Like bass guitars, synth bass can be a key component in music. They give the music movement & a sense of root/chord structure. Figuring out the frequencies with this instrument can be a challenge, especially when getting the bass to agree with other instruments.
In this video, we discuss a detailed analysis of the fundamental frequencies of a synth bass. We will talk about & demonstrate what specific boosted frequencies will help a synth bass have that extra bump without resonance frequencies building up. We discuss the high-mid frequencies that can help a synth bass cut through on most speakers. We also take a look at different frequencies that should be cut to avoid muddiness & overcrowding throughout your mix.

A synth already has a LPF, but it's before the envelope so that the filter doesn't smear the transients. Removing sub-bass rumble that you can't hear because your speakers can't reproduce those freqs is different than removing high frequencies that you can't hear because they simply aren't there. The former is a good idea, the latter is pointless. A synth will generally produce a really even rolloff on the harmonics. It's not like an electric bass -- it won't have resonance buildup issues that you need to surgically cut narrow -1.5db bands from. You're just introducing subtle phase shift and unevenness.

yo, I'm learning so much watching your tutorials. Thanks a lot! I'm really new to mixing/mastering and I really like the EQ fundamentals tutorials for different instruments. So so helpful. Something really cool would be something similar to the EQ fundamentals, but for compression. Like general tips and case studies for when/how different instruments are compressed. I've been finding nailing compression that sounds good has been pretty tricky. Like, I understand each parameter pretty well, but using it well is another story.

Actually, if your bass has diffirent notes, each of those frequency points/cuts will be completely diffirent, you may even be taking energy out of the rest of the bassline...i heard surferEQ can track fundamental frequencies, eliminating alot of work. And of course theres automation by hand. Havnt done this in awhile, please exuse my vocab/explanation

You can get a really similar Reese bass sound with pretty much any synth. Use a couple detuned saw waves, maybe some unison as well, smack a chorus on there, bring the cutoff filter down to make it sound dark. Voila, there’s your sound!

That's exactly 8t. He's cutting frequencies that don't change much to make space for other instruments
