Tripping is better than full takedowns in a streetfight or self defense encounter, but if you absolutely need to get to the ground the double leg is a really powerful way to do it. In this video we cover some considerations for executing it on pavement.

hard2hurt idk bro...I guess it all depends. While most dudes probably don't know how to finish a guillotine choke with skill, idk if I want a strong, determined guy squeezing/pull my head off. I definitely understand and agree with what you're saying. Getting your neck cranked on might be better than catching a strike/gouge on the way into the clinch. As always, great content.

I dig it. I've been guillotine'd by friends much smaller, and even my wife at one point so it's one I'm typically avoiding but lifting the head after the shot is not something I have learned so hopefully that'll save my neck in the future. Just as force of habit I probably wouldn't but at least now I have a safe option for it, or safer than having to fight it off once it's already in lol.

I usually offered it if I was going for a double leg but I dont use my hands to get the take down ... I lift their body up and hop up , sweep their knees out with the back of my feet and ride them to the ground gaining full top control. Has never failed me in the few times I had to use it in a streetfight. I'm unusually flexible too so it always took my opponents off guard

sanda and muay thai i think are the ones who emphasize these most. being striking arts with no ground work, and limits to how long a clench can last just like boxing, they have refined clench based takedowns to the fastest most efficient and reliable ones, that are also not sacrificing defense vs striking. the only time i would shoot in a defense situations is in order to not get shot, if someones reaching for a gun and im in shooting range, i might shoot because the risk is suddenly worth it.

When I wrestled freestyle we almost always used the single leg takedown or arm duck to get full back control and slam the opponent face first into the mat. On concrete this ends a fight instantly. Most street fights start with an attempted sucker punch so ducking the punch and gaining rear control is fairly natural and the opponents momentum works in your favor. The trick is to use a palm strike to the forearm or elbow of the incoming punch as you are ducking and stepping around your opponent.

Head up! When you shoot your head is a weapon, my coach would always say "that's the hardest part your body, butt him with it." I have double legged guys in bar fights and have never had to give a guillotine away or eaten a punch or knee. For those situations it worked and everyone is different. I'm not proud of that but I was young and pissed off. Shots should be timed just like punches in boxing. Or just when you know it's about to happen and he steps in range. Strike first strike fast. Set a trap. Jab shoot. Feint high shoot. When they throw those embarrassing hay makers roll; the duck under is usually always there. Wrestling has always finished the job when they lasted through my boxing. Now that I'm over 30 and not such a hot headed idiot I am sorry for all the trouble I've caused but greatful for the experience and lessons I've learned. Competition! if you want to get advanced you must compete in your craft. I would never be confident in my skills if I had never used them in a ring or on the mat in competition for self defense. Love and respect.

Your shoulder should contact your opponents pelvis before you hit your drop step. Thier weight should resist you...slowing the fall basically. If you hit it right you can do it on concrete. Besides...for those of you who never been in a real fight you dont feel pain. A lil booboo on your knee is nothing

@bowmanpwner Its hard to waistlock in sport grappling, but in mma or street its easy because of punches. Either throw a jab then shoot a body lock. Or duck under their punch and body lock. While keeping the body lock pivot so your hips are perpendicular to opponents. Hook their leg with your leg and twist your opponent towards his back. Easy takedown...simple to do even if your drunk. Lol

Love these videos. smart and always laugh a few times. I've gotten myself out of that death-grip, desperate headlock more than once by wrapping my legs around one of theirs to anchor them in place before trying to pull my head out. Similar to how applying an effective guillotine involves wrapping your legs around their waist, you're using much stronger core muscles than their one arm to escape from the headlock or submit with the guillotine.

Nice vid. My concern with shooting in on the street has always been that the front "has" to go on the floor (as practice on the mats), which is fine on a soft surface, but would hurt like hell on concrete. (It might even be injurious if you bang that knee on concrete the way some wrestlers do on the mats.) This also addressed the guillotine.

I agree with your preferred method of takedown being tripping. Because if you think about it it really allows you to put someone on the ground with the LEAST amount of effort making it the most efficient takedown approach. Also this is the best way to takedown someone much bigger and stronger than you because no matter how strong and big you are if you don't have balance your ass is about to meet the pavement. Of course the best trips in a real fight are those that allow you to remain standing while the attacker falls. Makes me wish I could find and learn glima which specializes in trips, throws, sweeps and reaps. Plus it has 27 hand tricks that are used as set ups by off balancing the opponent plus an unspecified amount of leg tricks that do aid in doing the same. Definitely be worth it especially since glima has beaten both the world judo and jiu-jitsu champions twice in under a minute each back in the early 1900s. It was Johannes Jossfsson the world glima king that did it.

Also do you know any good ways to go on the offensive win in control of the guillotine. Or a way to move into a better position for either a submission, strinking pothion, or rear control. I can't stand these delusional people saying that double leg or ground fighting doesn't work in streetfight. Of course it works but it depends on the scenario. If I'm corner by a wall and some big dude who has strong fast powerful punch hitting me the best soulution is double leg single leg and clinch takedown is the soulution. And these nerds will say what if they have knife or a gun? Then you shouldn't be fighting him at all. Good luck trying to punch his knife out of his hand
@AstralS7orm
@AstralS7orm 5 жыл бұрын
You don't punch the knife out, you control it (either arm pit lock, arm lock, armbar) and afterwards either break the arm or take their back or throw them. It's not exactly easy and takes a lot of mat time to be reasonably successful. Knife is the worst to defend against.

I like ground fighting, it's fun to train and I do think it's a need-to-know for those interested in rounded martial arts or defence - especially for women since the goal of a lot of these attacks obviously end up in these sorts of positions. However, to me, the big caveat of willingly fighting on the ground in a street fight is A) concrete. Even taking someone down can easily bust your own knee up. Now you can't stand or get away. And the main one: B) Unlike training (unless you train with massive douches), people in the street want to stomp on your head or smash your face onto concrete - and so do their friends. There's hopefully no broken glass or gravel or sand in your gym to cut you up and blind you (permanently). I think the potential risks for ground fighting just grow a bit more in the street. But there are always exception. I remember years ago at school I wound up on the concrete ground against a bully and his mates and, luckily, ended up guillotining the guy out to stop it before his friends got involved. I got put in isolation for 2 weeks too for defending myself 🤦🏻‍♂️

You have to be very careful with that. Even in the controlled situation of shooting the video and your "opponent" complying for the demonstration, your head/face came critically close to the ground. In a real fight, you don't have that control and all it needs is a little bit of momentum to his left and with him holding to your neck you may faceplant full force with his and your weight driving you into the concrete.
@IrelandVonVicious
@IrelandVonVicious 5 жыл бұрын
Last fight I was in went like that. Guy stuck me with head and shoulder going for the take down. I pushed my chest out as hard as I could and got lower. He never got in on me. Instead of trying to soften the hit against me or pull back on the neck I just body weighted him down to the ground. Instead of your cool move he went face first to the ground and got choked out. The counter to what your showing is not very intuitive but it works way too well. Although in your version you were a lot closer than I let him get before he took the face first dive. So to anyone who tries this, make sure you are already really close with your feet or it can go very badly.

I was always taught to keep my head held high and tight to avoid a guillotine when taking someone down. I always figured that was just standard procedure. With that being said, it all depends on how good of a guillotine your opponent has. I wouldn't want to try that with someone like Kron Gracie that is known for his guillotine chokes. As far as escaping the guillotine, I have had great success with just spinning around to my opponent's opposote side just like you did in the video, but I always keep going until my neck is completely out. However, I know one guy who has a guillotine choke that comes on so fast and hard that I usually dont even have time to tap before enduring a massive amount of pain in my neck. Totally sucks.

From my perspective, there's a lot of risk running your face toward the ground. If you can grab up his free arm, his head has a zero-cushion freefall to the asphalt, instant end to fight. I always support using the world's biggest melee weapon: the ground.. And somehow they still never see it coming xD

It's really not a very bright idea. Personally I think you should only double leg if your guillotine defense is on point. On the other hand a great way to get a great guillotine defense is to shoot double legs on everyone and learning what to do when you fall down. The way I do it I haven't been guillotined in more than a year. If you shoot with your posture up there is no guillotine to be caught on.

Man, Singles all day for the streets. I’ve had dudes Road Rage and follow me telling me to pull over and most of them just have anger Issues and no training. I Legit just wait for the wild haymakers (trust, untrained dudes always do this) and drop level on them. Have put dudes 6’0 down easy like that and I’m only 5’8. Wrestling always catches them off guard, especially when you hit them with a good boxing stance. They never see It coming until they’re up In the air lmao. Let the 1,2 fly and SHOOT If you aren’t trying to wait for the counter👍. Daniel Cormier was a beast at setting up shots with the 1,2 and It’s such a simple setup

This was basically the first lesson my old school African wrestling coach taught us. We did not appreciate his knowledge at the time but this is legit.. he called it bulling and he did a whole load of other things that ive never seen anyone else do that seem im hindsight more street applicable. I have done this and seen it done on stronger guys especially if you control the wrist attempting the headlock/ guillotine.

You see guillotine done a lot by MMA fighters with striking background. In the streets, an opponent would probably choke you from your behind, not face to face. You can bait him, but if he is an experienced grappler he will throw you down without the guillotine, if he’s not he’ll probably keep hailing haymakers.

Did something similar once. I baited the guillotine, they took it, but instead of going up with it, because they were bigger then me, I went down with my head, kicked off with my feet bringing my legs up and over both of us flipping us backwards. There head flowed by almost all of my body weight smacked the concrete ending the fight.

Double leg can end a fight before it starts. But it also sucks. It can be hard to do to really big guys. It doesn’t put you in the best spot assuming the slam doesn’t knock ‘‘em out. And if there’s a chance someone else might hit you there’s no awareness of what else might be going on from the position. Shintaro Higashi doesn’t like it much. So you might piss off wresters to dump on it but you’re in good company.

No offense, but as a Jiu-jitsu primary, I always see people bastadizing the moves. Now that I'm studying wrestling pure, I can honestly say no one actually knows any demonstrated takedown. I'm not saying that you're wrong, but knowing the actual techniques from the source solves all of the problems that people end up trying to fix.

@nonyabizness2550

Ill reply similarly. If what you meant by knee hitting is the drop step on a proper double..A: It should barely hit hard because if you do it right, your shoulder should slam thier pelvis first, the weight of thier body will slow your fall on the drop step. B: You will not feel the pain of your knee hitting...when youre jacked on adrenaline you will not feel a lil booboo on your knee.

Nonya Bizness your a smart guy man. But shit I just don't shoot my double anymore with knees. It just fucks up your whole knee. You might not feel it but next you will. But the way your describing is interesting. So you pretty much hit there pelvis first and then your knee drops. Thanks for the tip
@daxisperry7644

Thanks for the tip. I'm not worried about a skimmed knee. I'm worried about being under stress and accidentally slamming my knee into the ground and causing an injury. You're gonna get hurt in a fight, but I'd rather not help the guy do it. Interesting idea though about the pelvis slam, I'll need to try that.

@@minlee5376 I just gave a tip but in a streetfight or mma i dont think the drop step is truly necessary anyway. Wrestlers need it because wrestlers take a really low stance. Also I really dont think its necessary to shoot a dub unless your fighting a much taller opponent...which Im short so its important I know how to get someone to the ground. But then its really not necessary to drop step if they are say 8 inches plus taller...your hips are already lower. My basic strategy for street is...if they are shorter or up to about 6 inches taller...I go to plum...shoot one knee to the groin as I break the posture. Then headbutts on repeat. If they really tall...I bodylock(to defend punches) and I like the leg-hook double because it will put even a huge guy down. Once down I would go to side control put both arms on far side and 12-6 elbow the shite out of thier jaw. If its a crowded area...knee mount instead...you can fist pump from there...or run away...or stand up and stomp...or just restrain them...it becomes what you need it to be
