I find myself playing & buying less Games Workshop stuff. But what GW items will I not stop buying? And why?

I haven't done a hard boycott of gw, it's just that when I look for models I can usually find what I want somewhere else for cheaper. My budget is tight, and mostly playing miniature agnostic games means I can forego gw unless they put out something I really, really like.

Completely agree. Videos like this are why I love the channel: well iterated, not bombastic, no clickbait.

"The Corporation is not your friend" is a great line and one that as a consumer is forgotten. The Corporation is their to provide an organization to manage the selling and finances of the provision of a product. Their goal is to get a consumer to buy more for the companies interests.

For me, the biggest threat to GW is that their games are not accessible to new Hobbyists. Too complicated, too many rules dispatched in many expensive books. The only simple game remaining is Warcry, and I am afraid of the next release.

A very sensible and sober take. As consumers, we must beware of choosing sides and fighting the companies' battles for them. Games Workshop has enjoyed a hegemony over the hobby for nearly four decades now, but the tide is shifting. Their competitors are slowly but surely growing, and that is only a good thing for us hobbyists, because competition favors the consumer. There is no need for hobbyists to declare their allegiance, but instead they should enjoy the wealth of options at their fingertips, picking and choosing whatever games, models and supplies they find interesting, GW or otherwise. The label on the packaging doesn't actually mean anything, it's just marketing. It's the enjoyment at the table that matters.

I totally agreed with you about kill team at first, but im surprised that after a few games and a better understanding of how it all runs together I actually enjoyed the rules way more than kill team 1. that said I still do really miss the customization

You should do a video on picking minis that are fun to paint. Been doing that exclusively lately, totally changed my flow on things. Used to despise the hobby lol, now it's great.

I'm glad you did this video (actually, almost every video of yours I find useful/entertaining/enjoyable). I understand the frustrations others have (I have many of them myself)... I think that that and the fact you've been bringing up so many other companies (game-wise) is why they ask you.

Those necromunda markets were an instant buy for my Star Wars Legion tatooine board. I've probably bought 90% of the necromunda for use in other games! I'm not buying as blindly as I was a few years back.

I have to begrudgingly agree regarding the Washes. While they are expensive they still do their job. I buy my models second hand though. That being said, I have learned to love Oil Washes, yeah you work with very harsh chemicals to thin them. But the results are undeniably better than my go to Washes.

Great video. My involvement in the hobby now boils down to watching your videos. It’s how I can vicariously enjoy a hobby I literally don’t have time for. I bought Nightvault because I thought Thorns of the Briar Queen were such amazing models. It’s sitting unopened on my shelf. I think there have been two new editions of that game since. Maybe one day I’ll find time to paint them. In the meantime I’ll continue following your channel and imaging I’m a war gamer.

GW is the reason I got into the hobby back in the late 90s. Mainly, it was the lore/background, then the miniatures, then the distant promise of actually learning the rules and playing a game one day (I still haven't played a full game, 20+ years later...). I think it's a smart move on your part to keep covering GW, and I really appreciate your honest opinions about their products. I think they're going to be increasingly challenged in the miniature marketplace going forward, though, with the meteoric rise of 3D printing. People simply aren't going to be willing to part with $50 (or more) for a unit of five models, when they can 3D print some very respectable alternatives for a fraction of the cost. If GW are to survive going forward (and I really hope they do) then they need to be more responsive to fan feedback. For example, I love their regular acrylic paint line, but those pots are such an awful design that I now buy from other companies who use dropper bottles instead. And don't get me started on the constant rule changes, which make the codex or army book you just bought instantly obsolete. That stuff drives me nuts!

For the most part I have to agree (apart from the 'keeping up with GW' stuff, because I don't have a YT channel :D). Their non-standard paints/washes are nice (don't get me started how much I hate the base/layer paints system), their models, for the most part, are very cool, though honestly I think some of the character stuff overly complicated and overwrought. The pricing model is a bit annoying though, a single monopose (with limited options) plastic Commissar costs half as much as an entire multipart Mark III Space Marine squad... For the most part if I want a character model it's usually cheaper to kitbash one than it is to buy that specific model.

As much as Games Workshop May grab the attention of people, I feel like it does a lot to scare people away from the hobby too. I know a decent number of people who think that the hobby is incredibly overpriced just because of Games Workshop, so I have to reintroduce them to other companies. I'm okay with buying less and less from them because in my experience it makes the hobby more accessible

Personally, Its not just the models for me. There are tons of other companies out there making top notch models and Resin printing is now at the point where its quality is as good as GW aside from being made out of resin. However, I enjoy the background and the story of the GW models and when I am painting something from a story that I like, I imagine the model in the story and that helps me put more into my painting. Earlier this year I painted some non-GW models for someone else on commission. The models were fine. I did a good job on them and the client was happy. I hated the process. I felt like I was just going through the motions and when I was done, I didn't feel attached to the models despite spending so much time on them. Maybe it was because the models weren't mine, but maybe it was because I had no connection to the story behind the models.

Ok, so I listen to You as a podcast while I'm working. And imagine how funny it was, when I've burst into laughter in the middle of my workshop when I've heard "krakalakadingdong". Thanks, Uncle, everyone looks at me funny now!

I know this is an older video but I have recently found your channel and subscribed. I am a returning painter / hobbyist my break has been around 30 years. My last models were lead to give you an idea. I love the return to painting and really enjoy your videos. The humor & the actual help is enjoyable and helpful. I’m hooked both for the channel and the hobby. Thanks

I'm in a very similar boat. Aside from not having a KZfaq channel and actually liking a huge amount of their paints, I've definitely slowed down on buying stuff from GW, but I don't think I'll ever completely stop.

I'm in a similar position to you. I used to get lots of things from them, but i no longer even play their games. Still, i'm in for the models, so i'm still getting Necron stuff from them once in a while because i love my undead robot egyptians. But i don't feel compelled to keep choosing them, i only get some individual stuff because i like it, but it's been happening less and less.
