In this video I share both of my retro/vintage Taiyo Typhoon Hovercraft toys. The black one was a gift from my parents for Christmas 1989 and the white one I happened to find in a Gold Coast QLD op shop in 2021.
They both are operational, but I'm missing a controller for the black one so in this video I demo the white one.

I'm sorry about the sound cutting in and out.😣 Three memories I have of the Typhoon as a child: 1. How difficult it was to control, that my Dad superglued a piece of perspex to the front as a makeshift bumper bar to help prevent damage to the shell when I ran into things. 2. The woeful runtime of about 8 or so minutes on a 12 hour charge of the Arlec rechargeable AA batteries. Or maybe it was 12 minutes on an 8 hour charge.🤔Regardless, those three motors drained the batteries at an alarming rate. 3. Not wanting to risk hovering over water although the advertising said that it was possible. I simply didn't trust that it would maintain lift or I'd accidently shut it off and it would sink.

It was indeed 8 minutes, i think it even said that somewhere on the box! I had a set of Arlec AAs i used in the tray, but also got two of the yellow 9.6v Metro battery packs for it later on. I remember not buying a new battery the day i got my Scorcher only to find out Metro decided to change the plug so it took the white battery pack instead! I used to use mine at the beach, it ran fine on the hard wet sand and went through the water fine. The book says avoid salt water, and the screws in mine did eventually rust, but it lasted a few years. I used to take it straight up to the taps and wash it all off with fresh water when i ran all the batteries dead. They don't sink even if they sit stopped in the water for a while, there should be a big piece of styrofoam in the rear which you can see if you pull out the skirt. They'll float pretty much indefinately, the only thing that would bring it down is if you hit a wave and either had a lot of water over the top or flipped it over. Pressing the pause button on the top would stop it going under! I just bought two on ebay, i reckon i'll take one to the beach to relive childhood memories 😊

@@CaseTheCorvetteMan Thanks for sharing such a detailed recollection, it sounds like you had some great adventures with it, especially at the beach. When I dissembled them to clean I noticed the little piece of foam and it's good to know that they proved to be more durable that I thought, so I may take one to the beach. My mum managed to find the remote controller for the black one, but my attempt at mending the tears in the skirt was unsucessful, that it only partially lifts and won't move. Not too keen to switch the skirt over from the white one simply to get the black one going I'll see what other options I have first.

@@billymasonpi where are you located? If you can give me a few weeks i may have a spare skirt for you, i'm waiting on all my recent purchases to arrive😁 I'm in QLD. I've just bought 4 originals, 2 Super Typhoons, and a US Typhoon 2 (which appears to be the same as the Super Typhoon, but i'll know more when they're all here)

@@CaseTheCorvetteMan That's very kind thank you, and that will be quite a collection once it arrives! I'm in NSW a couple of hours north of Sydney and more than happy to pay if a spare is available. Thanks again!

@@billymasonpi Let me see what i can come up with for ya, From all i can tell the skirts on the ones i bought are mostly in good shape. Shame you're not up here in QLD mate, would've been great to get a few of us together and go for a blast along the beach, just for old time sake!!

Thank-you for this! Brings back about 2 weeks of childhood memories - a birthday present I think - before I took my one back to Big W for a refund. My mum argued that it wasn't worth the 5 minutes of run time, to then need about 6 hours to charge the battery-pack back up! :) I imagine now days the batteries could be a lot better for this kind of product...

You're most welcome The-Cosmic_Hobo.😁 Dealing with the charge vs run time issue was frustrating. I recall repeatedly checking the placement of the AAs in the overly sensitive Arlec charger, ensuring the red lights signaled the batteries were charging, only to return later and discover one or more lights had turned off! Anyway, I'm committed to finding the remote for the black Typhoon and will another video, this time outdoors, where I can push it to its top speed or even a drag race.

I had one but got mine in 1990, the same white one you have. The Hurricane was out at the time, which was a bit smaller and less functional than the Typhoon. I really wanted the red one, seems the black one is very common and it always seemed to be the most stocked colour, the white one wasn't as common but that red one was very uncommon!

In the Australia the black Typhoon appeared to be more popular and I had no idea that they even produced a red version!

@@billymasonpi i haven't forgotten you mate, i've been a bit busy of late and struggled to keep up! Will have a spare air skirt for you soon, i'll flick you an email when i can get around to it. I still want to do a line up video of all mine, i've added a few, got some Super Typhoons, a couple of the Japanese limited edition models (blue and the silver) and a Typhoon 2. Will have to get to that when i can!
