It would be cool to see a skyrail station at Mornington. Even one under the plaza like at Box Hill. Massive ask there, but since they've found the money to put all these other stations on their own bridges, not too big a deal.

As a commuter on the Gippsland line (for now), the new track layout as East Pakenham is very much welcome. There's been many times, especially since the sidings were ripped up at Pakenham to make way for the skyrail, that we've had to wait several minutes while both platforms are occupied at Pakenham before we can stop there. The Gippsland line is already a long-ish commute into the city from where I get on at Warragul so if this can speed travel time up a bit, I'll be happy with it. I haven't had a chance to visit East Pakenham or the new Pakenham stations yet as V/Line services aren't running yet due to other occupation works at Longwarry & Bunyip, but once our trains are back online I'll be sure to check each one out.
@robertashworth9150

V/Line needs to rethink the way it services the Gippsland line - it still runs trains like it was 1880 with most trains terminating at Traralgon, a stopping all stations pattern and apparently no thought at all about how to handle the huge growth in Drouin & Warragul. I think a reasonable portion of trains should originate at Warragul and most Traralgon trains should run semi express, with Warragul trains handling the very limited pax numbers between Pakenham and Drouin. I can't see any reason why an up peak service from Traralgon needs to stop at any of those very small towns - from what I see virtually no one alights there.
@Daviesh
@Daviesh 2 ай бұрын
@@robertashworth9150 Completely agree, I did a year of commuting from Sale a couple of times a week. I had to drive to Traralgon to get decent service frequency and then the train would get ram packed at Drouin/Warragul. I’m in the Metro footprint now but have family in Drouin, I don’t then the State government has had any thought about how to handle the explosive growth. Peak services originating/terminating at Warragul are needed.

@@robertashworth9150 Also there are no food services on this line like there was in the past. It’s ludicrous to expect commuters to travel from Bairnsdale to Melbourne with no onboard refreshments. Lift your game, VLine …

@@robertashworth9150 "... it still runs trains like it was 1880 with most trains terminating at Traralgon ..." I'd be very surprised if most trains were terminating at Traralgon in 1880. The goal of the Department of Transport seems to be to increase frequencies, reliability, and consistency, not speed. If you have a mix of stopping and express services, then you either double the number of services (costly) or you reduce frequencies for some stations, and you have inconsistent times due to express trains and stopping trains having different journey times. I'm not saying whether that's a good or bad thing; just pointing out what seems to be the intentions. It's not all that many years since there were Warragul trains, and there may be merit in reintroducing them, but they'd likely be just a handful of peak period trains to supplement the Traralgon service.

It’s now getting renamed to the Yanchep line as Yanchep in the outer limits of the Perth Metro area to the north. It means as well that the train trip between Yanchep and Mandurah will be 150km in overall length!

When I was young my grandfather was the station master at Nar Nar Goon (East of Pakenham). I can remember the endless flashes of the trees which arched over the highway. It was WAY out into the country. And was served by steam trains. Then they wanted to electrify the line and duplicate it so they had to demolish the stationmaster's residence and that was the end for Nar Nar Goon. It is interesting that the new station is mid way between the two. But the obvious logic is that they wanted somewhere WITHOUT the contstraints of housing. The trouble is that if you put a station where the people are NOT and BECAUSE the people are not there you have created a different future problem.

Let’s build a roof that does sweet fa in protecting passengers from the sun, rain, wind etc. Look up Corby for the older design and Meridian Water or Brent Cross West for the new design. They suck. @solace6633

Nah its actually all due to need to bidirectional running as Vline route isn't actually all duplicated yet so trains can come in on both sides prior to Pakenham Station. You also have the times they run to just Pakenham as well, when works happens. It was just a very convenient way to build the extra infrastructure while eventually getting a return on it, as the town grows.

Good video. Answering a couple of points. HCMT trains show E Pakenham because East Pakenham doesn't fit and would result in the front of the train simply showing "East". Comeng and Siemens trains show East Pakenham in full. The change trains announcements aren't incorrect as they refer to destinations of services, not line names. As you said, the line is the Pakenham line.
@Taitset
@Taitset 2 ай бұрын
Thanks Damo! I did think that was probably the reason for the change train announcements, I'd still say it's an inconsistency though, as for all the other lines the final terminus and line name are the same. (Not as bad as the old Sydneham/Watergardens thing mind you!)

3:03 - "It's also no longer permitted to install sets of points on Viaducts" That's interesting, what's the story behind that? I presume it's a Victorian railway rule because WA is building points on viaducts right now with their own extensions, including replacing an old ground level terminus with an elevated through station at Armadale (WA) similar to Pakenham. That station will have 3 platforms and will not only have points and crossovers on a viaduct, but will also elevated dead-end overrun sidings/future track expansion points that just stop at a void.
@Taitset
@Taitset 2 ай бұрын
Yes definitely a local rule, I'm not sure what the exact reasoning is, but probably something about reducing the (already tiny) risk of derailment on a viaduct.
@user-wy4ci7yj6b
@user-wy4ci7yj6b 2 ай бұрын
I think also a factor would be the method the LXRA has developed to streamline the construction of the many new viaducts around Melbourne. Lines enclosed in seperate channels would not allow for the instalation of points.

@@pete89111 Space is the main reason behind it. I suspect V/Line services will eventually terminate at Dandenong and city passengers will have to transfer to a Metro service. Inconvenient, sure, but after the Metro Tunnel comes online there will be much greater service capacity, hopefully ensuring reduced crowding especially for V/Line passengers who might have luggage. Alternatively, through running could be retained for Bairnsdale services, as presumably those services are more likely to have passengers with large bags compared to services to and from Traralgon. The ultimate would be to construct an eastern RRL, but can’t see that happening anytime soon.

I was at Pakenham on Saturday when it was raining slightly throughout the day, the station did an alright job at protecting us from it, but the rain was coming in at an angle so the roof kind of did nothing. One thing to note about the car park at East Pakenham, the little kiss and go loop they have at the end is slightly confusing as every single car I saw overshot the entrance to the car park, not realising it was the last one, then had to run around the loop to head back into the car park. Hopefully they will get some bus routes at East Pakenham as the current ones running out of Pakenham don't run at the best frequencies and stop quite early on in the evening and barely run, if at all on a Sunday.

This is a great example. The Springfield Line is a great example of a line's final Station doesn't always make the line name.

Almost went to those two stations the same day but decided against it due to the weather, was quite chilly as well. Got to see pakenham the day after (I swear those stairs were gonna collapse bellow me) but I’m yet to see east pakenham

Loved the quick reference to the idiotic shelters at Monty. Only been there once or twice since it opened so I haven't wet weather tested it, but basic physics says that high angled shelters are a terrible idea when all people want is to not be wet.

Can I just say, both Pakenham and East Pakenham come up on Google maps, as being in East Pakenham. However East Pakenham Station is even further east, than Pakenham station. This seems like it would be a big cause for confusion, due to the name.

Hi Martin. Alex here, the guy from West Richmond on the Mernda shuttles day. Excellent video, I think the reason why that siemens pid said “east pakenham services” because the services actually terminate there, it isn’t because the line is called the east pakenham line.
@Taitset

Yeah I thought that was probably the reason, still an inconsistency though, as for every other line the final terminus and line name are the same thing.

Fun fact the "east Pakenham" suburb is looking at a name change because of a directive that says directional names are to be avoided. So maybe the Stations Name will also be updated and the flow though into a line name update. 🤷

The reason for the different descriptions is that the trains are either express from Caulfield to South Yarra or express from Malvern to South Yarra so they need a different description. I don't about the third one as all stop at South Yarra.

The use of Normal vs. East doesn't seem unusual to me, trains report the station they will be terminating at, not the end of line station. It does sound like the change line announcement got mixed, maybe. And we sort of have been here before, with the Werribee Racecourse Station, the line's been called Werribee since the electrification, but electrification sort-of extended to the racecourse station
@Taitset
