There are rules and random tables in Middle-Earth Roleplaying as well, for exploring outdoors and travelling. I'm sure AD&D and possibly BECMI had some as well.

How many points it would cost to search the hex? The party stops and searches the hex for dungeons or other interesting features. Maybe the same amount of points each terrain costs?

6 miles per hex seems a bit odd. Why not 5 miles/hex?

My thought process was 24 hours in a day, easily divisible by 6, easier to roll up to whatever you quantify a day with! Roll with whatever makes the most sense for you though, this exercise is all about ease for DMs/Judges!
