Telling no lies!! Natural hair is NOT “too much” or “too expensive.” When I tell you, the natural hair products sold at dollar general and family dollar have done more for my hair than the expensive mainstream products! I personally love taking care of my hair. I love weekly wash days. It’s all part of my self care routine. Health is wealth: physically, emotionally, & mentally

Exactly! Wearing a wig or extensions is more expensive because you have to take care of your actual hair, too. You need products for the fake hair and your own hair.

I love the idea that my natural hair costs a little to take care of. Premium products for premium hair, like a really expensive car that is rare. It’s investing in myself and some of the products that are at the lower price points have bad ingredients for your health. I’m all for good ingredients over price or making my own products in the kitchen which comes out way cheaper but the time is worth it. It’s all mindset over anything with our hair

I wear my Afro everyday. I don’t even try to make my curls pop. I just pick it out big like I’m in the Jackson 5, and let me tell you how I get compliments from men and women every single day. African people, Caribbean people, Portuguese, Ukrainian, Indian. The most shocking time was when I was in Vancouver and a Chinese-Canadian guy complimented my hair. Y’all it’s a scam! Our hair is not ugly! It’s different! And once we learn that, and mix in our black girl magic with our new found love of natural hair we will shine in a way that no one else in the world can. Period!

One thing I have learned is that everything in life requires maintenance. Whether it be your hair, skin, career, education, car, etc. If you want to keep your things together and flourishing you have to put in that work to maintain it. There's literally no other way. If you want to get/stay in shape, you have to workout and eat right. If you want your skin to flourish, you need some type of skin care routine ( no matter how simple or complex). If you want a degree, you have to go to school, study, and pass tests. It's the same with your hair. If you want your natural hair to flourish, you have to figure out a routine that works for you and do that to maintain or grow your hair. It is what it is. If you want it, you have to put in that work. You won't ever regret making yourself look beautiful with your own natural hair. It will make you feel proud and confident in your own skin. There's nothing like that feeling.

A couple of weeks ago, my sister in law complimented my hair. I have long healthy natural hair. She kept talking about how long and curly it was. I have tighter curls and my hair type is 4a but it appears looser now that it’s longer. My sister in law who has 4c hair said that her hair was very dry and it’s difficult to deal with. I told her no it’s not difficult to deal with, you just need to moisturize and take care of your hair. She asked me how I took care of my hair and I told her my hair routine and products. I wash and condition once a week, detangle, and braid it into 4 braids. I take it down after 5 days and wear it down for two days before rebraiding it on wash day. I also let her know that products don’t make your hair grow. It’s having a consistent routine that helps you grow healthy hair. I also showed her natural hair KZfaqrs I follow on KZfaq which helped me learn how to take care of my hair. She told me it’s “ too much work “. My sister in law spends HOURS installing her weave, blow drying and straightening her hair, and braiding her hair with extensions like box braids but taking care of her natural hair is “too much work.” I don’t understand why so many black women think this way. I’m also tired of the self deprecating videos on Tiktok.

I especially love the point about weaves and wigs being high maintenance. It clicked for me a few years ago, i realised i was spending so much time trying to make my wig look real instead of just investing in my hair. I feel free and confident with my natural beauty. I walk proud with my natural hair and even shaved my hair off last year just because. Fortunately I've had more positive experience with people regarding my hair because of its thickness. I have enough hair for three people 😅 it's a lot. Thickness plays a part in how natural hair is received regardless of length i can attest to this.

Okayyyyy sis your first paragraph is what I’ve always said about weaves and wigs like I’m spending all this time to make it “ look natural” and it’s like why not spend this time working with the hair that’s on my head, it won’t look real because it’s not simply put. Not gonna like at times I will get braids but I don’t even want that anymore too frequently, but to each is own.

Im Nigerian and i started growing my hair out about 3 years ago. Currently my hair is 10 inches long. My hair has always been natural. Though i was blessed with full hair😅 Even at 4-5 inches long i was getting compliments left and right about my hair. Currently my hair is at 10 inches shoulder length. Its not only in the western countries alone. Even here in Nigeria, the non textured weave industry has completely made us forget about the beauty of our own hair. A lot of women end up resorting to relaxing their hair to make it "easier to deal with". The highest epitome of hair beauty here is if you have the money to buy a wig. Its freaking nuts. I agree, i was blessed with very soft hair, so i can go weeks and even months without putting it in a protective style as long as I care for it diligently. By the way, I've never worn a wig. Never liked them and never had the need for them😂 Thanks for the video💙

We get mad because having to assimilate for centuries (and for some of us even now), and having other groups outright disrespect our hair and our cultural hairstyles, has changed the way we've valued our hair. If people say it's ugly, and/or nappy, they need to keep the same energy and NOT WEAR IT! If some of us are still in areas where it's unprofessional to wear our natural hair, or we can't further our education because of it, then why should others be able to wear it like it's a fun costume, and not deal with the consequences?! Those are valid reasons to be upset.

You are right, I was born in a rural area in Congo, and nobody ever wore wigs. We never cared about products to grow our hair because we knew hair grew by itself. I remember the first time I saw women with wings on their heads, and it was disgusting. It never matches their skin colour and bodies. I never knew people hated their hair texture until I moved abroad two years ago. That's when I started using my own phone, and every time I opened KZfaq, there were always videos about loving your hair and taking care of it. I was surprised by that until I learned about the story behind black people in the US, but then I remembered that they were free now and they didn't need to use chemicals or buy wings. I love to wear my afro, and I am just 17, I wish many black women and men loved their own hair.

Exactly!!! Im tired of the wig/lace front excuses. I used to wear wigs when it was the norm to not glue it. At most, we used got2b glue so it was easy to take off and wear my natural hair. But once it started to become a more “permanent” thing with stronger glue, I tried and it burned me and took my edges in like 3 days. That was the last time. I’ve been natural for over 10 years and wear it 99% of the time. I get most of my compliments and privilege when I’m wearing my natural hair from all races and genders. Im at the point where I feel ugly when my hair isn’t out in some form 😂😂 I hate that when I get on social media or go outside, I don’t see more people that “look like me”. & it’s not like my hair is a unique feature. I have type 4 hair so most black people grow this from their scalp and choose not to wear it. Amazing. I love this video and it’s very well put together but, just a suggestion, maybe try including more photos/references of black women with short afros or TWA as most people like to call it. Just being realistic, but most black women who frequent wigs/weaves often ignore and neglect their real hair, like how you spoke in this video. Thus, causing their hair to maybe not be the longest and thats okay. Small afros are cute and exhilarate so much confidence on a person. I think its extremely important to show lots of examples of this and give options and advice on how to wear afros of that size, especially when the unhealthy obsession with length is so extreme within the natural hair community (or just the black hair community in general). Suggestions like braid-outs, twist-outs, stretching the hair overall is good at times but honestly supports that unhealthy obsession. Learning to embrace shrinkage and promote wearing styles that don’t require stretching, or just wearing a shrunken afro can be so beneficial and destroys the unhealthy obsession with length!

I wore sew ins for many years before I decided to give them up in 2017. I can honestly say the up keep of my natural hair is so much easier. I’ve grown to truly love the process. I only use a total of 5 products to wash/moisturize my hair and I own 1 comb that I use for detangling. Many women I believe are afraid to obtain new skills needed for natural hair. I can say my routine can be tedious since I mostly wear 2 strand twist but when it’s done I’m good for a few weeks.

Yessss, I wish someone would explain this to my mother! If I don’t want to wear a weave or a wig for pictures, then that’s my choice. I love my afro and my natural hair. My hair is so super thick that I get told people wish they had this type of thickness. It's not for the weak! Especially since I cut it down, it forms its own curls and everything. Most of the time, though, I just like it combed out.

I love when you make these videos. I’ve been thinking about getting rid of my wigs completely. On a regular basis I wear my hair in mini twists and braids because where I live is super humid, but when I wanna change it up I do twist outs. Our hair is so beautiful and I wish more women could tap into that and learn to love themselves. p.s. I have the same hair texture as you 😁

One time on fb, I saw a short clip of a movie, talking about our hair texture. The teacher is white and has straight hair so she told the child to make her hair "neat" just for picture day. I was like no. We could style our hair neat with our natural curls, there are different ways not just blatantly straighten the hair. Our hair is sensitive to heat and it breaks easily. I love to see girls with natural hair whether short or long it is better than for them to cover their beautiful mane all in the name of 'Insecurity.'
@Sparkle-ey7iw
@Sparkle-ey7iw Ай бұрын
Our hair isn’t necessarily sensitive to heat. It’s how the heat is used. Some naturals were able to retain more length by wearing natural blow dry only styles or flat ironing at lower temperatures. It prevents breaking from single strand knots

I see your point. I have been natural my whole life. I am a 90’s baby and I dealt with bullying and being one of the few natural in elementary school. I did not wear wigs until I was 20 years old. My first wig was a natural hair wig. However, I maintained more hair growth with wigs then when I wore my natural hair in two strand twists in middle school and high school and occasionally braid extensions. I agree that wigs can be very high maintenance just like natural hair. In my case, I started wearing straight wigs at 21 and wear wigs a lot of the time now at 28. I do wear my natural hair occasionally, but not as often as I use to. I do think that wigs can be low maintenance if you wear synthetic wigs or wearing full wigs that you can just put on and go. However, I do plan to wear my natural hair more because I feel it has unfortunately made me feel that the straight wigs/wavy wigs look better than my natural hair. I also think it has caused some breakage in the front of my hair, so I plan to wear wigs less often the rest of 2024.

I decided to take a small break from braided extensions cus I wanted to let my hair breathe for a bit and honestly I look way better like this. I put my natural hair in mini twists and istg it suits my face much more than extensions I usually get, although I'm gonna put them in one last time because my mum already bought them for me and they ain't cheap but this is probably the last time I'll ever wear them since I'm going to loc my hair up this summer hopefully 🩷

This might sound stupid, but watching Cyber Chase as a kid made me fall in love with natural hair. (There’s a woman with natural hair; she’s a real person and not a cartoon, and pops in a lot of episodes.) I didn’t know my hair could also look like that because my mom always permed our hair and didn’t know how to do her own natural hair nd said it was too difficult. She didn’t let me go natural because she said it was too much work, but now that I’m an adult, I’m learning little by little how to care for and fully love my natural hair, and it’s honestly so freeing. There’s so much propaganda I didn’t even realize I’d absorbed until going through my natural hair journey.

I stopped adding hair to my head to extend my hair a few months ago. It was definitely a HUGE thing for me, but I was so fed up with feeling like I needed to add hair to my head to appear feminine. I was never taught how to take care of my hair or do my own hair, but I started watching a TON of natural hair videos. Then I decided that I would start with mini twists since they are simple and easy (they do take a ton of time though) and my hair can easily remoisturized until my next wash day. The first time SUCKED, it was bad. The second time, ok ok we doing something now. And the third time I feel that I have a handle on it now. Ever since, I've realized that I'm getting more attention from the people around me. People stop and stare. It could also be that my face is more on the androgenous side, so maybe they are confused about my gender? 😭 Regardless, I went to my brother's graduation the other day, and this one guy couldn't keep his eyes off of me 😂 I went to the store today and a lady stopped and told me that she really liked my hair. THAT HAS NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE. It really gave me confidence to keep going. If anyone is interested, I do get major shrinkage. My hair in a wet stretched state reaches the crease between my breasts / mid armpit length, but my hair shrinks all the way to my ears and further depending on where the hair is on my head. And I wear it JUST LIKE THAT. My hair is shiny and beautiful and HEALTHY. I do wish it didn't shrink that much, but it what it is. Right now my goal is length retention so I'll see how it goes. Wish me luck!

She's not lying. People stare at me like some beautiful alien when the see my and my hair. There was this Asian couple that would come to my job they would always smile and stare. Then one day I noticed she was looking back at me more than usual, I noticed she had got a curly perm to get her hair curly like mine so I assume that's why her and her husband would stare all the time. Well the next time I saw her she wasn't staring and smiling because her hair was damaged and falling out... I've had men literally ge on their knees and bow down to me lol. Just s few days ago at work this man kept telling me how beautiful my hair is, he noticed his wife was bothered and he turned to her and said dont worry your hair is pretty too. She had bleach blonde straight hair that looked like she had a braid out. Well of course she tried to tell me that my small (3c) curls can't be real. Well I told her I'm black so yeah it can. Long story short them men got on to her at the table and even talked shit about her for the rest of the time. You get the most feminine treatment as a natural, even white women get put in their place by their own men when you come around!
