Tablet Weaving: How To Read A GTT Pattern

If you've ever had trouble with reading a tablet weaving pattern off of Pinterest than this is the video for you. I'll go over how to read what is known as a GTT or Guntram's Tabletweaving Thingy Pattern and walk you through how to thread your cards and actually weave one full repeat of the pattern.

Thanks a lot for this explanation. It is a simple GTT pattern but yet you showed all the details. I have been doing very easy patterns, up to now, where all the cards move 4 times forward and then backwards. I can start beautiful chevrons now.

Such a helpful video! I wish I had seen/found you before starting... I am self taught and my first tablet weaving was a GTT with all kinds of “turning separate cards”. My pattern ended up on the underside so I flipped the cards and then the pattern was right side up. During that test, I changed my 2 outer cards to always turn forward because that blip bothered me. I am SO happy to now know more about threading vs. slant! Thank you!

You are absolutely fantastic! I have made a few simple bands, but I struggled a lot with the threading order and just kept changing things until I got the pattern. But now it makes sense! I just wish I had watched this before I wrongly threaded 24 cards yesterday... XD

I'm going to have to watch this at least several times because there are cards that are missing letters and that is confusing. Also a 'front', 'back' designation of the cards would be nice with the appropriate number of the gtt column written on the front of the card (and the letters), and this could help the viewer understand what the 'S' and 'Z' position looked like for the gtt column. Barring those items, I might be able to learn the gtt method from this video. Thanks for posting it.

BEST video I have seen; extremely thorough and detailed. I have 1 question: What is the advantage of always keeping the borders warps going forward vs. just following the pattern directly?

Wow! Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it! The reason I like my border cards to always go in 1 direction is I just think it looks neater. You can have them reverse any time you wish, but I like that unbroken line of borders that never has a reverse. It's a style OCD thing for me.

This is really helpful to me although I am reasonabley experienced. I have never been able to get GTT software to work on my PC. Fortunately the GGT default setup is how I do things. I note many GGTs on Pinterest have the salient descriptions toggled off. So I am thinking that some of the problems I have experienced may be because the pattern actually utilises "counterclockwise" tablets, etc? This also is very useful to now know. Grateful Thanks. Update - I have since tried a different PC and GGT now working. It really is a super bit of software. I am having great fun exploring the paterns on Pinterest.

Would you please consider making a video about why some cards are Z and why others are S in any given pattern? What is the function/purpose and logic of this; what does it accomplish in the finished design?

I have a lot of problems with Guntram's schemas, till i so his foto, where he sits with his blak cat in "upside down" maner. Woven and un woven sides of warp are changed. That's why some times i found my pattern on the down side of ribbon.

This is the best video explanation! The pattern that you're explaining does not have it, but many do. There is a red line through many of the patterns. What does the red line mean?

Glad this video was helpful! If you see a GTT style pattern with a red line or box around the turning sequence it usually is the pattern repeat. Once you hit the line you go back to 1 and repeat the pattern.

Yes, I made my cards. They are from inexpensive plastic file folders that I picked up for 50 cents apiece during the back to school sales. They are durable enough to withstand repeated weaves yet gentle enough that I've used them with sewing thread with no problems .

For my first time trying this tablet weaving using your guidance, how long should my yarn be?

That all depends on your loom type. If using an inkle style loom, however long it needs to be to go around the pegs plus extra for tying off. If using a warp-weighted or back strap method, however long you want your finished piece to be plus 20% more for weaving take-up. Hope this helps! Good luck!

How did you hook the warp you put on with swivels in the ring to the other end of the warp? just tit it? Trying to learn and here a whole piece of the puzzle missing. Also, PLEASE turn the card around to "fix it" slowly - - - very slowly - - - it went by so fast even rerunning a zillion times I can't quite make out what you did. Yes, BABY beginner and need details, slow motion. (I teach spinning, and cooking, and knitting, and dog training and realize baby steps never assuming anything is important). Thanks. Great video.

I'll keep your thoughts in mind for future videos. I'm not 100% sure what your question is. Is it "how is the warp attached to the swivels at the beginning or the end?" If that's the case try watching my Perfect Tension Video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/orZlftmYubHbmmw.html to see how I do the swivels. Basically, I just use a square knot on one end and a taut-line hitch on the other.

Can you do a video on a 6 hole hexagon card pattern, turning and finding the proper shed gap? There isn't much information out there.

You're right, there aren't a lot of hexagon resources out there. Probably why I've only done 1 hex band. But I believe John Mullarkey has a book or some resources on it and TWIST (tablerweaver.org) has a free resource and if you become a member, they have some articles about hex cards in their newsletter. If I ever feel more comfortable with them I'll do a video.

I just use an overhand or square knot to attach to the keyring.

Hi, I'm not sure what you mean by clips? Is this using the clips or clamps on a loom to secure the warp? If that's the case you just undo the clips and comb out the warp. I doubt I'll make a video about it as I do not like securing my warp with clips. I would much rather use weights.

Hi, the twist things are called fishing swivels and you can get them from any place that sells fishing supplies, like Walmart. But I would get them online and get the kind called "ball barring" vs "barrel" they work much better. The only place I've found ball barring swivels is online like Amazon, for a good price. The swivels I'm using in the video are Barrel. Check my other videos and you can see a comparison between the 2 types. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for the compliment! But I'm not sure about what you're asking in the first part of your ask and if I'm reading correctly the second part refers to double-faced where you turn the cards 2 turns forward and 2 turns back to get a solid color until you need to make a color change according to the pattern. Does that make sense?

@@KnowKnots Thank you, I am confused by what position the cards should be in to begin any pattern. How do you determine which threads should be up to begin the pattern? I'm having trouble visualizing. :( I'm slow, lol. Though I have been successful, so far, with common patterns like rams horns and dragon heads, but I think I was lucky on the start position.

Thank you for explaining. I understand what you are saying now. At 5:40 of the video you can see were "start" position is. D should be on top and toward the weaver and A is on top and away from the weaver. Your colors will be going in a counterclockwise direction. The pattern draft will tell you what colors go in each hole. A is the top of the draft and D is the bottom. Does that help?

That explains things. My very first tablet weave I used a pattern like this, the colors came up in the right order but everything was slanted opposite so instead of getting smooth diamonds I had spiky ones. I was so frustrated. Are these patterns always read as clockwise threading with threading direction or does the program allow people to use different schemes? Is there a way to tell if a pattern uses different definitions?

Hi! So glad this cleared things up for you! The program doesn't show the abcd unless you turn it on or explicitly state FB BUT as you saw at the beginning of the explanation there are different ways to interpret it and still get the same pattern. I showed you my way and the way the program will do things if you go into more depth with it. See my How to use GTT Program video to see what I mean.

I'm just stumbling onto card weaving and want to try some patterns. Can someone tell me what the red line means in the pattern? The ones I've found on Pinterest have the GTT pattern and some have a red line that divides up the pattern and I have no idea what that means.

The line is where the pattern repeats and starts over at the beginning.

I'm glad the video help! But I have not used a rigid heddle loom for tablet weaving. I've seen it done but I would think you would need a balanced pattern to control twist. Equal forward and backward turns.

@@monicaxaverina6890 If you can teach yourself to ignore the letters on your cards and just use the starting positions you'll be better off in the long run. Especially when reading patterns from other programs/people. The most consistent thing about tablet weaving is the inconsistent pattern schemas.

If the program is working but you can't open files then I'm not sure. Try making a pattern and saving it out and then opening it to see if that works. Other than that I can't really help. Sorry.

I'm assuming you mean the pattern? The base pattern is 12 cards. The 2 outer most cards are for your borders and give you a cleaner edge. But can be left off.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I assume you mean 5-8 picks are blank in the forward direction, that is because ALL the cards are going backwards, if you like more to the right you'll see 1-14 cards are all moving backwards.

I find it a little odd that turning the tablets so that they follow the sequence "D,C,B,A" is considered "forwards", that got me confused at first

It is odd, but that is the way the programmer coded this. I usually don't follow ABCD threading and just know that the top color will be top of hole away from me and the bottom color is top hole closest to me. If you like 'forward' to be towards you you just reverse the threading order.

You can use it to make animals and plants if your are creative. Sulawesi or twill would be your best options. I find twill easier on twistedthreads.org though. This program can do as many vertical rows as needed to complete the pattern and if you want 19 'rows' across that would be the number of tablets you need. Each tablet is 1 row of warp.
