I am totally in agreement! As an engineer, I think I bring home less money today versus 10 years ago - even with salary increases. Taxes are higher and I pay a lot more for my benefits. So, I do think Flukes high prices are not meant for most - there are many lower cost alternatives! A nice Brymen bench meter would be great!! I enjoy your channel - keep up the great work!!

Alternatively do like me, buy one on an action (an actual one, not ebay) from some bankruptcy. I would get either of the 2 ... But the point is why buy new when there are so many quality devices looking for a new home all the time. I got my 287 from one such auction at a measly 120 euros.

I love my Fluke 289! I repaired an amplifier this autumn and needed a multimeter that read mV. I first bought an used Fluke 179, I then bought a new Fluke 87-V, then a new Fluke 289, then another Fluke 87-V (used), then three new Fluke 101 (two of them now sold) and then I got a Fluke 73 III from my father. It's safe to say that things got a little crazy. I'm now selling everything but the 289 and the 73 III, hopefully with some profit. :)

I'm going to buy a Brymen BM869 as my next multimeter. I like the protection, resolution it offers. I have also a Siglent 5.5 digit bench multimeter which I think was / is reasonably priced. I don't need another bench multimeter that could be blown up by my stupidity. I do a lot of repairs on SMPS... Happy with my Megger AVO210!

My Fluke 289 has a fiddly interface as a bench meter. TOO many button presses to get the the features. However, as a logging meter it's terrific. I use it for solar power installation monitoring and such and it's awesome. One feature you find on Fluke meters is "one-shot" measurement hold. Great for measuring when you can't take your eyes away from the DUT (like live lethal voltage measurements". My Bryman BM869s behaves much like a Fluke 77-V or 28-II as far as accessing any of the functions. SOME functions require a prefix button to cycle to the right range or function, like Ohms, Diode, Continuity all in the same function button. That's a familiar interface and is no problem. My actual bench meter is a Mastech MS8040 20,000 count meter. Does almost everything you need for trouble shooting It's NOT a calibration reference. Why is it my bench meter? Simple, it operates off of both battery and A/C mains. If I need more accuracy, for the random test, I grab the Fluke 289 or Bryman BM869s, or other meter that excels for that particular need. Like Joe Smith and Mr. Lorton, I'm a bit of a meter collector so I share this with a 20+ meter collection as a reference. I worked in the test and measurement divisions of both Tektronix and North American Philips before joining Intel and later IBM, retiring with 46+ years in the industry.

I generally have more functions on my handheld meters than my bench meters even though most of my handhelds stay in the same area. My bench meters are primarily for accuracy, resolution, logging, and occasionally 4 wire measurements. I'm certainly not on the cutting edge of my hobby, but I'd rather have things the other way round than what the video proposes. More bench meter functionality built into a handheld form. I had looked into getting a fluke 289, but the display beyond all other issues was the killer for me. Been hoping they'd do a major overhaul or improved version. Have one of Dave's 121gw meters and though I'm not completely dissatisfied, it still needs some work. I really like my bm869s though and haven't been disappointed. My other favorite handheld is the Keysight u1273a. Have to wonder some times if there were such thing as the perfect meter (even for just my use) how many I would end up owning. I just can't see sacrificing bench space and portability to a meter that could be and originally was a handheld bit of gear.

I like Fieldpiece Clamp Meters. Been using them for 20 years and they are tough as nails. I have the opposite mindset when it comes to a bench meter. I want more accuracy than a handheld but I also prefer clamp meters to non clamp meters. I never got used to connecting a meter in series with a live AC circuit.... and not that halleffect circuits have become ubiquitous it doesn't make sense to use a DC amp meter in series either... unless you need super accurate readings.

I have an 189 Fluke for years and I always wanted to have an 289 Fluke but is way too pricy that never quite reach to afford for one of them. Then I saw the Brymen only on KZfaq videos, and that is an excellent meter for an affordable price, but it could be more irresistible if it has the trend option like the Fluke and a more visible bargraph. I think that bench multimeters now these days should have bigger displays with lots of information on them.

I'd like to see a project converting the Brymen 857 to a bench meter. It has the same Vref, most of the features and the same resolution as the 869 *Without the cost* Also, the Sigrok website has all the the protocol docs to run this econo-beast from RS-232, so serial over BT/WiFi would make this do wonders. A real gem indeed!

I’d most certainly like to see a Brymen 869 as a bench DMM, maybe upgraded to 999999 or even 1999999 counts. And 4-wire measurement. Reason being, Brymen definitely have the best price/performance ratio for the hobbyist to semipro range, are well built, relatively precise, and have "okay" protection. Also, they can at least be calibrated. Don’t take me wrong, I still also love Fluke and still have some of their equipment in my lab, most notably the 8840A and 8842A I use since the 1980s, but Fluke tend to drift into the "slightly too pricey" range. That said, I’d say Brymen should risk stepping up into the bench area, because they are the ones I’d trust being able to produce a good one at a reasonable price point. Before we all end up with thingies like the Vici VC8145. The el-cheapo chinese ones tend to lack on usability and protection, and instead offer a plethora of (sometimes unneeded, sometimes creative) functions. Brymen just put "the right options" in the 869, I think. Not too much, but just what you need, like remember last settings, dual display, min/max, CREST, dB, 50000(0) counts, and USB logging. Maybe options not often used, but IF you need them, it’s great to have them at hand. It feels a little like a portable Fluke 45 with added extras … :-) So go ahead, Brymen, surprise us and we’ll BUY!

ALSO do you still have a way to get Brymen DMM's. I think the fellows name was frank, but I'm now sure. THANKS. (YOUR REPLY) Hi John, I don't have a direct means of getting Brymen DMM's. There are a few models sold on Amazon under the "Greenlee" brand name...or have a look at Dave Jones' EEVBlog DMM, it's a Brymen. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Well thanks to this video ( Would you like to see a Fluke 287/289 or Brymen Bench Multimeter ?? ) I now have a vender I can get the Bryman 869 that I have been wanting for years. A Brymen 867/869s benchversion would be awesome. A fluke 289 bench version.... not so much. It will be on or above a price point that you can also get a siglent or rigol bench dmm that can do the same things way better. A brymen 867/869s spec (869s might be better, its 0,02% vs 0,03#) with some extra functions for a well below €400 pricepoint would be awesome. Important is that it's significantly less than the entry models from siglent/rigol. You can get a 5,5digit 0,02% bench DMM with trend/histogram and 4" color display (oled? tft?) for €360 ex VAT/Tax (from owon, XDM3051), so that is probably the price point that should be aimed at. I don't think brymen is strong enough to compete with siglent and rigol in the bench/lab department (as rigol and siglent have a wide array of products in that market) so it has to be cheaper or better than those, will it be able to compete. A uni-t 181A would also be interesting as a bench dmm. Uni-T of course already has the UT805A as a 5,5digit priced at €330 ex VAT/tax But Joe Smith showed that the Uni-T UT181A can be killed with a simple pieze grill igniter. He was soooo disappointed because you could tell he liked the meter, he really wanted to like it, but alas, not worthy🤣 As far as handmeters go the 867/869s are imho by far the best in their class (say sub €300 dmm). The 867 is a real bargan at €150 incl. VAT (€123 ex vat). Nothing comes close. The 289 is imho simply too expensive for what you get and features that it does have (for instance one touch calibration if you hook it up to a fluke calibration device) are mainly directed to business use. They usually also have the money to buy an existing fluke or keysight bench dmm. This is not that market. What you're suggesting is very much consumer oriented and that's not fluke's strong point as price/performance becomes then more and more important.

If you are looking for a good bench meter for your own bench, then a used HP (or Agilent ) 3478/3478A would be a very good choice. 5.5 digits, mire accurate than mist people need, and closed case calibration. You can probably find cpscads if them fir $100-120, or $159-200 fir those whose calibration is current. For new meters, the meter manufacturers will build it if they can make money at it. Thats what it comes down to. Fluke is oart of a larger company thar also owns Keithly and Tektronix. Fluke, if they were to make a bench meter (again), would be competing with Keithly, so probably not going to happen, Brymen would need to assess the market potential.
