Recently bought one of the new 9000 Generators. Haven't started it yet as the weather has not been very good lately. But, not that I really have a NEED for one of these little ones, I'm tempted to get one of them too just to have on hand. Thanks for the overview. Looks like a decent little monster.

@@KevCentral I've go a Blue one that must be 12-14 yrs old. Broke the receptacle once, and now the petcock drips a bit. Bought a new Tailgator about 3-4 yrs ago, and it's been troublefree. (I keep it in my truck, so the leak is a deal breaker) I mean to find a replacement shutoff valve for the Blue one, and I'll have a backup. I've used these pretty steady for charging batteries in the field, the Tailgator rides around in the back of my Tahoe in support of it's twin Optima AGM system. I fly model airplanes and quads, and the truck is a portable charging system. When we lose power, my truck is a ready source of 12V for the LED lights and 120v for my pellet stove/furnace if it's winter. I swear by Redline oil (check the video by Desert Aircraft).

I love the little HF genny but its just not able to run the microwave in my truck camper. So I got a WENN 1800 watt amzn.to/2u6IaTa and seriously it uses less fuel and is only about 12 pounds heavier plus at 1800 watts you can run a small RV with no issue, even the 9000 btu AC unit. I have Champions and Wenn both, I like the newer Wenn personally. Plus its cheap.

I was hired away from a motorcycle dealer to work on industrial 2 strokes, as a rule they will out last a 4 stroke with proper fuel oil mix. The old Homelite model 9 was a 6000 hour motor, many ran over 12,000 hours.

Since it is a 2 stroke when turning it off would you recommend turning (closing) the fuel line and letting the fuel in the carb burn out to decrease a varnish build up in the carb. This would be vice using the on/off switch. thanks

+Leslie B there are many options of premixed 2 cycle fuel, any would work. though you are paying way more per gallon. mixing isn't hard.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 7 жыл бұрын
+ri mar Agreed. Don't buy premixed fuel. The generator comes with a mixing cup that allows you to measure out the needed oil ratio. There are also companies that make cups pre-marked with the mix levels for a wide variety of ratios and amounts of gasoline. I use one called the "Ratio Rite Measuring Cup." You can buy them for under $10.
@thefirewooddoctor
@thefirewooddoctor 7 жыл бұрын
KevCentral I bought a 1 gallon jug of pre-mix oil from the local farm supply store and use something similar to the Ratio-rite measuring cup you mentioned. Getting the oil in the one gallon jugs is the cheapest. I use the same oil for my 45cc chinese chainsaw. But the 50:1 mix is the same as for mu Husqvarna chainsaw so if I run short of the cheal fuel and need the power bow, I raid that fuel can.

My opinion is they steered away from the "Storm Cat" name because people were running the daylights out of them in emergency situations and burning them up."Tail Gator" kind of plants an image in your mind of using this generator in leisure situations. Like a tail gate party, small camping trip. It's all an attempt by Harbor Freight to cut down on warranty claims. Like your videos, professional and educational! Subscribed!

+D J Tanner Thanks for the comments! You may be onto something. I've seen countless videos where people were relying on a StormCat for off-grid living. I've had great success with my StormCat (just sold it to a coworker,) but i would be hard pressed to rely on an $88 HF generator for a main power source. Tailgator does imply recreational use, so you may be correct.

The design is very mature. These clones have been marketed under dozens of brand names and are made in by many different companies. Often the entire carb with interchange but say the needle inside is often different ,and the float and the bowl too. My Homier Tools 1250A was bought in 2005 and they had them for sale in their "harbour Freight in traveling circus tent" eons before I bought one. The markeing on mine says 1250 peak ie BS and is 800 continous which is a strench too. ie more like 700. Mine also has unregulated 12VDC to charge car batteries. Mine generator was 69.99 in 2005 and they were once 59.99 eons ago. The more expensive ones had the dual output ie 12 VDC

I suspect these things have been rebranded and sold all over the place. I picked up a yellow one from princess Auto which is like Canada's harbour freight about 12 years ago. Never regretted it. It has hundreds of hours on it now, always starts and runs fine on 2-3 pulls and does the job great! Lots of hate out there for these but I guess I got a good one. Don't get me wrong, I don't mistreat it, I don't think it's a nuclear power plant, I look after it, it runs 32-1 oil mix so I can standardize my pre mix to run my 2 stroke lawnboys mower and stihll blower outta the same Jerry can. Ive changed the plug out once and it starts and runs smooth and quiet even on the coldest days after just a few minutes of partial choke. Figure I got the one the supervisor put together by the book to show the newbies how it's done!

Thanks for sharing. it's on sale now and plan to pick it up. have an older one that knocks a lot. did your knock? what do you think of putting diesel after it has warmed up instead of of mixed gas? since 2 stroke engines can handle mixed oil than 4 stroke, wonder how it will go? of course the air fuel ratio May need to be adjusted. Please keep us posted. ☺
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 7 жыл бұрын
+limrc1 Thanks for the comment. I've had multiple older "StormCat" models. I have a playlist of my experiences with them - including head-to-head testing. The older 60338 models have always knocked. My 69381 will when it doesn't have a load on it, but keeps on ticking. Regarding running diesel in place of a 2-cycle mixture, that's not something I'd be comfortable with. I always run an exact mixture using Lucas 2-cycle oil, Sea foam, and non-ethanol gas. I'll be updating as I get this one up to 25 hours before handing it off. I'll also be picking up another one to compare the different item number of both tailgators. I suspect there will be the same differences as there were between the older 60338 and 69381.

How do I hook up a generator to my breaker box?
@thefirewooddoctor
@thefirewooddoctor 7 жыл бұрын
My Tailgator, the first one, ran fine until the carb leaked fuel. Was within the 90day initial warranty period. That means the 2yr warranry I got with the first one is not affected and it transfers over. So I got a replacement Tailgator with a new initial 90day warranty and kept my 2yr extended warranty. Harbor Freight has a great warranty program that builds customer loyalty. Kev, can you showis again how to add the hour meter to the generator and the sparkplug cap replacement? Lost track of that video, and also would like to know the name brand sparkplug replacement number.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 7 жыл бұрын
Agreed. No matter the opinions on the quality of Harbor freight products, and there are some very good and some VERY bad products, their initial 90-day warranty is rock solid. As a bonus the extended warranties are very fairly priced. I have put a link below to the existing StormCat hour meter/NGK plug modification video. I will be uploading a new one soon so the TailGator has its own specific video, but for now you can use this one as a guide as it is the same generator minus the green paint. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a86DoaphxN_SZ6c.html Thanks for commenting, and good luck with your new generator!

KevCentral Thanks for the link to the video. The sparkplug wire is quite tiny and fragile. Was shocked that the Tailgator atill has that tiny wire clip thingy to attach to the sparkplug. Am hoping it holds up well, as it will be my only source of power for Labor Day weekend to power my APAP sleep apnea machine.
@KevCentral
@KevCentral 7 жыл бұрын
+Jeffrey Beyer Yeah. It's Super flimsy. The 24 model's plug boot is slightly better, but only in the sense that it couldn't get much worse and still he considered functional. I ripped the boot on both (24 & 25 models) of them the first time i checked the spark plug. It will hold up just fine as long as you don't mess with it repeatedly. All that is required for it to function is the tiny clip prongs to be pinched into the cable wire and the other end slid onto the plug. The flimsy boot will do that job for quite a while. Once you can make the NGK upgrade you'll never have a worry with the plug or cap. In the next few days I'll be uploading a video on a new generator you may find interesting, so keep a eye out. Also, make sure you run-in the generator for at least a good 10-hours before depending on it. My experience with these (and I've had quite a few) is that you'll know within about 10 hours if something isn't right. If they make it past 10 without any signs of issue then they are likely to last for quite some time. Also-also, you mention this will be used for a CPAP machine. Does that have sensitive electronics? Remember, the TailGator, while effective for what it does, makes dirty power that can be rough on sensitive electronics. What happens if your CPAP loses power during sleep? I hope you can still breath. The TailGator will provide about 5 hours at a 50% load. How long do you usually sleep?
@thefirewooddoctor
@thefirewooddoctor 7 жыл бұрын
KevCentral 6-7hrs in a normal night of sleeping. The mask is setup to allow normal brrathing in case of power failure. I have the Kill-a-wat meter, Hz and voltage remain very stabile on my generator. Am thinking of a small inverter generator for at the race track. But most of them are expensive.

I would keep all our phones charging and bedroom ice cold all night. I'd wake up and give this little guy a break and start up the big boy and burn big fuel for the wife and kids. Ok, not sure why the guy is talking about overspray, I will tell you the REAL DEAL on these units-! About a 3 years ago I had my electricity shut-off.. trying to say my place, paying property taxes, either lose the roof or the electric. Of course I chose roof. Purchased a decent generator from sportsman's guide on 4 pay, she ran like a champ, even though from china. My brother also picked me up one of these little ones from harbor freight, (the red one) item# 60338. Does it work, Yes-! Is it loud for it's size yeah, Will it hurt you-? YES-!!!!! Initial startup on unit is fine, but after a short warm up, any restart attempt, for what ever reason this little monster back-kicks, and trys to take your arm with it-!!! Can't tell you how many times it almost or has dislocated my shoulder-!!! Where i would be laid up for next day or 2. Shitty design, something missing in desigh plans... causing it to back-kick after warm and she could really hurt you if you let it-!!! When I was younger my father told me about all the men when he was young who were one armed because the early model T's with the front crankshafts would backfire/backkick, and take their arms off-!!!! Again, design flaw-!!! Granted, it's a small engine, but when it does it, hurts like a bastard-!!! My brother didn't believe me and wanted to try it himself, but I refused to let him-!!! Didnt want a hospital trip or here him whine for days-!!! Now, she does run and i did use it for at least a year straight every otherday. Some days just needed a break from running the bigger one. Would run the little one 4,5, or 6 hours a day, mainly to run the fridge. And she did do it, but just barely. Fridge draw is 6.5 amps so I was pulling about 750 watts give or take, off course i was most concerned about startup. With that draw, was worried I'd smoke the fridge. But shes still running-!!! Would leave her plugged in for about 10 minutes first before turning on the fridge. Hoping the startup caps would charge... Little girl would do it though-!!! You will get the 110/115v pure sine wave out at 60hz and you can run all of you sensitive electronics on her fine, I have ran computers, scanners, radios, even microwaves, (as long as they're within the wattage range) without a problem, and for the price, it can be a Godsend when you are in a bind, but again please watch the back-kick of the unit when it is warm, because it really can hurt you man-!!! Good Luck to all and hope this helps-!!! PS: my unit manufacturered December 2013. Don't know if they corrected the problem.

+mixwell1983 The Chicago Electric and StormCat are the older version of the same model. You'll only see Tailgator from this point forward on the Harbor Freight site and in stores. i know right these machines are a nightmare. get the step up 4 stroke champion 1000watt machine.. they go on sale once a year for $200 Canuk dollars. or you can find them at pawn shops for $100. it'll give you an 8 hour run time no mixing 2 stoke oil.. just make sure you change your synthetic oil every 50 hrs clean your spark arrestor every 100. add sea foam to each gas tank fill up a cap or two or as required and to your crank case as well each oil change. STP fuel system cleaner each oil change just 2 caps added to the gas tank DO NOT add it to your crank case oil.. ive got over 4500 hrs on mine. depending if your in a city or not you can change your filter when it looks dirty like every 500 hours if your outside a city. ive found the manuals recommended air filter clean every 50-100 hours is a waste of time.. change the spark plugs whenever she stops purring. i went from changing NGK plugs every 125 hours to once every 300 hours since switching to adding seafoam instead of STP carb cleaner. i'm thinking adding seafoam to the crank oils probably making some of the difference in spark plug run life

+Edward LaFlamme I wouldn't say they are pieces of junk. There is a certain degree of luck involved to get a good one, but a good one will last for quite a while. They do have their place tailgating i suppose. as their rubber grommet feet would work well on a hard metal surface. but they are noisy, dirty and expensive when compared to the step up 4 stroke models. heres a link to the one i bought they call it a 1200 watt but its 1080 watt continuous www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/champion-1200w-gas-generator-0550314p.html

Ah. I'm sure that's a great generator, but i'm a fan of generators with a more friendly portable design. Single carry handle style. Once I lose the ability to easily tote the generator I start thinking it is best to step up the wattage with a larger unit since it isn't as portable. Thanks again for all the comments. I appreciate them...keep em coming!
