In this video, I explore the origins of Taekwondo, along with how you can apply the movements of the forms or poomsae. Check out this exciting guide into the history of Taekwondo!

In before all the ATA guys come in here crying that TKD is over a 1000 of years old and uniquely Korean... while totally ignoring the factual history of the art they reference as TKD's ancestor hwarng-do was actually a grappling style like jiujitsu. Not to mention all ancient statues/glaydon vase's/texts depicting hwarang-do (actual museum artifacts), show it as a grappling style only, hence it is nothing like TKD and more a long forgotten Korean jiujitsu system.

Per the official ATA website: historians believe it originated from a Korean martial arts form known as t'aekyon practiced over 1,300 years ago. Just google full ATA international History because it seems when I link to it the reply gets removed.

The first part of your comment is correct about the ATA and their nonsense, but when you then mention the name Hwa Rang Do as if it was a real martial art that actually existed that is where you go wrong. No such martial art was ever a real thing and the hwa rang do were flower boys and effeminate artsy boys who dressed like women sometimes. This is a historic fact. Subak was known as a wrestling style in ancient Korea and was most likely based on Chinese martial arts with Japanese martial arts since Korea fought both enemies and a similar history of shaolin temple martial arts making their way to Korea as they did Okinawa occurred. Korea also has a traditional wrestling style called Ssiruem. Look it up. It looks like sumo wrestling but has different rules. In the Muye Dobo Tongji the martial arts that the Korean military at the time were practicing were based off of China and Japan. Subak is mentioned as being empty hand fighting but a wrestling style. Kwan Bap is mentioned as a fist fighting method. It is similar to kung fu.

This was a condensed, factual, and insightful synopsis on the history of Taekwondo. Well presented. Especially the ranges of combat as time went on. Karate/Taekwondo has to evolved to meet the needs of the people practicing it.... all roads are worth the journey. I started in the 80's and it's been interesting to see it change over time.

Really like the long range, close range analysis. So many moves have potential as defence and offence. I'm only a TKD yellow belt, but have some experience with Wing Chun. I prefer the close range in sparring, which my TKD clubmates often find frustrating. Will check out the course!

The history is only unknown to the average taekwondo mom or kids who don't really care. The whole thousands of years is still propagated by mcdojangs worldwide, but the Kukkiwon has recently relaxed on that and has taken a more neutral stance so it's a bit of progress. But this video was kind of a juvenile take on the issue with comedy and stuff. Also Jiujitsu did have striking in it, but it did not focus on it like a kickboxer would, but they had strikes. Japan was focused more on military conquest than street fighting so weapons made more sense to focus on. Japan actually did adopt wrestling from the West as well as Boxing. If they did not like "smelly foreigners" they wouldn't have adopted all of the western things they did to become a serious world power. Funakoshi did not "cash in" on his Karate. His success simply just came about and he always was humble and was asked by the government to promote Karate to Japan. He didn't come up with the idea to do that. The emperor of Japan before he took the throne even saw a demo and was fascinated by it. Japan is the one who made the propaganda about Karate. Also, Karate was a political tool along with Kendo, Judo etc. to influence Korea with Japanese culture to try to get more Koreans to accept becoming Japanese. Original Taekwondo masters before it was turn into Taekwondo did not even attempt to hide the fact it was Japanese or a Chinese hand way via Okinawa and Japan. It was actually something they were proud of and used to give their kwans legitimacy. Only later with General Choi and his buddying up to Syngman Rhee the president of Korea who was also a corrupt politician and small dictator did the whole Taekwondo is an ancient Korean martial art thing come about. General Choi had political weight since he was a general and all. And yes Koreans eventually used it to promote Korean cultural exports around the world with Taekwondo. in Korea with a few grandmasters there is a lot of "bunkai" being promoted and self defense. Seperate Taekwondo from the WTF and focus on Kukki-Taekwondo as the martial art.

I’m sorry you didn’t like it. Obviously this is a highly abridged history couched in humor. When you make something like that you can’t go into a lot of detail on every piece of the story and some elements get simplified to fit into a narrative package. I can see how it’s not everyone’s cup of tea.

@@tkdguide No. I did write one but I am planning on writing a simple Taekwondo book about a lot of topics and one chapter is on history. 49 pages. but I pretty much agree that Taekwondo comes from Karate and the bunkai could be found by reading a shotokan book and various karate books showing stuff on bunkai. Also the one strike one kill concept is a goal people should have, but not 100% rely on it. At least one strike one incapacitated enemy oor just a few strikes. Or set it up with previous strikes first then do the power strike to finish. But sport karate is BS and while I think WTF sparring is BS as well it wasn't in the 80's and 90's.

And Japan is so petty that I wouldn’t be allowed in many hotels, restaurants, martial arts schools, theme parks etc… Also japan has a law that the police there can stop and search you for no reason and they have a 99% conviction rate. They have the right to hold you for 28 days or some stupid shit if they feel you are breaking their laws. Japan has some of the dumbest laws in the worlds and it makes me never want to step foot there.

@@tkdguide I just wanted to thank you for not even addressing the Taekkyon connection BS that General Choi and Nam Tae Hi came up with in order to sell Taekwondo to the Korean government as a "truly korean" martial art. @@WinserEspinal Nam Tae Hi followed Choi. Choi made up the Tekkyeon connection and lied about training under some secret master. Hwang Kee of Moo Duk Kwan (Tang Soo Do/ Subahk Do,) also lied and claimed he learned Taekkyeon. Or maybe he did learn something of it, but it is doubtful. Taekkyeon was a real thing though and some men did train in it when they were young. It was a sport/game that peasants did and more of a social activity than actual self defense fighting. But the spirit of the concept of Taekkyeon did in fact influence the desire for Taekwondo to be the name of a unified Korean Karate for all of the kwans.
