Never thought I'd watch a video topic such as this! I've been using T- cut since 1974 when my wonderful dad had a green 3500 P6 Rover. Brilliant for cleaning fibreglass as well. A good wax afterwards such as Auto Glym finishes the job. Happy new year for 2023!

Good video specky. I think t cut is underrated. When working by hand I was always told to work it in until it goes clear/oily. That way you break down the abrasives and finish it down better. The key is to use a microfibre folded into a pad which will allow you to exert enough pressure to break it down properly (I've always found it tough with microfibre pads). I've actually found it to finish down alright when used in this way but it never hurts to use a coat of SRP before the wax.

I can remember using T-cut with stockinette on my daytona yellow MK1 escort, I gave my neice 50p for helping by rubbing it off. I feel guilty now I've seen this. Thanks for the demo of the ultimate compound, I was about to add some to my stash but not now, I must admit I was worried about the finish it may leave. I love Meguiars Ultimate Polish, I find it 'polishes better than SRP and seems to clean the paint better resulting in a longer lasting shine. Keep 'em coming, I find your videos useful and interesting. Stay safe.

Very good test. I used to bust a gut using Tcut and then Simonize wax but from this I can see it's rather out of date. The clothes were saturated with torn off paint then. However a friend came round and we used original Tcut with orbital polisher and he used splashes of water all the time. This was an old 2 pack flat colour and the result was good. So I think it has it's uses. I would always modern wax after. I do belive it is unwise to use harsh cutting compounds on clear coated cars. Of course in the old days it was a badge of honour to say how many coats you had,12 coats!!

Excellent video Specky, one quick question though. When we compound and polish, does the polish need to be reapplied at each wash or does it stay?
@SpeckyMcSporran
@SpeckyMcSporran 2 жыл бұрын
Good question! Polish is generally something to improve the look of paint by removing the dead layer or damaged top layer of paint. That means there's nothing really left behind to reapply. But if you're using a product like AutoGlym Super Resin Polish then you'll get best results using it 3 - 4 times a year as it contains fillers and wax.

If you're new to polishers then the Guild Dual Action Polisher from Argos is a good place to start. Last I checked it was £50 and you only need to pick up a few pads and some polish to kick things off. Dual Action polishers are the most "beginner friendly" tool to learn with. You can buy better ones with more power and better features but the fundamentals are the same. I've got a video in the works as a beginners guide to machine polishing so keep your eyes peeled for it.

Did my car for first time with T Cut. Never used it before. Think I put to much on because it took ages to get rid of the hazing. In this hot weather I was sweating 😅. Then put some polish on. Still bit hazy. On other side of car I didn’t put much on. Came off better. Learning curve. 👍

I sprayed a guitar with Montana gloss acrylic paint - just because they have a superb colour range and the cans put the colour on pretty smooth. Then used Autotek acrylic laquer. After that I used T-cut by hand with a classic yellow with red stitch polishing cloth. 2-3 phases with the stuff and it got rid of all the slight orange peel left over from wet sanding and small scratches to a mirror finish. Despite what it says on the tin, I found the best process was to work it in quickly and buff it off quickly, but be sure to use fresh soft cloth/microfibre to polish it out each time. If you hang around it can leave boundary marks in a type of bloom/haze that you have to rework to shift. On the rear of the guitar body I had to make a repair and just repainted it without the laquer and that buffed out just as well on it's own. It was a light colour mind you so I can't vouch for dark colours.

Great comparisons here as I was just wandering what the difference would be between hand and machine applications. On a 2002 vw golf Gold in colour and never been treated, as it's an old paint would it be best to use original T-cut by hand, then Panel wipe and finish with Maguires 120 polish by machine? Thanks in advance.

If you've got an older single stage paint (no lacquer) then original T-Cut by hand will remove oxidation before you move to refining it. If you have lacquer then start with machine polishing with a fine polish to see how much cut you'll get and work up to a harder pad or heavier cut polish if you need it.

@SpeckyMcSporran
@SpeckyMcSporran 10 ай бұрын
Fair question! Hazing is the result of your compound being too aggressive and leaving behind deeper abrasions in the paint. You'd need to polish them out with finer abrasive compounds and polishes until the surface is perfectly smooth. Scholl Concepts S20 Black is a great product as it starts very aggressively but becomes finer and finer as you use it until it becomes like a finishing polish. If you don't like the sound of a diminishing abrasive then you could try Meguiars Ultimate Compound and change pads (firm to soft) as needed. Hope this helps!

im gonna be getting a da polisher soon as i already have meguires ultimate compound could i use any brand of polish after as i currently only have autoglym srp and autofinesse tripple...is that even classed as a polish ? and i really dont want to buy anymore....thanks
@SpeckyMcSporran
@SpeckyMcSporran 3 жыл бұрын
I started with the Argos £50 machine polisher and it's good to learn with. SRP and Triple are all-in-one polishes so they won't do much for damage but will definitely improve the paint.

@@SpeckyMcSporran great,so start with meguiars ultimate compound then either srp or tripple,I've currently got my eye on the das 6 da from clean and shiny for £89
@SpeckyMcSporran

Good polisher that. Yes, follow up the compounding with a polish. If they don't do enough then pick up something like Meguiars M205 or maybe Angel Wax Perfect Polish.

T-cut "Tetrosyl cutting oil" is probably one of the best brand names known in the automotive aftermarket as its been around for ever. However in todays modern market its not a good choice for those that know about detailing. Its really the go to retail product for the general public that know no better. It wouldn't be going anywhere near any motor of mine. Might as well be pouring Brasso, with grains of sand onto your paint ! 😉
@SpeckyMcSporran

Yep, all fair points. The rapid scratch remover is a decent compound as long as you're willing to refine after but there are better products out there.

Why is there no mention of Autoglym products these days?
@SpeckyMcSporran
@SpeckyMcSporran 2 жыл бұрын
They're mentioned often but there aren't many new videos due to there not being many new products from AG. They're an established brand that doesn't need much marketing, it's a household name. That being said, I've got a video featuring them soon.

I'll test the Rapid Scratch Remover again on a softer pad as this is very soft paint but I doubt it'll finish much better, good as a cheap cutting compound though.

Me too about 10 years ago! But I did use the Mettalic T Cut last summer to help my neighbour. The whole back bumper had a few scratches and paint transfer where someone reversed into her in Asda car park. I tried SRP and Megs Ultimate Compound by hand with a proper Polishing pad. Sold all my machines a few years ago. So the Mettalic T Cut worked very well. Another great video mate 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
