This was our first full day in the Lake Tahoe area. We arrived a few days early to ensure we had time to acclimate. After getting our rental car we set off for Palisades Olympic Village to take the tram up the ski slope to expose ourselves to a high elevation of around 8,200’. Once there one of the hotel workers mentioned the Shirley Canyon Trail which would take us past waterfalls and eventually to a lake. She then mentioned you could take a trail from there to get to the tram for a free ride back down with a word of caution that the last tram down was at 5pm. Waterfalls and a free ride, who could pass that up?
Well, the first part of the trail past the waterfalls was wonderful. It was after this point that Pollyanna began feeling the effects of the heat and possibly the elevation. A decision was made to have Clover return with Pollyanna the way we came to catch the tram and wait for me and Slider at the top as we continued on. Boy did this trail test us. There was steep bouldering for a good portion of the trail to Shirley Lake and then trails that were not well marked leading to make our own trail over some difficult terrain following a not very detailed map. It was a long slog. The crazy part was that we ran into 2 sisters from San Francisco, Janette and Lynette, who were also trying to get to the tram. They put their trust in me and somehow we finally made it with maybe 1/2 hour to spare. This could have ended badly. Lucky for us, it didn’t.
