In Part 2, the final part of the T.A.B.S. series, George explains how to get a great mix in Logic Pro by using a chart to illustrate the T.A.B.S. methodology and then focuses on a general rule set on how to use effects in Logic using the T.A.B.S. workflow.

This video along with part one of the TABS workflow was super helpful for me. Even if I make individual decisions based on the project I'm working on which may deviate from this, I appreciate the clear and direct explanation and breakdown of this. Been struggling to really put all of this in a box for a few years now and you have presented this complex system from 30 thousand feet so that we can see the big picture. Thank you so much. Very helpful.

Thank you so much, that makes my day. That has always been the desire for me in starting this channel, is to help people see more clearly through the endless options that Logic offers, but in a more professional way - not the pro-sumer way Logic leads people to. I appreciate the feedback and will be posting many more videos soon. All the best!!

Some cases when you should bend these FX rules: • Gated reverb - gate should be added to A after reverb • Low-cut reverb - add EQ to A if your reverb plugin doesn't have it built-in • For some styles of music there should be a distortion on S • For delay with reverb you should send from A to A (delay A to reverb A) But in general these rules are awesome! I never used FX Return bus, but I definately should try it out.

Excellent points! Yes - the rules are meant for general purposes, but you are absolutely correct - rules can be occasionally broken (especially if you know what you're doing, which you clearly do) - Thanks for weighing in!!

ALL of your tutorials are fantastic. I like the way you get rid of the cookie-cutter stuff in these "new and improved" versions of Logic. I'm staying with Logic 7, and have no desire to "progress" to logic 10. Your tutorials make me feel more confident, because you have validated many ideas which I was already using. I've worked very intuitively up to this point, so it's nice to see it all laid out very logically. Thank you so much!

Thank you for this. I am going to work through your autoload set up. I have a friend who dod this for me on Logic Pro 7 many years ago, but he did not go as far ass you have with it. I now understand what he did. I have been muddling through with mixes all this time and have felt overwhelmed whenever I began a new project. I upgraded a few years ago to Logic Pro X and am loving the improvements. I just have to teach my ears how to do all of this again. At least I can see a logical work flow that will speed me up and get me straight to creating. Thank you George.

@@GGabrielMusic Is there a. template out there that has this setup for autoload?
@seanrichards9569

Simple and effective explanation, and certainly for people who have never worked in the analog studios of yore (or live), this is essential info. I started recording in the 80s so I guess my personal approach is built on similar philosophy, though somewhat less organized. My only comment covers just a couple of things every pro does but not covered here, though not sure how/where you'd place it into this flow exactly; parallel compression and what I'd call nested bussing. I often use parallel compression for things like drums and cymbals/room mics, I also use nested bussing to separately manage like-types of instruments, but then have a cohesive final 'stem' bus of everything, like all the drums for example. Another example; I recently dealt with a big band session that had 12 horns, so I built 3 busses for the sections, then a final buss for my Horn stem with a de-esser and Iron master buss comp on it. I'd say this next level of workflow is almost essential, and having build into template format a huge time saved. Using your methods, would you do this kind of template building at the Tracks level? Or would you find ways to creatively build your buss section to allow for this?
@GGabrielMusic
@GGabrielMusic 7 ай бұрын
Great question! Thanks for all the detail! I do parallel compression as well but what I do is use the side chain aux’s for that. Basically it’s a side chain in name only - it really is another audio bus (or Aux in this case, but in the digital world it doesn’t matter) so, in the case of parallel compression for drums, I collect my drums on the drum bus and compress and eq them on the bus level. Then I use a send on the track level and send 100% (or 0 db - or unity) of the drum track(s) to the side chain aux. On the side chain aux, I put another compressor (usually a smashed compression) and then use the fader of the side chain to pepper in that smashed compressed drum sound (usually somewhere around -30db or so) to glue the drums together. It works for bass, guitars, horns - it really helps glue the sound together. Anyway, hope this makes sense! Thanks for the dialog!!

Well, that can be tricky if you want to bring it into your timeline if you have a mastering chain on your stereo out. One way to do it is to create an AUX that is essentially a 'pre-mix' AUX, route all of your bus outputs to that, put your mastering chain on that pre-mix AUX and send the output of the pre-mix AUX to your Stereo Out. Then create a stereo audio track that is outputted directly to Stereo Out (therefore not being effected by the mastering chain of your track) and that should give you a fairly accurate A/B routing. Alternately, if you don't need to bring the reference track on to your timeline, simply import it into your session and listen to it in your Audio Bin. Hope this helps!

Ha! Well, it is a little difficult to update an old mix to this format - it can be done, it just might be time consuming depending on how many tracks you have. But once you make an AutoLoad with this format, you can import the screen setting which expedites it. I'll need to make a video on how to do that in the future. Thanks for your comment!

Nice series you have going. Great info. One thing to add…consider a mix bus for processing. This also makes it easier for dropping in a reference track (which can be played unprocessed at the stereo output). Just a thought….thx for your videos!
@GGabrielMusic
@GGabrielMusic 8 ай бұрын
Yes - that is a great tip! When I do that in my sessions, I actually use one of my Sidechain AUXs (don't be confused on the Sidechain name, its just a name - but moreover it is a free audio pathway like a bus) and the reason why I use that is because mentally, I like to have the perceived 'output' of my busses separated from the busses and up in that top screen. Nonetheless, YES - that is great solution for adding reference tracks. Thanks for your excellent input!

Do you have preplanned reverbs lengths in your template and what length delays should we aim for or avoid?
@GGabrielMusic
@GGabrielMusic 8 ай бұрын
I do have pre-planned verbs - FX 1 is my larger verb - usually for orchestral - I use Altiverb XL Sydney Opera house for that (3rd party plug), FX 2 is Logic's stereo delay which is synced to my tempo, and FX 3 & 4 are UAD 140 plate verbs (3rd party) that are shorter rooms for guitar, percussion, etc. - Thanks for your question!
@steveboris6286
@steveboris6286 8 ай бұрын
Sorry for all the questions but this video addresses things that no one else talks about. Are you suggesting that you don't use verbs on Keys or is it implied that if you did you would add an AUX Key Verb? Can't wait for other great content you may reveal.
@GGabrielMusic
@GGabrielMusic 8 ай бұрын
Don't be sorry - I am here to help! The only time I use reverb on the track level is if it is baked into the keyboard preset (like Alchemy, Omnishpere, Spire, etc.) but even then, sometimes I mute those effects and use sends to my aux's to reverberate them. Reverb's original intent is to create a room where the 'band' is playing in and the surrounding environment (the room, hall, etc.) is reflecting a dispersion of itself with the band playing in it. Some of the biggest mix mistakes is putting too many verbs of all different types into the mix - which can cause phasing, cancellation, muddiness and a whole host of undesirables. Hope this helps! Thanks for your question!

This info is gold… thank you! Quick question: do you think ATMOS will impact your TABS model?
@GGabrielMusic
@GGabrielMusic 8 ай бұрын
Incorporating ATMOS into the TABS model wouldn't be an issue - At one point my studio (and my AutoLoad) was set up for 5.1 and I still used the TABS format for that - and for ATMOS it would be the same type of thing (just more expanded) - you'd just need to set up additional audio pathways for that. Thanks for your question!

*_SECRETS REVEALED!_* I actually used Apple's Numbers and I took out all of the spreadsheet stuff and just used the graphics. I navigated through them by making new tabs in the spreadsheet. Then when recording this (using OBS) I just set up a scene that I was able to navigate through my Numbers presentation and make it look like custom graphics. LOW BUDGET GRAPHICS! 😂 But it works well! Thanks for reaching out and the positive feedback!!

@@GGabrielMusic Oh wow, learn something new everyday. I'll definitely be trying it out. One more question I forgot to ask if you will. Is there a reason or benefit to why you or we should use the autoload environment rather than the main logic gui to do the same things and then saving as custom template? If you already addressed it in a previous video I must have missed it :/ Thanks again.
@GGabrielMusic
@GGabrielMusic 7 ай бұрын
Yes - because the Environment allows you to set things up behind the scenes that you can call up later and they will be to your exact specifications. In the stock GUI, if you run out of tracks and ask Logic to make a new track, it will pull those tracks up in a generic manner and you will have to add all of those details to those new tracks. In the methodology I am putting out, you can customize things like inputs, outputs, icons, velocity info, what is shown and what is not shown per track, and much more. That kind of customization is not possible just using Logic's stock GUI. Hope this helps explain it!
