Graeme goes winter sea fishing with worms and fishes into the dark. The Man Fishing Alone series continues. This time GP is on the beach waiting for the tide to turn and hoping the fish start to bite. He wouldn't have problems in a survival situation as he builds an open beach fire and cooks up a large steak. He also fires up a vintage Anchor pressure lamp to light up his fishing area. He has no problem fishing on his own at night...but will he catch a few fish as well ???..Check the film to find out...

We are survivalists, turned to consumers. i think that's why not many people can be bothered getting out nowadays, life has been nerfed and too comfortable. I fish the canal a lot, most anglers just go to a fishery now, partly because they're gaurenteed a catch, but it's just too easy. Technology has made us impatient, we cannot be bothered with the grind, we just want the reward at the end. This makes appreciation for what you are doing much less also. The beer always tastes better after a hard graft, so they say.

I was handed down a Tilley lamp by my dad in the 70's and used it up until the mid 80's when the tank developed a leak, but I did not have it repaired as I had bought a Hipolito Lamp (500 candle power and no gob as it had a jet) when I was told that they were being discontinued. I would place a small meat pie on the top and sometime during the night I would decide it was hot enough to eat. I used this up until three years ago when I bought an electric lantern, not as bright, but bright enough. I love night fishing and feel sorry for the people that do not get to see our amazing sunrises and sunsets.

used to do a lot of trawling in hayling bay. was full of plaice and sole etc. In the 80s there was a sandy beach all through the bay and soft sandy/muddy bottom quite a long way offshore. Just before the big hurricane of of 1987 they replenished the beach with thousands of tons of shingle to protect the properties on the island and over the years that shingle has washed into the bay changing the bottom from the nearshore and off into the bay. a couple of years after the beach replenishment what used to be a soft bottom ideal for flatfish is now rock hard and the fishing has never been the same since.

While I don't have a pressure lamp (I had one until about 5 years ago when my brother borrowed it and never brought it back) I've still got about half a dozen old hurricane lamps I still use regularly. They used to be very common here in Oz, but everything is battery-powered now it seems. Watching you was like reliving my childhood with family night fishing trips being a common occurrence, particularly in summer. My own kids like the occasional night trip, but apparently there can be too much of a good thing. Probably my fault for that because I like to stay out all night and they prefer to go home before midnight. We usually have a folding table, camp stove and a tray of sausages and steak with sliced onions (it's against the law to cook outdoors in Oz without some onion burning lol). The kids will smear everything in tomato sauce, but I'm in heaven with some hot mustard or a blob of HP sauce. My youngest is 15 and my eldest is 25 with her own little boy for me to teach all of my bad habits to.

in 1980 my sister bought me a hipolito lamp for my 18th birthday. As well as on the beach and over a pier railing with a rope as a fish and squid attractor it has lit the front room from outside the window during a power cut several times. I chose hipolito as there are stories of lamps in the Med lasting well over 100 years. I can see no reason why this one will not make it.

I do most of my fishing in the Gulf of Mexico beach, Pier, and boat, decent fishing, I am always curious about the way a lot of anglers bind the bait to the hook across the big pond and wonder if I should be doing it here 😀. Always a fantastic film always value your wisdom Mr. G definitely want to fish the North Atlantic one day!
@TAFishing
@TAFishing 2 ай бұрын
I guess its mostly about long distance casting,so binding the bait down stops it exploding in fragments in the air when you cast hard. But it can also keep a tighter bait which slows the crabs down striping the bait off.

Great show Graeme. I swear I could smell that steak ! I believe larger fish tend to hang out in deeper water. Smaller fish likely know this and hug the shallows at night to avoid them. Sea birds don't fish at night either. Coleman is the biggest supplier of camping gear on this side of the pond. I have a Coleman lamp and a 2-burner stove from the 70's. Both burn "naphtha" fuel under pressure. I also agree with over fishing being the main cause of fewer fish, both on and off shore. Cheers

I remember the word Naptha...I think they used it for cleaning remoulded tyres in years gone by...I remember it when I was a kid and worked in my school time stripping the "pimples" from remoulded tyres in my Uncle's tyre factory with a whirling machine that spun the tyre and using a special forked and angled a special tool..I think I was about 12...How dangerous it would be considered now,but I survived to tell the tale.

Here's a funny "old" story that you reminded me of Grahame = cos of your old paraffin Tilley lamps 😁 = Years ago, during low tide, I worked my arse off getting lugworm to get the high tide at night, to fish. At that night, I chucked 2 rods out with huge lugworm baits, then put a couple of steak & kidney pies on top of my Tilley lamps to warm up. It was probably the sound of the surf & "hiss" of the Tilley lamps that sent me to sleep for over 5hours 😨 ... I missed the high tide fishing cos I was "out of it" 😨 But I still caught a couple of 2lb & 5llb self-hooked cod! My steak & kidney pies were proper cremated tho! 😨😨

Better way to stabilize rod rest is to hang a weighted object from your rod rest. The nearer the ground the better. This brings the centre of gravity low and inside the legs of the tripod. A carrier bag of shingle or bucket of water are ideal..........water means you may easily rinse hands etc.

Lucky its the same stuff I was born with. My Dad was going bald,my grandfather was a cue ball so I'm grateful to have my own hair !!.....Its probably because I shampoo it with Fish Oil ??

@@TAFishing My grandfather said time spent fishin' didn't count towards his mortality. He lived 'till 97yr old. He also had a full head of hair and only ever used soap on it. Maybe he had a point. I must go fishing more!!!!

think mine was the 350c.p. but I know many Cod fishermen used the 500...I have a big stake made from reed bar that I can hang mine from shaped like a Shepherd's crook.. I should film it sometime..maybe the next film.
But what is attacking my baits?
