Idk who is saying that hair stretching means you don’t like your texture. This hair care practice came from Africa and is literally practiced all over the continent for THOUSANDS of years. Stretching keeps it detangled, moisturized, slows down breakage and actually showcases the texture when worn in public

People often conflate texture with _tension._ 🤍

Right? Most of us braid or twist our hair before bed which literally stretches our hair anyway, especially after a shower. It’s actually quite inevitable for some of us 😂😂😂

I just saw a video by a black woman that stated that black hair doesn’t grow and short black hair is ugly which is why black women wear weaves and wigs. She also called herself ugly and stated that she only feels pretty with straight wigs. The stereotype that black hair doesn’t grow is NOT TRUE ! When I first went natural, I started off from a short big chop and grew my hair to mid back length. I keep my hair routine very simple and I don’t constantly manipulate my hair everyday. Length retention is very important. When you take care of your hair and don’t manipulate it everyday, it will grow.
@Tatianaclicks3 ай бұрын
Yeah unfortunately she’s projecting how she feels upon others which is sad. You seem to have an amazing hair routine and keep doing it, don’t listen to that lady!

Disagreed. Accepting the way your hair grows out of your head in its natural state is a start. Everything else is secondary.
@LifeOfHemi4 ай бұрын
Your hair grows from your roots, regardless of what hairstyle you put in (weaves, etc). The reason some people don’t see growth after protective styles is because they’re not retaining length. Their ends are breaking off at the same rate as the growth causing their hair to stay at the same length. Therefore u can grow your hair in protective styles with a proper hair care routine (& occasional trims), as long as you retain length. Coming from someone whose hair has grown tremendously with weave and a good hair care routine. Now this method may not work for you or others but it does work with the proper maintenance and care. There is no need to completely stop doing protective styles 💕
@kanyinojo834 ай бұрын
“The only thing that was in that pot was product buildup, damaged ends, and hair breakage” 🤣 I’m in my mini twist bag right now and I saw a video the other day where a girl was talking about primary and secondary (basically next level) protective styles. Primary is like your twists, braids, mini braids, mini twists etc. where you are protecting the individual strands and secondary would be protecting your protective style, so like buns in mini twists, french braid your mini braids, headwraps and scarves, etc. So you are really protecting your ends which are the oldest part of your hair. So now I’m in my secondary protective style bag and going to try to keep my mini twists (esp the ends) protected and moisturised as much as possible and not really wear them out and just free in the wind, esp for special occasions or something.

Love your channel!!!! 😍😍😍 Ditching protective styles is truly a gem I haven't wanted to accept. When I first went natural, my hair thrived because I took care of it weekly, but as I got older I got lazier and the more I did protective styles, the less tolerance I had for the maintenance of my hair and that sent me into a 3-5 year growth plateau. I'm dedicating this year to breaking that growth plateau with the help of ayurvedic herbs and despite a lot of back to back trims, I've seen so much progress since August. Keeping my hair in mini twists with no added hair and focusing on length retention and scalp care has changed the game entirely. I'm nowhere near where I want to be but it is so important to face the current state of your hair and not hide behind wigs and braids and everything else. It's a toxic way of interacting with your hair.

True, that's a valid statement that can be applied to _most_ aspects of Life! 💛 Minimizing breakage, maximizing moisture, maintaining cleanliness and O2 are all essential for the hair, plus the obvious nourishment & hydration _consumed._ Additionally, some of us don't actually use heat prior to braiding, which I already do _extremely_ infrequently (~3 times w/in the past 2 decades). *This young lady makes **_great_** points. Still, I underscore your sentiment.* ☮

Mine too....I braided my hair for 2 years straight and my hair ended up past mid back ...thick and healthy....so to each it's own. I too did not blow dry my hair straight before braiding. I did do my braids myself.....sometimes that's the difference too...some of the braiders braid too tight and we all know that's definitely damaging

Excellent video! I grow my hair by never allowing it to dry out. If it can last 5 days, I apply moisturizer on day 3. I never allow it to fully realize dryness. And I wash/hydrate regularly. Deep condition regularly. I stay alert and never ignore my hair or scalp’s condition. I’m aware of every curl at all times. I wear my hair up if I’m wearing a sweater, or if my hair will rub against the car headrest. I carry claw clips and bands in my purse so I can put my hair up when necessary. I’m quick to pull my hair up when the situation calls for it. It sounds like a lot, but it’s simple and it works. I have never used protective styles, but I’ve always been very protective of my hair. Don’t be afraid to moisturize and lift your hair up whenever you need to.

Since you don't allow your hair to dry, do you have to avoid letting your hair touch anything, all the time? No leaning back on a seat, or touching with your hands if you're working, etc. I struggle with this... I would keep a mini towel in my purse to wipe off my hands or items/shirt throughout the day. That's a lot to deal with

You dont have to blow dry or straighten your hair to have braids. If you don’t like adding hair you can just do mini twists with your natural hair they really easy to do and also easy to take down. Guys braids can be helpful but the take down process is important you are supposed to be be gentle with your hair which many people fail to do. The point of the style is to not touch your hair because if you’re not touching it how can there be breakage. You get to see the new growth at the top and see that your hair is actually growing. I think real key is just to be gentle with your hair and stop ripping through it and you can style how you want to.

I have fine 3c natural hair and the ONLY protective style my hair likes is putting two braids in (one on either side) and crossing them over my head , securing that with bobby-pins in a cute style. I only use whipped shea butter and whipped coconut oil on the lengths of my hair, Jamaican black castor oil butter on my ends, rosemary/clove oil on my scalp, and coconut oil hair grease ( I know I KNOW) on my scalp. To refresh, I spray an Amla tea I make on my scalp and hair while bringing any sebum down the lengths of my hair, reapply product and re-braid 😊 when my hair was short (like a curly bob last July) I just had to wear it out. My hair now (stretched) is at bra strap length (like where the clasps meet). Hope this helps someone!

I do the same hair style and I have thick 4a natural hair. I do two braids and Bobby pin them except I use water in a spray bottle, olive oil, and the TGIN Hair moisturizer. I only wear my natural hair down on Friday and Saturday. I wash my hair and rebraid on Sunday and it’s back to two braids. My hair went from a really short big chop to mid back length.

I love that you talked about mindset, because it all starts there. You are already setting yourself up for failure when you go about your hair thinking that it cannot grow or cannot grow past a certain length. Then when this will happen (because with that mindset it surely won't grow), it will be just you confirming to yourself that you can really not achieve long healthy good-looking hair, so you go back to hiding it permanently. The work really is here, and I am glad you started it. Shifting the minds of women with textured hair so that they can make their choices as it relates to their hair from a place of knowledge and liberty. Because right now most of our sisters are bound, in their minds, thus limited. Much love to your work❤videos like these help us who don't necessarily don't have a larger platform amplify the truth.

Same here and it’s not the fault of my braider. The last time was just different, when I took the braids out It seemed like the hair had been heat damaged but I only banded it as usual to stretch it. They were jsut heavy this time around and I only left it in for week and a half thank god it wasn’t longer or my hair would have been in worst condition. It’s gotten thicker now and it’s in a good place don’t want to ruin that.

Please can you do more videos on the power of the mind and reprogramming your thoughts with tools such as affirmations and subliminals. Finally all these wigs and braids companies make $$$$ off of black women insecurities of their hair so we need to wake up! They pau people to bring in trends like so called protective styles and relaxers or texturisers to make money from us! Just to add to this video, ladies pre poo your hair!!! This has helped making my wash days so much easier. You can use an oil like Jamaican black castor oil such a game changer!! Be sure to moisturize your ends because that is the oldest part of your hair which is prone to breakage. Also, I was thinking about braiding my hair for the summer but I realized my hair is more voluminous in the summertime (probably because of the heat and humidity) and I absolutely adore it so I definitely won't be braiding it anymore lol 😅 but ladies just remember you have to be patient with your natural hair and I promise you will slowly but surely fall in love with it!! 🫶🏾❤️

I think braids and other protective styles can aid in retention as long as you prep correctly and go to a stylist that actually cares about you’re hair. As long as you properly hydrate and moisturize your hair before braids you should be ok to keep the style in for 3-4 weeks. The biggest issue I see with black women and hair retention is dehydrated hair and lack of nutrients we don’t wash our hair enough and we don’t properly nourish our bodies with the nutrients needed to keep our hair in a healthy state. It all starts from the inside out. The only thing that can properly hydrate you’re hair is WATER whatever you use to keep that hydration in is up to you but going a week to months without washing is a big reason why we struggle with hair growth we prioritize style over health you’re hair needs to wall cleansed at least twice a week. Also nourish you’re bodies with foods with good fatty proteins, fresh fish, nuts seeds fruits and veggies will have you’re hair and nails growing like a weed. We don’t take care of ourselves and wonder why we struggle with hair growth

I agree with most of what you’re saying but of course it depends on the person for example I actually do not have to blow dry my hair before getting braids so maybe I’m just lucky in that way. My favorite thing you said was about the mindset you have around your hair. I absolutely LOVE my natural hair and I do not do a lot to it and yet it continues to grow and is healthy. So loving my hair, drinking water and leaving it alone are the cheat codes

Facts with the box braids. I feel like if ur gonna get box braids, keep it in for a month only. Because I find that the hair literally starts to break when it’s in longer. Especially for the girls with thinner hair like me. And about the hair stretching thing being self hate I think that’s BS. I’m pretty sure all natural girls braid or twist their hair after a shower and before bed mostly which causes our hair to stretch. And we don’t do this on purpose it’s simply low maintenance protective styling. Our hair is gonna stretch because we braid and twist our hair a lot even just to wear as styles.

One thing I will say on braids… or protective styles to those who have had growth results! Be careful you don’t become a slave to this way of wearing your hair.. hiding your hair and manifesting more breakage because you are scared of wearing your hair as you think it will break off when you wear it without covering it. I see a lot of people in natural hair community who never wear their hair out this becomes a big problem as you program your mind in the wrong way: your hair is extremely resilient with the right care and attention.. you don’t need to cover it or hide it to get it very very long

I recently started wearing weaves and ive retained so much growth, it's how you do it, personally braids have never been good on my hair, i used to do mini braids and twists, i love tha ability to access my hair and pamper it every weekend but the country i live in is soooooo dry so when i go out the moisture is sucked out despite using humectants, weaves act like a cloth or cover over my cornrows underneath, the results i got were shocking so protective styles are not protecting because of the things we do before, during and after the style, master healthy habits and they'll grow out your hair and also figuring out which one your hair agrees with.

Hair is always growing (or at least during the anagen phase, which differs for everybody). Unless you have a health condition of course. I think your problem may be that you aren't retaining the length, so addressing why it's breaking off could help (friction due to rubbing on clothes, so dry to the point it's breaking off, split ends, lack of protein, too much protein, etc).
