Tablet Weaving Tutorial: Getting Untwisted with Fishing Swivels

Sometimes your tablet weaving pattern will have a card or two (or many) that are not twist neutral. This Oseberg 21 is the perfect example where 2 of the cards get very twisted while the rest have no twist accumulation. This is one method of dealing with twist in your weaving by using size 3 brass fishing barrel swivels. They are inexpensive and easy to find--I got a packet of six for $1.49 in the fishing section of my local Fred Meyer store. (A few options have been added to the Amazon storefront, if you want to order some)
THIS JUST IN! I got a comment from a viewer/reader on my blog who suggested a simple fix to the twisting problem, so an updated pattern is now available for Oseberg 21 that makes it twist-neutral! Horray!! Thanks to Amy B. for the suggestion.

* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.

* 3 1/4" cards from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards are made by Lacis but without the colored edges.

You haven't even started, and just from the description, I'm saying, "That's brilliant! That's utterly brilliant!" I currently have a piece of tablet weaving draped over my SampleIt rigid heddle. The warp ends are tied to a set of Gatorade bottles hanging off the back beam, and every few inches, I have to get up, untie them and straighten out the warps. But...FISHING SWIVELS! You're a genius!

This is just the video I needed! I just completed my first tablet-woven band today, and having to untie and chase the twist was getting tedious toward the end. I'd heard about fishing swivels, but I wasn't sure how it would work on an inkle loom before watching your demonstration here. Think I'll definitely invest in a couple packs before I start my next project.

I am pretty new to tablet weaving but have been experimenting with swivels because I hate having any floats on my borders caused by switching direction, and also as I experiment and figure things out I often am not warping up yards and yards per project which means reaching that overtwisted state way more quickly. I have found two tips that really make them work better that I figured I'd share in case it helps anyone else coming across this video. First, if the cards you're swivelling are either solid color or pairs of colors (which for those border cards is very often the case) rather than running four separate strands you can double back through the swivels (best way I've found to do this is string the swivel on the yarn and carry it with as you run the first course, then leave it with your stationary hand and run the return course backwards) -- this will mean the end that's actually doing the spinning when you untwist will have no loose tails to get caught up. Second, when you are overtwisted and ready to untwist, loosen the tension. This has the double benefit that (1) you can spread out the warp yarns on either side of the bundle you're untwisting to avoid them tangling up with neighbors and also (2) the swivel tends to work a lot better, the kind of cheap barrel swivels on the big rack at sporting goods store are prone to binding under tension, especially when they're dry (I suppose one could always try the fancy expensive ball bearing kind, but feels like overkill for the purpose).

Thank you for showing how to use the swivels with an inkle loom (obvious now I know how!) but surely you're not doing a square knot when you only have one moving end. What you need to join the end to the swivel is two half hitches and this would be much easier to do, using the moving end almost as if you are doing a buttonhole stitch, and is almost what you got but not quite. The whole point of using a square knot in weaving (or any other purpose for that matter) is that it makes a secure knot when two ends the same thickness are tied together round something like the beam on a loom, but which can be undone fairly easily by pulling the tail and body of the same end into a straight line. The other end then forms a lark's head knot around the straightened end and will slide off.

XD I was looking for fishing weights for my loom, and came across the swivels. "Of course!" I thought. What better way not to have to untie and comb out the over twist. Looks like finding this today was meant to be. Now I am certain of how to attach the swivels. Thank you.

Thank you so much for your detailed videos once again. My makeshift loom unfortunately didn't work that well so I had to patiently wait for my little Ashford loom to come in the mail. So today I started my first weave and the warping went very smoothly thanks to you. Now I am weaving and that goes really good too..... if I don't forget on which pick I am on because I keep forgetting to move my ruler LOL The thing is I have seen you cutting your weave off when you are finished...so far so good, but what to do with the ends after that? Would you show in a video some options on how to secure the weaving? And do I only weave as long as I need my project to be or can I cut it into several shorter pieces if I would like for example book marks. Thanks so much for all your hard work. Your videos are absolutely amazing!!! Sabine

Remembering to move the ruler is important! File that under "been there, done that..." As for the end of the weave, I don't do anything super fancy with it. On the last pass, I stick the shuttle into the loop I've left behind, and pull it snug. That's it. When I'm sewing it on a garment, I tuck the end under and sew around, or tuck it into a seam. While I'm waiting for it to be applied, or just setting it out for display, I just stick a pin in it. I haven't had any issue with the weaving unraveling.

You can always fringe the ends. To do that you take pairs of excess warp threads and untwist them, then twist them back up but together. They’ll form a thread with double the plies of your original warp. Otherwise if you need to neatly finish the ends I used to just run a couple lines of machine stitching across the end then trim and hand whip under

Perfect! I’d heard you mention fishing swivels before but didn’t understand how they’d work. A wonderful tale with(out) a twist at the end 😂😂 Is it possible for you to discuss threads? I’ve just had the experience of having to change weft threads half way through a piece. I’m using up odd bits of yarn while I’m learning. There was a change in the sharpness of the pattern - St Bertille.

Are you using different weights of yarn? That will change the look of the piece if you move from lightweight threads to heavier threads.

I’m new to tablet/card weaving (Literally JUST ordered my first Inkle Loom today... waiting for it to get here is torture! LOL!) So, to avoid having to untie later, should I tie fishing swivels on ALL the cards before I even start weaving? How do you know which cards will twist and which won’t?

I have a question, Elewys: I have two different sets of cards: one is labled like yours above, yet another card set that I would like to use because they are a better size are labeled A/B across the top and D/C at bottom. Does this labeling matter? Don't I just thread the thread through the appropriate letter? Or does it matter? Thanks in advance for your excellent instruction.

Just turn the cards so AD are at the top when you start. If the cards are labeled clockwise, you should be just fine!

I saw someone online trying to explain how you backward and forward twice, except when you were switching colors, and then she lost me. I'm very, very new to all this. I'm doing your Virunuka band (second project ever, boy is this slow but gorgeous!) to see if the "how it works" clicks. I'm having a blast learning all this, by the way, so thanks from a fellow Western Washingtonian!

Virunuka is a crazy hard place to start learning! Clearly, you're a brave soul! And it's taking me a long time to finish as well--I had to pull it off the loom and set it aside. I find that many of the skip hole patterns are two-sided, but so is the Cambridge piece, which has a very unique weaving technique.

Is there a way to see a pattern & know that it is not twist neutral before I start weaving? That way I can add any swivel clips as I'm setting up the loom.

When you look at the pattern, count the number of forward and backward turns in each column. If they are the same (16 forward and 16 backward), you'll know that that card is twist neutral. If it's not even (14 forward and 18 backward), you'll know that the twist will slowly build up.

This is probably obvious to most but if there is a project that you know is going to over twist is this something you could do from the very beginning while warping?

If you look at the entire pattern and count how many forwards and backwards turns for each column (card) you can single out any that have more turns one way over the other.

Depends on the wood, but if you're careful about placement while weaving, you can minimize it

Try wrapping your tails with a piece of scotch tape to keep them from catching? I've never done tablet weaving but that seemed like a good solution when I was watching.

@@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 A bit of packaging tape? Or a touch of Washable school glue during first set up? Worth a try! I was planning on building my loom but a birdie let it slip that the Easter Bunny is going to bring me one for Easter. I'll still build one when I have the proper tools.
