Cabe Yep, we are on cognitive basis not build for this digital communication. Even Email is to much input in too high frequency especially at work. And why changing office for a question you can „slack“. Horror. I worked for nearly 20 years in Digital Design. I‘m done. We have so much channels to communicate, we loose control and abilities. Yet even „ground“. It is eating us up and transforms our minds and souls. When I see all the narcissistic selfie stuff on insta, it is without words. We need to focus the simple things again. Just like here. A walk in the wood, grow your own vegetables and kind of this.

1st like, that is exactly what I've thought for years. I set up a facebook years ago in college, but quickly got bored with it, and also realized it's potential for overuse. I never owned a smart phone, not on facebook, never had cable and stopped watching TV in 1971. Dropped out but have lots of time for relationships, extensive gardening, art work and reading! It is an authentic life and not an "imagined" reality. Try it out folks. Go through the bored feelings when you unplug and let the creative 'inside outside" journey begin. Be creative, clean your room up, learn to cook all sorts of things, garden. Once you disconnect from collective thought, you will have your Soul back.

It used to be you generally only called people between 5 and 9 pm, any later would be rude except for emergencies and before 5 everyone was out at work, school or doing whatever they do. Exactly. People get upset at you if you don't have your phone on you because it inconveniences them. You are so right. I am 71 years old. I got my first smartphone a little over a year ago. I saw what other people were doing with Facebook and I decided I did not even want to open a Facebook account or Twitter or any of those. I am like you that I use my smartphone mostly for watching KZfaq. And I leave it at home when I go camping and fishing. A lot of people worry about this old fart off in the forest alone for two weeks with no communication. The places I enjoy camping the most are off-grid and no cell phone service anyway. I don't worry too much. I'm too old and tough for a bear to chew on. And if I die in the woods that will be the place I love most to die in any way. As for checking my emails, I have probably not even looked at my email account in the last month that I can remember. And most times when I checked it I just clicked the box at top and delete all. Many many times people will say I sent you an email you didn't answer did you not get it? I just tell them over and over I don't know I never look at my emails. So now they stopped sending. That suits me fine. Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful thoughts.

I recognized that I had a problem when I couldn't even watch a 10 minute KZfaq video without jumping over to Facebook, Instagram, or Gmail for a "quick look" while the video was playing in the background. Thank you sir, for confirming my suspicions. I'm working hard to limit social media to no more than 10 minutes total, once per day. Email is a little harder because I also use it for work, but still trying to reduce the frequency with which I check it. Finally, my KZfaq solution was quite simple. Watch all videos in full screen to reduce the distractions and force myself to focus. I feel as if my attention span is slowing coming back.

I got tired of trying to text while cooking dinner, having my phone ring 15 times while I took a shower, and then the person says, I called you 15 times? Why didn't you pick up? Instead of having the right to be annoyed at someone who can't take a hint that you're busy, you have to apologize because you have the nerve to want 5 minutes in the bathroom. Same here. I deleted FB last year and never posted a Twitter tweet. Smart phone will likely go this month to be replaced with a simple (text and phone only) phone. The TV went in 2015. That was key to me as I thought if adverts influence us to buy products, in what way are the programmes (that occur either side of the adverts) influencing us too? Values, what we think of and about and even how we think along with social behaviour, most likely. Radio will be soon. What I have left, if anything, will be my (real) life.

when I realized that I was addicted to my smartphone apps I deleted them all. three years ago, It took about 8 months before I stopped automatically glancing at my phone for alerts while I was standing in line or right when I woke up. There has never been an addictive behavior that does not become ultimately destructive. Tech titans don't let their children use them because they know that these devices have been designed to become addictive. It is the power of small dopamine hits. The carelessness of parents that I see since my revelation is really distressing to see.

I've been places where there would be two people in the same room texting each other instead of talking. It really blows my mind that this is how "far" we've come as a society. It really feels like we are devolving as a species and many don't seem to care; I have just deactivated my Facebook and only use my phone to gain information but this past year I have motivated myself to start reading actual books, so far I've read 6 books; before that I have never completed a book in my life and I'm already 21. Humans at this age were navigating across lands with just a map, a couple cans of food, a tent, and a horse and carriage. Kids knew how to hunt, fish, set traps, knew how to problem solve and get themselves out of sticky situations. We were connected to the Earth and all of life, now we are connected to a digital matrix that we call a life. Good news is that we can change this; bad news is many will be too comfortable not to. :/

I recently spent nearly a month in India back in November 2019 and I stayed in a small village and lived real authentic Indian day to day life and I had no internet signal because of how far out we were and for almost that whole month I could not use social media and it was the liberation I needed to see how addicted I actually was to my phone. I played cricket with some children on one of the farms we were staying and it was so nice to see children actually being children and then it clicked to me that I hadn't seen this in a very long time, none of these children had smartphones, video games, or access to technology they were just children and they were happier than most children/adults I see walking around the western world and these kids had nothing in terms of money only their families. Every since that technological detox I've been so much happier, sadly I need to use social media for work purposes but I've capped myself to a maximum of 2 hours a day and it's been amazing for my mental health and just general focus I've realised how much of the day to day world we miss by just having headphones on all the time or looking at our screens, social media is a great tool but it is also very much like a drug you need to be careful around it.

I came to this same realization myself just this morning. It's something I'd thought of for a really long time, but it hadn't really hit me until now. I'm always texting, looking at Facebook, or watching KZfaq. I get anxious when I don't have my phone on me. I fidget, if I don't have something to listen to (Music, audio books, podcasts, etc). I finally decided that needed to change. So I woke up early this morning, grabbed my bow -which I hadn't used in months- and I walked outside with no phone, wallet or even my shoes. I felt naked at first, but as soon as I emptied my quiver the first time, realized that I didn't miss my phone. My head felt clear for the first time in... I don't even know how long. I stayed there, loosing arrows for almost an hour before I went back inside to get ready for work. And in that time, I just sat quietly without touching my phone, completely at ease with just being. It's time to put away our new toys. It's time to start being human again.

We are too busy focused on the world, chasing dreams, fame, money, prestige, feeding pride and ego, jumping from one sin to the next that we've become disconnected to the truth(light), to the spirit, disconnected to God, and have become miserably blind to see the disaster that is coming ahead. They got social media into my head while it was still soft, I just grew up around it. Not considering something might be wrong. Now that I can measure how I spend my time, it's frightening to see just how easy it is to burn away hours on those sites. We should be using our time for other things, like tearing off the chains that bind us and cleansing ourselves of intellectual contagions. My great omission in life is the automobile. I turn 30 this summer and have never owned a car or driver's license, feels great on my wallet and my body.

Facebook started out as a way for college students to connect with each other only. However, once Facebook got big to where everyone can join Facebook and share whatever they want and got involved with it's features like look at # of friends I have, relationship status, tagging photos, and a newsfeed of negative events, that is when Facebook became more of a place that drains you not uplifts you. There was also instances of Facebook adding people on your friends list without your consent and all other inconveniences that can push people to stop using Facebook.

I had this same sad realization a few years ago. I realized that ever since digital photography and Facebook photo sharing became common my family stopped having physical photographs. The entire photo record of my life since 2009 only existed in Facebook albums, and therefore were the property of a global corporation. I noticed my home had no pictures of my fiancee and I together on the walls, all of this existed in the internet world. I immediately downloaded my data back from Facebook and deleted my account to take back my life. Our lives are ours to live, not a data mine for global corporations!
