The art of effective, purposeful acceleration will transform your riding. The difference between being able to make swift progress when it's needed, deal with short sharp changes in speed and being comfortable the forces involve without holding onto the bars and not having that skillset, is huge.
You'll find hill climbs, and almost every other explosive technical skill will improve. So to will your gravel road riding, your general speed and your ability to get around acceleration bumps. It's a skill that many overlook in their riding too. Build the movement patterns, turn the gas and enjoy how fast you can really go and how pro it makes you look!

That was a great video. When I began to learn it I too was not getting far enough forward. I discovered a video that really made it click when he said it should feel like the bike is pushing you forward as a opposed to hanging on. When I finally got forward enough it felt effortless with zero strain on my grip. A true turning on of the proverbial lightbulb. I still get caught on occasion because I fail to move forward soon enough prior to the crack of the throttle. Yours is one of my favorite instructional channels. You have a talent for breaking complicated things into very understandable chunks. Thanks.

Another awesome session. I love Lucy's honesty and willingness to try things and trust you :-). You have explained it so well and your videos especially side shots very nicely demonstrate how this should be done. Very well done and very professional.

On the broader topic of moving about on the bike (counter-balance etc), its amazing how moving your body position helps your riding. Equally amazing is the difference between you thinking you're moving about vs how much youre actually moving about

I love the idea that the skill is more about acceleration and making the most of the acceleration you need in a given circumstance rather than all out speed which is less often required anyway. Point to point, and getting there quickly and efficiently is key. Thanks so much for h for this video…acceleration has always been a challenge for me to do well! One of things I have had a challenge with is shifting while accelerating hard! I will need to watch look back a5 your videos and see if you have covered that aspect?

Nice video! Weirdly I just watched one from MXFactory that was tackling the same topic - they had a drill which was to practice accelerating one-handed. Obviously it can be a bit riskier, but it does guarantee that you're using only body position to counteract the acceleration, because you can't make up for it by gripping the bars if your hand isn't on them!

Nice! Tyler makes some great videos! One handed riding is in our videos that are coming in the future and I think he's a 1000% right about it. It works really well as a drill. 😊

I feel this is even a good exercise on a street bike. I found myself doing it accelerating from 40-65mph on country roads to get used to passing or just being more maneuverable on the road

One thing, you say you are not asked to speed but speed is relative and when you twist the throttle you're speeding compared to otherwise. I can understand the hesitation in following what you said to her, because you're just giving a snap shot of what's to be done but ignoring the before and after aspects of it.

Herein lies a problem with passengers on the back of a bike. We are doing a chin-up pulling on the handlebars when we accelerate. The passenger flips backward and then does a sit-up trying to get back on the bike. So, passengers should be holding on to the rider, so they can "pull" on the rider to stay on the bike when accelerating and to "push" on him when stopping. Our body should be their handlebars. I like jackets with waist belts for this purpose. (A backrest is also recommended.)
