Welcome to the second video in our series about Canine Chiari-like malformation and syringomyelia. Syringomyelia is a condition where fluid-filled spaces, called syringes or syrinx, form in the spinal cord. This happens because the movement of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) gets blocked.
The blockage can occur anywhere along the spinal canal, like when there's a web due to severe spinal cord trauma with bleeding. However, syringomyelia is most common when there's an obstruction at the craniocervical junction or the big hole in the back of the skull, known as the foramen magnum.
In this video, we'll explore the main theory about how the syrinx forms and its connection to changes in skull shape. To understand syringomyelia better, it's important to know how CSF flows, so we'll discuss that too.
And if you're curious about the research, I'll share some exciting computer modelling we've been doing at the University of Surrey to gain more insights into this mysterious problem.
