One method of reversing the twist in a woven piece is to work every part of the directions in reverse. Top to bottom, backward are now forwards, and forwards are now backwards. Elewys shows you how in this quick tutorial!
Pattern for this band, Birka 12, can be found at ladyelewys.carpevinumpdx.com/2...

I am not sponsored by any company, but if any of you are interested to know the materials I use:
Tablet Weaving Pattern Generator:
* jamesba.github.io/tabletweave/
Yarns:
* Maysville Carpet Warp, which can be found at several different weaving supply places (I often use WEBS at www.yarn.com). It comes in more than 70 colors on an 800 yard spool for about $9, so it can be used in a number of projects and the price is very reasonable.
* 20/2 silk from Eowyn de Weaver on Etsy. Each cone is $30 and comes in 18 different colors. There are also small 100 yard spools that run $5 each and comes in more than 2 dozen colors.
* Pearl cotton, size 8, which can be found is most craft stores in a bunch of colors.
Cards:
* 2 1/2" wide (63 mm) made on a 3D printer, a pattern designed by my husband. Free downloadable patterns of other tablets are available on Thingiverse (not my pattern--we are still working the kinks out of the design--www.thingiverse.com/thing:180...)
* 3 1/4" from Robin & Russ Handweavers (which are, unfortunately, out of business) or from Schacht Spindle Company, which run $8 for 25 cards. I love these because they are colored on the edges and they are thin but very durable. Similar cards by Lacis are available on Amazon.

This. Is. So. DAMN. USEFUL!!! I wish I had this video back during italian pandemic lockdown (march-may): I tried tablet weaving and I enjoyed it.. Except the bit where I had to untie the warp every ten flip of the cards :O it was sooo stressfull... Your videos are wonderful, clear and helpfull! Thank you for posting them!!!

Oof, how do you keep it straight in your head? Any advice for new weavers who get confused easily? E:thank you for doing these in depth videos, I was reluctant to try card weaving because it seemed so technical, but after trying it I'm really getting into it!

@@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 No, but they are made of playing cards so they start bending after a while. I found the ones you have online and they work much better.

THIS! Thank you for posting this video !!!!! I was untying and untwisting my threads…omg what a mess that was turning into! I wish I had seen this sooner. Just to clarify…I can flip all the cards and keep working my pattern the same way rather than reading it in reverse? Just want to make sure I’m getting this right! ❤️

Love your videos. I had given tablet weaving a try a couple of years ago and I quit because I didn't really understand it, but OMG I'm so glad I found you. I have a question though I've seen some people using those fishing things at the end to prevent twisting. Isn't it a good way to solve the problem?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 3 жыл бұрын
Opinions vary. The fishing swivels help some people--I tried it with this loom and it didn't work out very well. Because of all the bends around the pegs, I was spending so much time chasing the twist to the end of the warp, I found it was just easier to weave the thing in reverse and keep going.

Thank you. What you are doing is very clear. However, you made a comment about "you could flip all the cards" - which I take to mean that you would do as you have done the border cards...but the rest of your comment was unclear to me. Do you then also work the pattern 10-1 or do you continue to work 1-10? Thank you.
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the confusion--you could flip all the cards rather than reversing the backwards/forwards. Or you can leave the cards as they are and reverse the backwards/forwards directions. You still work the pattern 10-1. I hope that clarifies it for you!

This is so helpful! I’m unclear about the transition though. Do you weave 1-10, then 10-1? When I do this my pattern has a pair of eyeglasses instead of just reversing direction. When you go back again, is it 10-1 and then 1-10. That would result in 8 picks together with no split. Scratching my head :-). I love the historical information & am hoping to go through the whole series. Thx!

Some patterns you have to start from a different place, but you also have to flip all the cards before you reverse. I hope this helps!

It gets progressively harder to turn the cards and you run out of room to weave

If you flip just the border cards as described, does this show in the finished piece, for example a lump or visible change where the flips occur?
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066

The finer the threads, the less noticeable it is. There will be a slight bump with the 8/4 yarns (like I often use) but if I use 20/2 silk, it's nearly invisible.
@streyycat667
@streyycat667 Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Omega Symphonia is huge (dk) so I guess it will be quite noticeable but I don’t care because I’m too novice to mess with swivels & the belt I want to make is long. After I’m moved and can unpack again I will try a short band to see. Thanks for the quick response!

Hi elewys. I am wanting to know if you have ever had floating threads in any of your designs. I’m doing one that has very long floating threads and I don’t know what I am doing wrong. I am using the guntrams tablet weaving thingy program
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066 11 ай бұрын
Floating threads can be a problem in some patterns. The finer the threads you use, the less noticeable it will be, so if you're using an 8/4 cotton warp yarn, it will virtually disappear if you switch to a 60/2 silk. If you are doing one quarter-turn forward then one quarter-turn back, you'll end up with those long floats. If you can alter the pattern to have two quarter turns forward and two back, those floats will disappear, but you will need to have the same color thread in two holes next to each other for it to work. I hope that makes sense. :D

Some weavers use fishing swivels and chase the twist to the end of the weave. It doesn't work well on this loom, however.

Is it in every pattern that you go forwards (say, 1-10) and then backwards (10-1)? I thought I would just repeat the 1-10

Can you just untwist each card until There is no more twist and continue with the same pattern
@elewysoffinchingefeld3066

No--if you just untwist, the twist will move from one side of the card to the other.

So, what this means is that: If you twist your cards (S to Z, Z to S), then weave for example 12-1 (insetad of 1-12), AND reverse the pattern (forwards become back, back becomes forward), you will untwist the twists and still get the same pattern?
@sofiapettersson3439
