Thank you. I really appreciate your video here. I few weeks ago I did not know what Berlin School was. Now I do I just love it. I was a serious classical musician so I have missed a lot and kicking myself. I have two ARP 2600s and I am learning all about patching. It is so exciting. I love this genre of music so please can I ask you to do more Berlin school stuff. You will be much appreciated by many. Now its time for me to get that El Capistan tape echo!!!!! Thanks again.

It’s an excellent sound Berlin school I love it. You have cut through the BS and gone straight to the sound that we all love. I believe you know a lot more and that you have a lot to share I’d like to hear more about what you can do and what you know. A very comprehensive tutorial. Since the mid 1970s I was addicted by the sound (now known as "Berlin School"). Klaus Schulze and his fabulous album "Mirage" was "my hero". As for me to find the suitable delay is one of the main features. Thank you.

This was helpful. Sequences like this are only simple when the how-to is broken down in this way. A tip for others, now that I've nailed it is - keep a note of the delay times that produce a dotted 8th at different BPMs, while you're learning. I think there are probably all kinds of online calculators to help with this. I'm using a Mooer Ocean Machine effecting a Roland MC-101 and UNO Synth and religiously storing patches on it when they work. Thanks to your help I'm on my way down the Berlin School rabbit hole 👍🏻

@@synthseeker thanks for sharing, also thanks for this and all your videos. i have owned my B2600 for one week now and am slowly but surely falling into a Berlin School rabbit hole... i have an NTS-1 i use for effects (keystep for sequence) and have been going a little crazy messing with delay times so i'm sure the linked resource will be a help! 🙂

I have heard a few mention about this dotted 8th note and it confuses me what people are trying to put forward. I know an 8th note as a minim which is two beats. With a dot it is three beats. Am I on the right track so far? So now we have a bar ( measure) which lasts 3 beats. What happens next with the tape echo? Please?

@petercane6376 there is some confusion there I think. When I say eighth note, I mean a quaver. so there are eight quavers in a bar when you are in 4/4 meter. So if you play in arpeggio of quavers on your synth - let’s say you sequence an eight note pattern - then you apply a delay effect to it with a time of one and a half quavers, you will get a sort of a classic Berlin school texture from that. If you search my videos for one with the title “berlin school time lord”, you will find a video that talks in great detail about different time sigs and patterns and may help you understand that or provide better examples. :)

Thanks for the quick answer. I was referring to the tuner in the effects and instrument panel, I did find it, but also realise you are probably using 'suite' as the panoramic echo is not in 'standard' nor can I find the chorus. I am trying to get the same set-up as you to start off and then explore, but I have so many things to get a grip on ..., I use a beatstep and minilab mkII and try to get the CGC sequence (on BS) to follow keyed in notes (MkII) but not yet successful... Keep on trying. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. And exploring is joyful and learning ;-))

I am using a beta of Live Suite 11, but there are very good delay and chorus devices in Live 10 standard and earlier. I don't know for sure, I never really believed in the idea that some genres are tempo specific...but a lot of other people do. I usually write my music anywhere from 70 to 140 bpm... (crazy and not helpful I know.)

Fair point, but recreating the music precisely wasn't a goal, and I never said that. I'm demonstrating just one way to get something that sounds like "Berlin School", there are other ways and this video is a place to start exploring for people who want to try. Thanks for the links to other excellent examples. :) Happy to discuss it!
