Take Aim, Even Badly

A brief video on the utility of taking aim--even badly. At least it's a start. Most of the positive emotion that will characterize your life (at least of the sustaining kind) will be a consequence of watching yourself move successfully toward a valued goal. That means that there is little chance of meaningfully happiness and fulfillment in the absence of well-defined and high-order goals.
So make some :)

4 years ago, I did something without knowing what I was doing. I created my first educational course on Udemy. As a stupid teen. The course was REALLY bad. But I did it. Because I didn't know better. Had I known better at that time, and been more knowledgeable, I may not have created the course. Because then I would have known that I would create a bad course. So I wouldn't have done it. If I had just thought about it, I wouldn't have done it, and I would have NOTHING by now. But I did it, I did badly but I did. And now it's my profession, and I create good courses now. So, just DO what you want to do. Do badly. But do it.

sesmcawameqi Me, too. Other manifestations of this may be contributors to my hoarding behavior. I react physically and emotionally to the acquisition of goods. (Elation) I react physically and emotionally when goods leave my possession. (Remorse) And perhaps worst of all, I feel dread when someone expresses a need for something I have let go. And it’s worse if it is within mere days. I also suffer from analysis paralysis. Jordan B Peterson gives me hope and guidance, and restores my faith in myself. I am so grateful that I get to live in a world where his feet roam the earth. I don’t worship him...like a savior...like a messiah...like Christ...or any such thing. His influence has no price tag. This is absolutely accurate. I've learned this in an art class, just start drawing, something will come to you, just start writing (for a research paper) even if it's cruddy, in doing so, you get the crud part out of the way as you revise and you replace it with something better, it always works. This is how I approach most things now, that I want to do. Just start. Action has to override thinking in the beginning.

Dr. Peterson gives absolutely liberating advice in suggesting writing a bad thesis. You can do that! About 20 or more years ago, the singer songwriter Harry Chapin appeared in an intimate Soundstage performance in the PBS studios in Chicago. During the break he hung out and chatted with the audience. Someone asked, "Harry, how did you learn to write such great songs?" He answered that he wasn't sure but he knew for certain that the first step was to write 100 bad songs. My eyes opened wide at that news. I thought, "I can do that!". i am more than halfway through that assignment. (And somehow still married.) i am old now and may never complete it, but what joy I have had in trying. I never would have started if I had waited until i could write a "good" song. Go for it! And in your spare time, watch all of JP's lectures.

Dr. Peterson, I am very happy you exist. Thank you for your work and integrity. A friend once told me that love is the affirmation of the goodness of someone's existence. I love you, Jordan. You've done good in my life. There is more light since you've helped point me in the right direction. Thank you. God's love

thank you professor for being as truthful and as hardworking as you are. My counsciousness thanks you. you have shaken the foundations of my mind that was turning bitter and dreadful... paranoid... and with enourmous self pitty. Thank you for giving me the courage to climb of this hole, where I buried my self in. Ive been steadily changing towards a brighter path in my life since I discovered you, and I can't thank you enough. Truly you are a loving perosnality. Don't let criticism get to you my friend, stay as calm as you have always been and using logical and rational thinking as your weapon, because it is very effective. Please also consider adressing one of the problems that benefited this procrastination/depressive/anxious state, that I haven't heard you adressing. Which is my parents have always done everything for me when I was young from cooking me dinner to as simple as making my bed and cleaning my room, and now I'm in a foreign country taking care of my own life, and I'm very messy lazy and my attention span is that of a fish(thats mainly due to the ammount of time I spent on the computer), and changing my habbits has been a very difficult journey, I cant even get my self to study properly, because that implicates effort. None the less, a big hug from Me. Stay Humble.

I bought the future authoring suite 2 years ago and haven’t started at all. I still have the log in it’s all ready to do but I haven’t for exactly the reasons he has laid out. More than anything I am scared of holding myself accountable and failing. Without a goal I am never failing. This is by far one the best clips I have seen of JPB. This video is extremely useful and letting me know that I should start and just do it badly and therefore be moving forward. I just had the realization that writing this comment was also a form of procrastination and delaying myself from doing the future authoring.

Dr. Peterson, I am a big fan. After listening to your lectures and countless interviews, I believe that there is a component to satisfaction that is overlooked. Toil, good old fashioned labor. As a young man, I scrubbed pots and pans at a job that anyone could with no experience as long as they committed to working hard. It gave me the opportunity to earn respect and to respect the labor of others. It provided an excellent foundation for an aimless 15 year old boy. 30 years later, I am an administrator on an array of some of the most powerful computers in the world. In my spare time I exercise those skills that I learned so many years ago. I have what I can only describe as a not for profit catering business. I don't what I would do if I didn't have something to put my back into.

Jordan, this is tremendously powerful for me. I have no idea what I am doing & I am attempting to learn a new skill of real estate photography compositional editing. Being honest with myself, I have been procrasting from doing it because I am scared to try it and fail but hearing your encouraging words is genuinely all I needed to hear to begin my challenging work. "As I stumble forward I will illuminate and inform myself. And perhaps thats partly because the world is made of information, and If I encounter with it & entangle with it, then it will inform me and I become informed. Thus I am in-form-ation and then I am ready" THANK YOU

This was the thinking I had when I took my first after school art class at the age of 8. I remember thinking oh God I'm the worst artist ever... but I have to be good at something. I'm pretty sure I can learn this so I'll just do it until I'm good. Flashforward some 8 years of art class later I remembered what I thought and looked at the Sargent reproduction oil painting in front of me I had just finished and thought, holy shit I did it. Later on I ended up an art teacher for a short while, teaching many kids who thought they couldn't draw. Full circle. Keep going, do it badly because it can get better with will.

One of the best points I’ve ever heard from Jordan Peterson. I saw him in Orlando and he said the same thing to a question about what a young man in his twenties should do with his life. Peterson simply said, “Something. . .” and explained this logic. It’s powerfully true.

Thank you for what you do JP, I hope that some day I can meet you in person and shake your hand and thank you properly in person. You might not even realize the impact you have because it goes beyond viewer statistics. The kind of people who listen to what you say are the kind of people who really care about the direction their life goes, and those are people who end up changing the course of history. Even they need guidance and wisdom along the way.
