Tail Concerto Review: Is it worth the money?

This time I review a fairly obscure adventure game on the original Playstation, Tail Concerto.
Some call it a "hidden gem" but I take an in depth look at this forgotten PS1 game to see if it's as amazing as some say it is, or if it's just another overpriced collector piece. Join me as I dive into Tail Concerto and see what all the fuss is about.
I appreciate you watching, and if you like what you see please take a look at my other video game review and list videos.
Take Care,
-Wiggles

For the record, I am aware that I mispronounce "concerto" throughout my review. I blame not being in band once throughout school, but it could just be I'm a complete doofus sometimes. You be the judge ;)

This game always randomly popped into my head since playing it on a demo disc back in the late 90s to the first couple years of the 2000s.

More or less, same. A buddy let me borrow it and I loved it. I was too focused on collecting everything so I never beat it.. though I didn't have any trouble with the controls or anything. I actually couldn't remember the name until I had a dream about it 3 years ago or so, and I've been planning on sailing the high seas for it lol

I personally had NO issues with the controls and the camera. Here's a tip for camera controls: 1. Obviously, there are the VIEW Buttons on L2 and L1, if I ever do platforming or chasing kittens, I set the camera on top of me. 2. If you hold the Grab/Throw button while holding something, it shows you where it lands and with the View Buttons, it changes how far or low it'll throw it. 3. THE LAST STAGE SUCKS.... (if you use the FAST Camera Option) Yes, in the Option menu you can change how fast the camera will follow you. This is one of the changes that was done for the US version. In the Last Stage, set it to SLOW and the camera won't go crazy when you jump. Hope this'll help^^ So everytime I hear someone talking about the controls or the camera.... I Get It. But I have played many games in my life and this game is faaar from bad controls. And apparently, this is CyberConnect2's FIRST GAME. That Is Impressive What They Did. Is this game still worth the money? No, but also yes. I have a modded PS1 and that's how I got to play this game. And to tell you the truth, I Love This Game. I've been looking for games that I'd truly enjoy and to play again. This is my most replayed game in my whole life. I hope anyone could at least appreciate this game, because this was their personal project and BANDAI didn't let them make a sequel UNTIL 2009. It Took Them Over 10 Years. So yeah, that's my relationship with Tail Concerto. Hope this clears up at least something^^

Other than a couple fight situations the camera was mostly fine for me and after like 2 minutes of playing I got used to the controls. Even though I just played it I’m probably gonna replay it in a couple days it’s that good to me so glad I found the game

I have to admit that I really have zero interest in this game but somehow I found your review very enjoyable despite that. It was informative, fun and lighthearted. I really like how your reviews are fairly objective and you examine both the positives and negatives of a game extensively regardless of your overall personal opinion of it. I also really like that you aren't swayed by the supposed "hidden gems" many collectors like to chase and try to justify the insane price tag for a mediocre or bad game. A game should be judged based on its own merits and not its rarity or a desperate attempt to find overlooked games on a console that are secretly awesome. This review definitely confirmed my decision never to play Tail Concerto, especially given the price, but at the same time I liked seeing the review and hearing about the nostalgic 90s cartoon vibe you got from it. I spent a great deal of my childhood watching shows like Duck Tails, Chip n' Dale: Rescue Rangers, Tail Spin, Gummi Bears, Darkwing Duck, etc and though furry culture has somewhat ruined those for me I still have a lot of nostalgia for them. Overall this is a great review that gave me some insight into and enjoyment from a game I never intend on personally playing. I think this is great for people considering whether or not to take the plunge with this expensive title and will help them decide whether or not its worth it.

Wow...congratulations, you have posted my favorite comment so far! I try and be as objective as I can while also realizing I have my own biases and subjectivity that will always find there way into my reviews to some degree. But overall I try to make my videos knowing that people who know little to nothing about a game might be watching and would want an honest take on what the game is like rather than trying to sell it to them or tell them how terrible or amazing it is without much justification. But again, thank you very much and I'm super happy you enjoyed it so much

I am a die hard PS1 fanboy. I was finally able to afford a copy of this game about 3 months ago, hence I purchased it. After a few months of thinking over my opinion of it. I LOVED IT. I currently place it among my top 3 favorite PS1 games. (Just below Castlevania Symphony of the Night which is my all time favorite) I personally loved the controls, to me it feels how a Robomech should feel. But yes the camera is ROUGH. This was a great review and I loved rewatching it after I could finally play it myself. Keep up the good work 🙂👍

Maybe it's because I grew up playing this game, but I didn't think the controls were that terrible back then (despite having decent comparaison to the crash/spyro series). Yes some parts were frustrating (you're showing a specific end part that made me RQ the game for the day back then and I still remember it) but the overall gameplay was rather enjoyable (enough for me to finish the game, which yeah I did for most of the few games I had back then... but I'd still argue the gameplay was above many 3d platformers of the time).

It might just be because I’ve adopted to shitty controls over the years (I speedrun Jet Grind Radio), but I didn’t honestly think the controls or movement momentum were that bad. The camera however IS bad, but there are later gen games (looking at Red Ninja) with worse camera dynamics that people enjoy. So if anything, I’d say don’t buy the game based on concerns of the length, camera nuisance, or if you have zero history with the game, but rather the feel of the game. Hell, and if you have a friend who owns it, borrow it.

I think at this point, no retro game is worth it's collecting price, because... emulators. However, collecting is different than just owning to play, so the $hundreds may be worth it to a collector, but if you just wan to play the game, it's free. You can even get close to the feeling of playing a Playstation game by using a blue-tooth enabled dual shock controller (plastics feel different than PSX, but the buttons all mush the same). And before anyone wants to judge the morality of using an emulator: Paying $400 for Tail Concerto is not going to give Atlas, Sony, or anyone who had any hand in making this game a single cent. Buying used games and downloading roms is the same from a publisher's end; they only go after emulation because the law allows them to (they've tried to shut down used games before and have basically succeeded in the current generation). Atlas isn't still selling this game, so it takes nothing away from them to "steal" it, since it's digital and copies are infinite.
