THIS IS A VERY POPULAR JAPANESE FOLK SONG IN THE MID 50s ERA. ALSO FEATURED IN THE FILM 'SAYONARA' BY MARLON BRANDO IN 1957

I cried in public the first time I heard this at an Obon festival. Irish with blue eyes, I think there must be a past life connection...So wonderful.

Another song my mother had on 78. When she was in the Army Nurse Corps, she lived in Osaka and Kyoto. I grew up listening to Japanese music and I love it.

Brings back memories. During the Korean conflict dad was stationed in Okinawa, upon discharge in 1952 he brought a recording of this with him, and taught us the dance.

This brings back memories for me. I learned "The Japanese Coal Miners' Dance" in 4th grade social studies in 1965 at UES (UCLA's laboratory school). We made shovels from wood and sewed hapi coats and kimonos to perform it. What an important childhood memory!

Mrs Topoloski used to come from Anchorage to our elementary school in Chugiak to teach folk dances every week. We learned a lot of different types of dances. Seems like I was in 6th grade or so and sisters in 5th and 4th grade. Amazing that we learned this at such a young age ... polkas, partner dancing, schottisches, tango, tinikling, line dances (Never on a Sunday!), square dancing, Highland Fling, etc. My sister was in an exhibition Irish Jig at Fur Rendezvous that year. Lots of good, clean, fun exercise!

Amust for Obon!- So easy & when the dancing usually begins most folks are "Tanko'd" on Sake & don't give a hoot about how you do it as long as you're happy!

I just came here after reading this bl story about lovers dying in this era. They'd be together hiding the fact while they're holding hands while their adviser plays the piano of this song. It all happened in their school. The other guy is going to college but the other one is going to stop studying and instead go to mine coals. But they died bc if an explosion. Now, decades later, they reincarnated being teachers on the same high school. And I'm bawling

Same time America was rebuilding Japan after the devastation of the 1940's. Hmmm, now what could have happened in the 1940's that caused America to bomb them... Not sure. In any event, glad our two countries are friends now (as friendly as you can get from two very different cultural backgrounds).
@fuerstmetternich59359 жыл бұрын
the Americans were worried about the high number of casualties(an estimated 250.000) they would incur in an invasion of the Japanese mainland during WW2. so they used the bombs.....

Jude Law Japan was wasting time trying to negotiate an armistice like we did with Italy in 1943. In August Russia attacked Japan while we showed we would exterminate the last child in the crib before we talked to Japanese like they were human. Japan was forced to surrender to America before the Russians swallowed them or we completed the program of genocide against the civilian population.
