In this Shelfside Review, we review Takenoko, a wonderfully cute game in a Japanese bamboo garden with a panda running around. Everyone assumes the role of managers of the garden, moving the gardener, rolling the weather die, and placing plots to move towards their goals. Its labeled as a family game, but has deep strategic depth with the objective card deck, with the mechanics of action points, dice rolling, and tile placement.
Takenoko is a popular game and has even won the 2012 Golden Geek Award from board game geek, but we wanted to delve on why its not as popular as it can be, with its incongruence on how it is versus how it displays itself. It's a family game, but is really tricky for newcomers to get a hang of because of there being an unclear direction players don't understand the objective decks. The objective decks of plots, panda, and gardener should get memorized for mindgame potential, so newcomers are left to just casually meander around a bamboo garden without knowledge of the decks. We had to cover this game because there has always been a weird divide on the game, where some people love it to death, and others dismiss it in both the categories of strategy and family.
Is Takenoko the right family game or medium-light game for your gaming group? Watch through this fertile review!

I watch a ton of board game reviewers and you guys have shot to top of my list. I've been binging all your videos. You guys have a great since of editing, humor, and most importantly transparency when it comes to scoring. The recommender's score vs personal score is an excellent way for people to know whether the game is for them. I often have a hard time discerning whether reviewers personal taste's (which everyone has) is inflating/deflating the score they give. But your system is perfect. Although I personally adore the theme and gameplay , your review made me realize that it's a bit too deep for my casual gamer friends but might get passed for heavier games with my core group. Thank you for the review

Yoooo thanks for the comment! The system took some time to work out so I'm glad that you appreciate it lol. It's basically an amalgamation of a bunch of different reviewing systems I've seen across youtube from all sorts of mediums like video games, nerf guns, anime, and whatever the hell else I've been watching haha -Daniel

Nice review! Takenoko has been one of my favorite games to play; I never get tired of pulling it out! The only issue I’ve had is I’ve noticed that if you try to end the game early panda objectives can be really easy to get quickly.

This review made me super excited about Takenoko. Def gonna check it out on BGA. Seems like there is a Big Box edition coming this year.

I bought this game and currently have it on my cull list, unplayed. SUSD has this game as their “nopener”. Now you come out with this video. Now what do I do.
