'Take The A Train" by Billy Strayhorn. Song (Duke Ellington's signature song), which includes written- out solo for you to learn. Explains solo techniques and improvisation concepts. Left hand rootless voicings are played throughout. Solo is taken from my book which you can view on my website: www.kenthewitt.com/

+AnEnormousBBFan There's many written out solos in my book. I've transcribed solos in my past and they are helpful. You realize...that you can buy books of solo transcriptions.... but they're only a means to an end. You need to really learn how to improvise from your own point of reference. So I should put up some more basic improv theory vids. Improvisation is definitely the most fun (and risky ) part of playing jazz. I'd like to help you get to that really fun part. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rdl0gLKYsdCniHU.html

Just perfect for my level. Full of great sounds (both harmony and rhythm), but still accessible. Give me about 90 minutes, and I'll be playing a recognizable version of this. I LOVE having this stuff spoon-fed to me. Thank you so much. By the way, the opening lick of the written solo is also the first five notes of "Robin's (Robbin's?)Nest", a cool little tune that I play on guitar.

@@KentHewittpiano88@davidgerber9317 Hi guys--A little late for the train(ing)--just revisiting this tune. I have your book too Kent! In that opening phrase I also heard Robbin's Nest (by Illinois Jacquet--had a chance to play w/ him when he was guest artist with our college jazz band). But also, I heard in that opening phrase the lyric and melody of "I took a trip on a train..." (from the tune "I Thought About You")...which I think was Kent's jazz subconscious coming up with a quote on a related train theme! (Also Kent, re your YT Screen Name--"KentHewittpiano88"--were there already 87 other KentHewittpiano's, so you had to use #88!?! 😄🎹)

Wonderful and very insightful as always Kent! Your stories and quotes keep getting better and better. Also, could not thank you enough for some of those Bill Evans lessons. Is there any chance you could please go over John Lewis' wonderful Afternoon in Paris? Perhaps in tutorial form and talk to us a little bit about some of the be-bop phrasing he uses through out the tune. It would mean a lot!

Very nice Great lesson Kent. Thank you so much. One question for you. Love the way you set up the video cam showing just the piano keys and your fingers. Wondering where exactly behind or on top of you that you place your camera or iPhone video recorder? It's so clear. I happen to also be a professional piano player. You have some amazing excellent combination of great sounding cords.

Elias, sure! My setup is very simple...I'm very low- tech. I use an (old) boom mic stand with a camera mount attached to a Canon Powershot S95. This was a real find. It's a very good compact camera, very lightweight, and actually I prefer it over our more expensive Pentax. It does all the video and audio for my tutorials. Of course the difference is the pianos: We are fortunate to have a 1905 rebuilt Mason and Hamlin Model AA Grand, a real beauty in Brazilian rosewood with the heavy antique legs. It has amazing tone. I'm not spoiled...we waited a lifetime to have a piano like this. The other piano in the "woodshed" is a little gem...a 1972 U1 Yamaha upright with a mahogany case, made in Japan. I love this piano, especially the action. We're both pianists (she-plays classical) so we have the Yamaha in a soundproof room. Thanks so much for the inquiry and compliments!

Kent Hewitt Thanks so much for your reply and good information. Even though I have been playing the piano for many years since I was a kid I have learned and still learning some new jazz techniques from your KZfaq classes. Love jazz a lot, please keep doing what your doing on KZfaq as long as possible. Your a great pianist. All the best, hope to catch one of your live shows if possible. Elias Negash

Hi Kent. Thank you so much for your solo as well, especially for the free sheets. It is very helpful for a dumb beginner. When we make our solo, - ok use frases according to the chords - but what scales do you recommend to use. Or can we use anyway scales, and if yes, do we have to change the scales on some parts of the song? your reply would be really appreciated. Thanks 😉

Also write to me if you have a specific fingering issue and I would be happy to help. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qMyeerFeprTNkoU.html Also I have a fingering exercise written out for all the major scales. It's at home and we're away on vacation and we'll be away until 5/23, I'd be happy to forward after that.

Absolutely Mesmerising. Your channel is brilliant. I've been a producer for years but just bought an upright and always wanted to play jazz. Inspiring - i wish i could have started 20 years ago and be half as good as this. Would love to hear a version without you humming over it:-), although i know it would be a pain to keep muting your vocal mic while you are giving a tutorial.....Thanks Kent!

+Bill Hassell I did realize that after I made the video. But I put Billy's name on the score on my website and included it in the description. The song has such a strong association with The Duke (probably his signature song) that I figured it was okay. (you caught me!) Thanks!

Love the down arpeggio at 10:42. Is that an upper structure? (Am over )? then chromatically back up to D?
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 4 жыл бұрын
Not really upper structure, just am arpeggio starting on the 9th and ending on a 9th the octave below and then ascending chromatically. It's built right on a D chord with the major 9th emphasized.

One question. Do you recommend writing out all your solos? (At least for reference) or that creates too much dependence?
@KentHewittpiano88
@KentHewittpiano88 8 жыл бұрын
That's a great question, like any great questions, that respond with a yes and no. I would say try to do both...in other words, try writing out some solos and learn them really well. Then as a next step try playing them, but varying some of the notes or rhythm. Then take it to the next step, and continue until you've created a whole new solo. Then try to improvise....It's a cool method, I think. I wrote out solos or transcribed them early on, then when I got better at it, I eventually was able to improvise in a more quality or intelligent manner.
