The lead singer is Serj Tankian has a 5 octave range and is an accomplished pianist. Their music is political and very thought provoking. Toxicity, Aerials ,Hypnotize are all amazing songs that show their range.

The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line ‘Angels deserve to die.’-Daron Malakian *song was written by Serj Tankian and Daron

Back when I was Christian, I saw it as kind of a dark-ish take on the Christian outlook. "I cry when angels deserve to die", Satan was purported to be an angel before falling from grace, so mourning a damning mistake. And self righteous suicide would be Jesus knowingly getting himself killed but being self righteous in martyrdom.

This song was originally going to be called “Self-Righteous Suicide,” and the record company rebelled. I remember wanting to go to the mat and keep the title, and the band decided, “Let’s call it ‘Chop Suey!’” which I thought was kind of funny.Rick Rubin (producer of the album)

The drummer John Dolmayan is my favorite drummer ever!! We named ouwer doughter afther him (Mayan, also the god of the Maya's) Fill you made my day🖐🏽 .. this band is AMAZING! It is my number one band ever and ever i saw them many times live... Insane! They have 5 albums .. all mad good, there is not a bad song you will find .. I never dreamed you would do S.O.A.D, young man! I love them but have to take them in small doses... listen to one song... go off do two or three of someone else.. then come back & do another on of S.O.A.D. As one of members of this group said : "This song called "Chop Suey", because that's what we are as a band, as musicians"(vegetables, pasta, sauce, etc.(we are different and unique)). And what about meaning of the song - its not that hard to understand. You almost got it at all. The song is about how differently we are treated depending on how we leave life. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I was going to die of an overdose, they might say I deserved it because I was abusing dangerous drugs. Hence the line "I cry when angels deserve to die". Excerpts Of " Father! Into Your hands I give my spirit" and "Why have You forsaken me?» they are references to the death of Jesus on the cross, since, according to the Gospels, this was one of the seven sayings of Jesus before his death. If you want more, i sent you their best tracks. All of them THAT deep, that you can not just listen to the song. You get something to think like an aftertaste.

System of a Down was my go to band throughout my high school days.. now that I'm in my 30's I can't go a few days without putting on some Twenty One Pilots. You wouldn't believe how happy it made me to see you react to them.. I hope you get around to B.Y.O.B (Bring your own bombs) by SOAD soon.

If we analyze the Title "Chop suey" if we know the dish itself, it is a mixture of vegetables, meat, seafood especially squid and shrimp and species, and sometimes fishball is put in there and cornstarch as stew thickener. The song's transition in melodies and the lyrics are all mixed up.

Great reaction! The four of them are or have armenian roots. One truly original, unique, one of a kind talented band. One of the very best of the last decades in the genre. Sad that because of internal disputes it´s been more than a decade since the last album. I can´t believe you never heard this specific song, it´s a world wide hit and considered in a lot of lists as one of the best tracks in metal music in the last 30 years.The lyrics are often quite ambiguous so I it´s hard do decypher them completely. Please react to their perfect gem "Aerials", another world wide hit, an amazing piece of music, with deep lyrics and beautifully crafted instrumentals. You won´t regret it.

The band is actually ( especially the lead singer) very religious. You’re right, ( Self-Righteous suicide) is Christ handing himself over to be crucified. Then the last words of Christ on the Cross... ( Father, Into your hands I commend my Spirit...Why have you Forsaken me?) and there’s an old saying that when someone commits suicide an angel dies. ( Thus, I cry when angels deserve to die).

Fill this song is so deep .. There is so much in IT! If you go 2 ginius for the lyrics you can't push the grey lines and there they explain IT all!! But this as well as many greats go right after biblical script because alot were in the apostate church experience where they saw hypocrisy and sin abound within the Self righteous crowd.. There's a certain amount of absurdity in SOAD'S lyrics that often disguises real meaning. Sometimes it's just absurd. I can't always tell which is which tbh. But here I think you're on the right track.

No!!!! 100% wrong! Some of SoAd's lyrics are just fantasy pizza pie!…but almost all of them have precise meanings. For example this song. it's clear that this song is about a person who wants to commit suicide. He wakes up in shock and covers his wounds with makeup, then leaves the keys on the table because he will not return home. But suicide is a sin and no one trusts his choice to commit suicide but eventually SOAd believe that suicide can be selfrigtous! The second part is a kind of protest against Heavenly Father, God, who has determined this bitter fate for them and also has forsaken that those who commit suicide will never be forgiven and their souls do not rest in peace in the hands of heavenly Father. the third part is just an expression of sympathy. I cry when the angels deserve to die. That is, they are innocent like angels or it refers to a folklore belief: An angel dies when someone commits suicide! Is this really complicated, meaningless or absurd ???

The song imo about armenian genocide 1915 with religious notes. The band members are armenian and they often talking about how the whole world closed their eyes to the fact that mote than 1.5 million Armenians were killed by the Ottoman Empire. They were tortured, bullied, raped, fed animals, conducted experimented, and the whole world turned a blind eye to this. And to this day, many countries have not recognized the Armenian genocide, for example, the USA and UK, because the political is not profitable for them to oppose Turkey. Germany has long apologized for the Holocaust, and Turkey has been left with dirty hands and blameless for more than 100 years, this song is about it I think

"I cry when angels deserve to die" is referring to FALLEN angels. When one hears "angels" they think of goodness. So what kind of angels deserve to die? Evil ones of course. And what's an evil angel? A fallen one; a devil. So it's essentially saying "I cry because I deserve to die since I'm a piece of shit demon who self righteously committed suicide." Essentially echoing how many Christians view ppl who commit suicide with contempt, instead of compassion. The reference to "Father into your hands I commend my spirit. Why have you forsaken me" are the last words of Jesus before he died, and is indirectly stating that, in a way, Jesus' death was a "self righteous" suicide by cop. So if people aren't going to judge Jesus, why are they judging ordinary ppl who commit suicide?

To me, self righteous suicide is thinking we deserve to go to heaven because we maybe did better than others. The father father and commend my spirit is aligning to what Jesus said but in this case surprise by a sinner that he couldn’t earn his way into heaven.. the way to heaven is not by ourselves but by accepting Jesus who already died for our sins .. easy peasy

No it's one person talking to another about their self righteous suicide and that they put on make up to hide the change ups and that why did they leave the keys on the table as if they ever needed them for what they were going to do and that it was a fable to do so. That they didn't trust in Jesus's death so they didn't have to die but that they did. They also took Jesus's words at the end out of order. Jesus talks about feeling abandoned by god until the end when he knows god has his soul and he commends his spirit to god's hands.

Just my take: Chop Suey (Chineses food) is fast food for the masses. I think you are right and Serj Tankian is drawing parallels between religion as being fast food for the masses; though it may not be the best thing for them.
