this animatic tricked a whole generation into thinking Dear Evan Hansen is just a wholesome musical about some friends sending each other emails

What frustrates me theist is that this song sounds so wholesome *out of context*

You know "Dear Even Hansen" is the best anti-suicide play since anyone would be scared to think about how as an individual they could be recontextualized without their input or permission.

"all it takes is a little reinvention" very chilling knowing that evan literally reinvented everyones perception and the personality of connor

I realized that everytime "Connor" lies in the emails he glitches and it's really sad.

the first time i heard this song, i thought it was about two people who hated each other but they had to pretend to be friends and slowly became friends because of it now i know the sad truth

I love the detail where they say: 'the only man that I love is my dad' and they make faces, cuz in the book, both Connor and Evan's dad were like the worst person to them in their life (I think, I don't remember a lot about Connor's dad)

Connor and Evan: “The only man that I love is...” *annoyed face* “...my dad”

Listening to this with no context is so wholesome, but with context it is horrifying.

This is pure, absolute comedy GOLD. The cold open misspelling sincerely. The text writing the lyrics in the background. Evan cutting off Jared by slamming the laptop shut with his broken arm. The seconds of awkward silence. The photoshop adding in details and moving the characters around. Evan slapping Jared with a laptop. "LI ES" in Evan's eyes when he says he misses their talks. The stock images. Evan dipping Connor and dropping him when he says they're not gay. Every detail is absolute comedy.

A small detail that I love that I don't see anyone talk about is Evan looking kinda ashamed on one of the last "sincerely me" lines because throughout the musical he's not been sincere at all, he's been building a fake friendship with a dead person off a complete lie and this is just the icing on top of the cake, who knows if that's what szin was GOING for or maybe I'm looking too into it, but if that was what they were going for I really like it!!

The “miss your dearly” as Connor disappears back into the laptop sent chills for whatever reason. Amazing work on the animatic.

It sounds so wholesome out of context and your animatic reflects that with that viewing in mind, but the subtle flickering of Conner and how Evan and Jared act before getting into it reflects the contextual horror of it all. Especially when you get to "re-in-ven-TION!" They're reinventing Connor's memory and putting words in his mouth. There's a line in the musical that was cut from the movie where Jared says about how Connor loved trees, and then was like "oh no, wait Evan, YOU loved trees". That line just cuts through all the bullshit and I love it

Evan and Connor: Not because we're gay! Laurens and Hamilton: Yeah, we used to say the same thing.

this entire video is so amazing, evan and connor being gay… “NO NOT BECAUSE WE’RE GAY” the facial expressions… all of the jokes are just so amazing.

I probably laughed at angry glitching Connor at 1:11 way harder than I should; also, making the imaginary Connor interact with text and using laptop screen as framing device is a very nice touch

As someone who has never watched Dear Evan Hansen, I can confirm that this song sounded perfectly wholesome until I read the comments. Edit: As someone who watched Dear Evan Hansen immediately after watching this animatic, damn Edit 2: Oopsie now I'm obsessed Edit 3: 1 year later! Well. About a year. And, uh, I'm really into theatre now. I haven't thought about DEH in multiple months, but this showed back up in my recommended, and I remembered this comment! The smoking crack part 10/10 the spelling of sincerely 11/10 the way Evan slams the laptop closed . . . . . 90000/100!!!!!!!!

This changed my whole perspective on the song. With the beat it’s easy to think of it as a happy song, but in reality this is some fucked up shit that Evan feels guilty for but also wants it to be true.

3:43 the fact you can just see Evans guilt gets my every time

This was the animatic that introduced me to the play, at first I thought that the story was about two enemies forging fake emails to each other because their families were friends 😃

I know this is old but this is still my favorite animatic. A lot of them I used to see, I didnt have a clue of the story, and just thought it was a fun song. It still is, but this is the first one that had me realizing that it wasnt ACTUALLY Connor. And thats when I looked into it more and fell in love with the story and the fandom.

I listened to this song, and others from the musical, without really knowing the plot. I was so confused trying to piece things together. Like I was thinking this was some wholesome buddies and one of them died with Evan trying to keep his memory alive. But I was so confused on “If I could tell her” since I couldn’t figure out how that fit into this. I then fully learned the plot and Jesus Christ. One of the main characters, Connor, is actually in the play for like 20 minutes and then everything else is just Evan puppeting the spirit.

This has to be the most creative Sincerely, Me animatic I've ever seen! I love the emphasis on Connor being a character of Evan's invention by putting him within the laptop, brought closer and closer to life with each faked email, until the caricature of the person becomes so big and convincing he _leaps_ out of the screen and becomes, for a moment, _real._ Until, of course, he isn't, and so he returns to the digital, fabricated world where he, a digital, fabricated version was created. Plus, the way it isn't shipping fuel and actually -- as another comment has mentioned -- shows Evan expressing signs of guilt and discomfort at what he's doing to the memory of a recently-deceased schoolmate. (I saw this in my subscriptions and I almost didn't click on it because I was so, _so_ tired of Sincerely, Me animatics that were nothing but Treebros.) And not to mention the little touches and add-ons (Evan slamming the laptop closed, the words being typed across the screen, the stock images floating by) that really made it all the better. Keep up the amazing work!
