depth of the Chinese adaptation makes the viewer more lazy to re-experience all the chapters. Honestly, and making it clear that I would have liked to see this first season set in China like in the books, what Netflix has done is a 10. Even what they develop in the last three episodes is cause for applause. Many people say that the end of the season is an anticlimax, but they do not understand that this decision allows future seasons (and the series as a whole) to be much better than if the artistic licenses that have been taken had not been allowed. Fun fact: The E in the word "ProblEm" in the title of the Netflix series is the number 3 written in Chinese 三, from 三体 (Three bodies), it's not just a cool E. D&D have taken care of even the smallest detail. There are many more things to highlight but I don't want to mention spoilers.

In the books, the proton unfolding is WAY more epic. The San Ti encounter life inside the proton and that life almost destroys them. The implications are massive, for a civilization that far away from us to be surprised by what the universe is actually like is just scary. Imagine God being scared of the unknown. Trust me this is literally just the prologue, if we get more seasons people’s minds are going to be blown. D&D are doing an amazing job on the level of GoT season 1-4, there’s a lot of new scenes and they make the story better which is very rare in adaptations now days.

It was fairly quick. Even the guy that got cut in half only seemed to have time to wonder "wtf?" There are a lot worse ways to die. The worst part of this death is the mass panic and terror you'd feel A. seeing it happen and coming at you slicing people so finely its not as if they got sliced its almost as if they just fell apart - so the assumption imo in the person trying to survive that situation is "this is some kind of alien technology" . Any prolonged death is bad so I would rather have this than even like a lifetime in prison or something lol

Hearing about how they incorporated Quantum Entanglement into the plot made me obsessed with this story. I'm pretty sure it was just a few months ago before Quantum Entanglement was even proven to be real with proof that it works and exists, when this story was written that was merely a theory. All the news articles kept saying how this is a huge leap in humanity if we manage to figure out how to apply it. It's instantaneous information, no energy and no time is required for information to be relayed between two entangled particles. I know it was significant, but the applications were hazy to me. I kept thinking it over, but my brain isn't smart enough for it. Then the author incorporated higher dimensions, and the folds to make a proton big enough for a quantum supercomputer to be created, entangled the particles and sent one over and left one on their end. With time being relative, it takes almost next to no time before the particle reaches earth. Just like how light has no mass and therefore light does not experience time, it only exists. I'm obsessed with the story and bought the whole trilogy last week, it'll get here in two weeks. I'm trying not to ruin my experience with spoilers.

I love the concept of dimensions here and how they use it. This reminds me of thar hypercube. Basically all possible dimensions exist uniformly but in order for you to tap in or experience, lets say the 4th or 5th, you must "peel off a layer" of dimension kinda like an onion, or rather I should say, unfold as they stated. This wpuld allow you to witness or experience a higher dimensional plane of an object which was always there but was hidden from you since you experience and live withing the limitations of 3 dimensions. Think of a dot, it is one dimension. But u can "unfold" this dot and manifest its 2 dimensional constituent, which would be a straight line. Now, this 2d plane can interact with other 2d planes, creating a square or perhaps a triangle. Lets go back to the dot, it 3d constituent can be a sphere. But now it is vastly more complex due to the exponential symmetry. We have unfolded its 3d version. To unfold its 4d or higher dimension, we must step out of our ownselves and the boundaries of time. While 3d relies on the foundation of 2d and 2d on 1d. The 4th dimension does not rely on the 3rd dimension, or to put it in better terms, it is not contigent on the realization of 3 dimensions. That "inbetween" gap of procession is the key in unlocking higher dimensions
@voiceover2191

"The 4th dimension does not rely on the 3rd dimension, or to put it in better terms, it is not contigent on the realization of 3 dimensions." Why isn't it contingent on realization of 3 dimensions? How do you know? What is the 4th dimension and how do you know it exists? As far as I know nobody has proven a 4th dimension exists, just theoretical concepts and even of those there are different theories, like different descriptions between Euclidians, Einsteinians and String Theorists. " That "inbetween" gap" What does "that" refer to? What do you mean with "inbetween"? Between what? And why is that the key to unlocking higher dimensions? I don't want to be annoying, just trying to understand your statements.

I love this show but in the books the creation of the sophon was a lottttt more epic. It was really vivid, they kept messing up and unfolding it in the wrong dimensions which had funny effects, before they finally got it to unfold in 2 dimensions so they could write on it/program it. That’s the main thing I wish they had included in this show, I loved seeing the trial and error before finally creating the sophon.
