Angry Video Game Nerd (AVGN) episode 186: Taito Legends. These Taito compilations are for the PlayStation 2 and include 68 games total. (Volume 1 came with 29 games and Volume 2 has a bunch more, with 39 games.) Extra features include interviews with some of the game designers, original sales flyers, and arcade cabinet art, but most of those are in Volume 1. Some of the collection includes: Space Invaders, The Newzealand Story, Bubble Bobble, Jungle Hunt, and a ton of Taito's shooters, fighters, platformers, and puzzle games.

Apparently Lick Joe's name is a mistranslation and he's supposed to be Rick Joe, which makes way more sense. Still, the mistranslated name is pure gold.

its mainly because the letter L doesnt really exist in japan. They usually use R instead. Because its hard to tell whats an actual R, and whats replacing an L, it's common for Ls to always be used.

New Zealander here. The New Zealand Story is pretty much the most historically accurate retelling of New Zealands history. We use the levels to teach NZ geography.

Fan from Japan here. The snake like enemy in KikiKaikai is a monster (Yokai) from Japanese folklore that’s a woman with a long neck and is often called RokuroKubi. The title of the game KikiKaikai roughly translates to Mysterious World of Monsters

I thought it was supposed to emulate something out of Duck Hunt, maybe with squares on screen indicating targets since the original arcade game used a light gun. But I will guess no - that's the muzzle flash from your character's gun.

so, when i was a young in the early 90s, i was in the hospital with pneumonia. i remember borrowing the NES from the play room and i was playing a game where i was some kind of ninja character and all i can remember is jumping around from tree to tree. i think this is the game and i thought that i would never see this game again. If you play Shmups, Legends 2 on PS2 is a must own. It has several classic Taito arcade shooters making this arguably the best PS2 game of that genre.

If you get the chance, I'd highly recommend going back to Hat Trick Heros (known as Euro Football Champ in the UK, and presumably Europe). Not for the football/soccer. But you realise they have included beat em up mechanics in the game. Which makes it a much more fun experience, especially when finding the most creative ways to get players sent off for fouls.

To be fair, all three are common villains in Japanese culture and fiction. The businessmen are often in league with the mafia and involved in shady, coercive real estate deals. Kind of like the one depicted in Food Wars, but they actually happen.

As a new Zealand citizen, I can definitely say kiwis do indeed shoot bow and arrows, smoke cigarettes and and fly on geese. Frozen whales also are existing creatures and they are extremely common. It's almost guaranteed to spot one when you are looking into the ocean.

Phoenix’s sound design is so shrill because the audio circuitry on the game’s hardware was basically thrown together from spare parts-the classical music that plays at the beginning actually comes from the sound chip for a musical doorbell!!!

Fun fact, Plotting was actually released on the Game Boy (international) and Famicom (Japan only) as Flipull. Both ports are pretty fun actually and move faster than the arcade version appears to.

There was a candy shop by my middle school that had an arcade machine of Rastan. It was great. My lunch money was gone before school started.

Aw, you gotta give Volfied a chance. It gets really creepy and strategic, as you build tiny walls to trap the creature and make it shrink. Don’t make the final cut (like Roger Waters) until you’ve shrunk it down to almost nothing and can claim the whole area at like 98%

It didn't, they're still around today, though they mostly make Darius, Space Invaders and Bust-A-Move games these days.

Square Enix bought them. Taito still exist though pretty fractured, most doesn't even released under Square Enix.

I've played Cameltry. Fun game. I also remember Taito did port that game on the Super Nintendo as "On the Ball", which was compatible with the SNES Mouse. Also, speaking of Pink Floyd, I swear the BGM playing during Plotting sort reminds of reminds me of "Break in the Wall".

I really loved these Arcade compilations, I have many on the PSP and PS2, original Xbox. Where else can you really play them unless you own the actual Arcade machines.

I liked the concept but it was too hard too quick. You died not even a minute into the game after there were bad guys all shooting at you at the same time Operation Thunderbolt was better and a bit more fair

My grandfather had this really rare compilation NES cart back in 1995 he got from a business associate from Egypt. It had Front Line on it and I used to play it all the time cause I was six and it was the most violent game on the cart. It also had Mappy and Ice Climbers which were also my favorites.

30:38 I probably have an explanation for that awful name "Lick Joe". You should know that Japanese people often confuse the "l" and the "r" when they try to speak western languages. So as they wanted to find westerners for the characters in their game, they probably didn't care if it was "r" or "l" and had to call their character "lick joe" instead of "Rick Joe".

The fact that Arkanoid and Chase HQ are not included in this collection is a crime. Other than that, this looks like a cool collection. Love Taito, one of the best Japanese game companies.
