Our security and privacy are more crucial today than they've ever been. So don't entrust video streams that you may be capturing in your house to companies you may not trust!! Grab video streams from your IP cameras directly and then use your own infrastructure to access them so you're 100% in control!!

I bought a Reolink camera for the garden recently and they actually publish their RTSP URI which is a very refreshing change!!

would be nice to know which camera models to buy for the best case scenario. I can make sure they are supported from the website you posted , but which ones are more easily "hackable" and provide a full range of features with this method.

What you say here is exactly the right strategy...if you see a camera that looks good, take a look on the I spy website to see if it's listed on there. The cameras I have are badged as Tenvis and all of those have worked out really well but I don't want to really suggest other makes or specific models because obviously I only know for sure about the ones I have. But so long as it's on the website, you should be ok.

I don't trust the cameras by default. What you might like to do is prevent the camera from any/all internet access (LAN only), eg using your router's settings. Then use a VPN like wireguard if you ever want to look at the cameras while away from home.

Funny you should mention frigate...playing with that right now...but with that you still need to configure it with the video stream details and that's what this vid is about 😃
