Just because you’re winning a game, doesn’t mean you can’t call out the game for the way it’s played. If anything, people who win the game are MOST effective at exposing it, because they have an amplified voice, and because their opinions can’t just be dismissed offhand as “sore losers.”

I don't believe this song is a contradiction (considering they are celebs themselves) because not all celebs fall into that trap, and SOAD happen to be very proactive and positive, and they're actions prove it. They try to use their stardom and clout for good to shed light on various harsh realities and socioeconomic issues. In summation, just because someone is a celebrity doesn't mean they are living that they are a "typical celebrity". Good stuff man. Keep em coming! Peace bro

Totally, they've been loud af since day one about world events and humanitarian values. They've been banned from playing in certain countries because they'll openly talk about the Armenian genocide.

I see SOAD using their stardom and clout to bring the world's ills to light and they're praised for it, while other celebs are lambasted by people and I wondered why this is so, and I think I know. The only difference I see is that there's no doubt that SOAD believes in those things, while celebs are just virtue signaling opportunists who are seizing on the zeitgeist to benefit them. We've seen movies depict Hollywood a something that tries to capitalize on the zeitgeist for financial gain, that there's a conditioned disdain and mistrust of the celebrities who speak out.

they as a band also went against scummy industry standards so they don't abuse the "lesser" band mates...Daron as the main songwriter and Serj as the frontman and biggest "star" would have made tons more money than the other two if they had "sold out" like it's usual. They would not allow magazine covers or interviews to single out one of the members and demanded to be treated as a band...until they kinda broke up, but before that they were truely loyal towards another and never towards the industry.

The band came together in Hollywood also, they have their own scars from Hollywood's ills and this is a song they use to express themselves and vent that. This is a very personal song for the band.

What stardom and celebrity are u talking about, although I love the band dearly, they are not celebs, system never made it that famous. Only a certain generation of rock fans and their parents have heard of them, they are not Kings of leon, they arr not led zeppelin, they were never red hot chillies, they never had that mass appeal

Daron Malakian's voice is amazing, and sure it's a shame they disbanded, because the harmonies with Serj Tankian's voice is one of the things that brought me into SOAD in the first place.

i can't recomend enough the song Dreaming, in my opinon is the most complex song they ever wrote (musically speaking), sadly, there isn't a full live version of this song, if you listen to it, you'll know why, if you ever consider to do an exception to the "only live performance reaction" rule...

Daron (the guitarist and one singing this one) was born IN Hollywood- but like the grimey, run down part. So more than the contradictions they face in being celebrities, it’s about the two sides of Hollywood: the shiny movie stars, and the drug addicted street people you see when you actually drive around the city

It depends on the celeb. for SOAD, I take it as real warnings and belief. Having following SOAD since Toxicity and his solo career, he believes in what he says, imo. He's been putting out music to fight politics and Hollywood way of thinking and never stopped - not just American politics, but heavy on Armenian politics as well. I also never saw Serj go 'Hollywood' really - he grew up poor (or at least not wealthy), and speaks through his music. He did get huge with SOAD, but I don't think in the 'Hollywood' way. He's also never backed down, just watch "Walls" from his solo stuff. When SOAD/Serj sing about deep stuff, this is the stuff you see Serj living out for the most part. Music is his way of fighting back I think.

Wonderful topic of discussion. Every single musician seems to have penned a version of the "fame isn't fun" mantra, and as a 'commoner' I've always found the 'human dilemma' aspect of this extremely intriguing. Like, you've spent your life devoted to a singular purpose and once you've seemingly obtained that purpose, you realize that you are still just a human, always looking for more, yet somehow not as human because you've been somewhat idolized.. in the end, I just think humans are greedy creatures.

They grew up on Hollywood. They did an interview talking about how people come to LA: form bands, attempt acting careers, etc. Succeed or fail, then go back to where they came from or stay. For SOAD, however, they are home when they are in Hollywood. Family & friends from childhood are there. So they know what they’re talking about.

Bravo! Greeting from Japan again! I’m so happy to you post reaction to Lost in Hollywood. I think this song express a naive side of rock’nroll. The man (women) who dismissed that girl(boy) gone to Hollywood blames the wily people on the couches. He (She) also blames the girl(boy) gone to Hollywood. And he (she) blames himself(herself) that the helpless man(women) couldn’t pretend the girl(boy) go to Hollywood. And he(she) abuse all the stupid people in a corner of the street. That’s the spirit of rock’n roll. Thanks.

When I hear celebrities outta the pop culture (and these days social media) criticise Hollywood and such, I try to take it serious. That's hard though, if their fame is based on vanity. For artists like SoaD who basically made their fame on criticising society, highlighting social issues, and making parodies on social situations it's the opposite - I find it hard to be critical of the message they deliver. I know for a fact that I cannot afford to buy into everything they portray, but I hold so much trust in them that I almost forget to think critically... It is what it is. I still try to keep an open mind and analyse every possible perspective that I can perceive with my mind. Have a great day, Sir! Thank you for the extensive amount of content that you provide us all with! 🙏

I don't see a contradiction here because they were born in the area and never compromised themselves in their success.

Toxicity is definitely their best album. "Attack" should be on the list

I think if a celeb was insecure, it would come off as disingenuous, like they were either trying to compliment themselves for overcoming their challenges, or trying to sway potential competition. That said, this song feels more like its told from someone trapped in Hollywood, I think of skid row, warning others not to come.
