When you explained it by saying it's a form of respect like southern manners (Sir & Ma'am,) I finally get it!!! This Alabama girl can understand that very well!

I’ve been learning Spanish for years - I still often accidentally use tú instead of usted. Luckily I’ve yet to meet someone who seems offended by this gaffe , though I would speculate that this is because they are appreciative of my speaking to them in Spanish and that they don’t really care if I make a “little” mistake like that.

THANK YOU for this video! It is great, and I recommend it to all of the families and staff that I work with in our local school district who want to learn how to better communicate with local Spanish-speaking families. AND yes, I have had students in Canada/US university classrooms from Mexico, Central America (El Salvador, Costa Rica) and some parts of Colombia who have taken me aside after classes and told me that I should not be using "tú" in the classroom, and that I should refer to my students as "usted"....this follows from that many regional dialects use USTED for more familiar or intimate relationships (el fenómeno del "ustedeo"). When I am teaching in Canada-US, I now present myself on the 1st day, and explain que todos nosotros nos podemos tutear en la clase, y que yo voy a usar TÚ, pero que si se siente incómoda/o con el uso de tú, se puede usar "usted". I teach advanced classes in economics and linguistics in Spanish, and so it's not a language class, but rather advanced content taught in Spanish.

In my language course, they taught me that they don't use tú often in Latin America. So you do use it, say in Mexico?
@holahmonggnoix5466
@holahmonggnoix5466 3 жыл бұрын
You’ll find it mostly used in South America and Central America. It’s always good to know that it exist in case you want to be an interpreter, educator, and translator. Mexico uses a lot of ‘tú’ and ‘usted’, but I heard they use ‘vos’ in parts of Chiapas y Oaxaca due to the neighboring country Guatemala. Me encanta la lingüística. ☺️

Unfortunately not. But they shouldn't use it anymore is very insulting unless like what she said, to address a judge I'm court.

"Usted" is a very old, archiac, harirachical, anachronistic word. Its loaded with the history of colonialism by the Spaniard Monarchy. Its comes from "vuestra merced" ( your mercy) I find it very offensive. It excludes the person being spoken to.
