It's technically both. It's either Christian or Jewish numerology (they were not too distinct in the earliest times) from the Roman Empire period. They gave it as an epithet for emperor Nero. Nero is the beast. Not the devil like how pop culture frames it. Most of the middle east around the Mediterranean sea was basically part of the western world till the Romans lost the Levant and northern Africa to the birth of Islam and the Arab conquests that followed immediately afterward. This was the birth of the islamic world and the "middle east" as we know it today. The Ottoman Turks who styled themselves as the Sultanate of Rhum eventually reconquered those areas, but they were now Islamic "Romans" and "middle eastern" as you might say. So they were speaking different languages and writing in Arabic script, so they were much more inaccessible and mysterious to the rest of the western world; who were piddling around in Greek, Latin, or Frankish mostly. Nero's name is given in different ways though, "Nero" Roman style, or "Neron" Greek style, so 662 is also technically a way of referring to him, but it lacks the distinctive symmetry so it never became famous.
