The fact that when being choked from behind no one stands still for you to react in time, this move gives you a chance, Well done Sensei.

Really glad I found this. I've seen a few instructions where the attacker is standing still. So when I decided to spar with a friend who put me in this position, I quickly found out it wasn't going to go the way I was lead to believe it would.

I remember the first time I tried to use one of the rear-choke defenses I had learned in Kung Fu...against someone who was dragging me really hard like this...I blacked out, lol! This is a great defense, thanks Paul, LOVE the Russian stuff. I learned a lot of good techniques in the other Asian martial arts I studied, but the Russian thing just has a teaching style, and full-contact-proven element which appeals to me more, as a Westerner. It multiplied the effectiveness of the other bits and pieces I had learned in San Soo, Wudang Tai Chi, and Silat, tied it all together and super-charged it, and I've (unfortunately, really, when you think about it) had multiple occasions to test it, having been in a dangerous line of work for a few years (best thing I did for my safety was change my line of work, better than ANY martial art! ;)

I'm well familiar with Paul, connected with him on FB :) A few years back I had to deal with a stalker...started out just mildly creepy (guy followed me home from a talk I gave at our local library, even after I stopped to eat on the way home, trying to shake him), got more creepy, and ended with him, and two of his "friends" (who have since distanced themselves from him, one of them warning me when the guy went from disturbed to homicidal) taking turns coming over to my house on false pretexts, then trying to assault me. Ended badly for them :) The stalker turned out to be a pill-addicted, paranoid psychopath who became convinced that I was a "Russian DEA Agent" (???) sent to "psychologically break him down" before arresting him on drug charges. Uh...no.At the time, I had no idea the prick was a pill-pusher, I just knew he was WEIRD. He finally got so paranoid and disturbed that he announced to a friend of his (who later became an acquaintance; he came to us because he was truly worried for our family's safety after watching this nut-job smash another guy's fingers in the trunk of his car for stealing a jigsaw at a work site - seriously) that he was going to break into our house, tie me to a chair, and rape and kill all my kids in front of me. I have not been able to sleep at night properly since then, not sure if I ever will again. This all climaxed when my ex-cop neighbor across the street had to chase him off of my door step at 3 in the morning with his laser-sighted AR; thank God for well armed neighbors who sleep lightly! I haven't seen "Crazy Exxx" in years now, hope it stays that way - he'd be on my "shoot on sight" list if he trespassed on my property, to put it mildly :(

Me, too. If my kids even so much as hear this guy's name (and it's not that rare, popular with people of Scandinavian descent in the U.S.) they get VERY stressed out. I think I have gone to sleep before the sun came up only 3 times in the past few years, most of them during visits to Monasteries! The good thing, if I can call it that, is that I proved (to myself, at least) the value of the arts I've studied, most especially the Russian Martial Arts. This guy is nearly a foot taller than me and a hundred pounds heavier, and I was able to subdue him in under 3 seconds without breaking a sweat. Maybe when I've got more time I'll share that story, but I've still got some chores to do before I head to bed for a few hours...

Have you drilled this technique with the attacker not letting go after the roll? It seems like he still has you in the perfect position for the choke plus your giving him your back while on the ground. He seems to be willingly letting go of the choke allowing you to get back up. Realistically I feel the attacker wouldn't just let go allowing you to get up in such a manner.
@theatlantean39
@theatlantean39 6 жыл бұрын
As some own who wrestled all through school and done a lot of ther martial arts I can tell you that headlock on the ground is absolutley worthless and detrimental to boot. The guy on top will easily pop his head out and then it will be a bad day for guy on bottom. Also from that position the guy on top in the headlock can easily gouge eyes.
@bestdjaf7499
@bestdjaf7499 2 жыл бұрын
@@theatlantean39 Well I wouldn't let him roll in the first place. When he will try to roll, I will just go down on my ass & wrap my legs around him. Another 10-15 sec & he will be done. * Or I can just continue rolling with him. Of course I wouldn't stand in one place or go stiff on the ground. * We he said it's just a way to get out of the worst situation possible. But that neck crank, I really don't want to be in that situation. That neck twisting is really unpleasant.

You always rotate toward the side with the attackers hand. What would happen if the attacker used the same arm, but you rotated the other way? That would stress the attacker's shoulder quite differently, so anybody trying to find the answer should do so slowly until you know what the effect is.

as far as grabbing for the throw, would it be better to grab his choking elbow, right arm, with your left arm, and then also grab his lock over the knuckles with your right hand??? So your arms would cross and fill up all the space between your chest and the choke.

I mentioned before I had a man I know for many years who weighs about 250-260 pounds maybe more... lightly come behind me and put this choke hold on me his forearm against my Adams apple..he did not put pressure or try to hurt me.... but I could not figure why he would do this to an 84 year old man he had known for years as a friend..later I thought he was a little crazy.... then I wondered what I would do if he was serious...it hard to reach a man eyes in so quick a time or even find them with your hands (fingers)..i was thinking of carrying a short fixed blade knife in my belt and try sticking an attacker....? as far as strength goes my 120 pound wife is stronger than me.....any suggestions?

This is one of the more realistic non-brazilian jiu jitsu reaction vids I've watched. I was playing around with it at an open mat session, and while it work the first few times, the boys just hung on in the end. However, if the average joe randomly grabs you, I dont think he/she would be expecting the drop and roll. Therefore, I think its legit... but youd have to be ready for it
@warriorcollective
@warriorcollective 7 жыл бұрын
That is one of the things about self defence training, you are preparing essentially to pull it off as a complete surprise to the attacker. That is part of why it is much more likely to work in the appropriate context. Training with other athletes in a combat sport is a different kettle of fish. Glad you enjoyed the video so much!!

Ummmmmm... I'll have to try this out. There are a LOT of kinks in this concept, but I haven't ruled it out. This biggest struggle I have here is that the choke is never escaped. If anything the problem has escalated. Now you're being choked on the ground. But as you mentioned, that's for another lesson.

A bit dangerous for the throat as the flip is being done, especially if the guy is strong and managed somewhat of a good grip. There is a chance that the other guy wont let go of your neck, or get a hold of it again on the floor. It's still intersting, maybe it just needs some refining.

It won't. So the way i learnt it under Gracie defense system in jiujitsu was to apply judo and bend forward lifting the opponent via hip and then lowering your right or left shoulders according to the side he has the choking arm on. This makes them fall down in the classic armbar position.

Why does your partner let you go after you take him down? He even loosens his grip when he falls down, I guess to avoid causing an injury, but you know, your IRL opponent won't be that kind probably. That doesn't look like a solved situation. (Not to say that the RNC is executed poorly. Just search YT on how to do it properly, b/c there is no point in practicing against a bogus attack.)

When I was practicing Systema, they told me this is potentially a deadly technique since the attacker can get his head slammed on the ground. I think it'd be good to point this out in the video for people trying to practice this.
