FYI: Here a great tip to quickly help you bring back the shiny white of the ivory keys, that i have been using for years when i’m servicing pianos or my personal pianos. For stained white keys use 40 volume hair developer and paint it on the white keys, wrapping them with clear plastic wrap then let them sit for a day. It acts as a tooth whitener for all keys, especially ivory ones. It's important to note that these keys are real ivory. Ivory is porous much like unfinished wood. This product and the main ingredient is hydrogen peroxide, so it makes perfect sense that this works so well. Many years i had a customer that used toothpaste with great results, just make sure the toothpaste has hydrogen peroxide in it and u may have to leave it on longer like 3days to a week to be successful because of the lower volume of hydrogen peroxide.

This series is amazing. I spent years playing the piano, but never got to play a grand. The innerworkings are fascinating. Thanks for sharing!

Tomy , You should try too use gel gloss or semi chrome polish on the ivory keys, When I helped restore a very old piano that’s what the Tech used it worked Amazing The ivory came out looking brand new it took out heavy black staining etc. Great vid I can’t wait to see the finished piano & hopefully your wife playing it. Thank you Sir..

That looks like so much fun! What a beautiful and well kept piano. You are lucky to have found it. Hoping you get the rosewood I sent you (if the post office doesn't loose it). Let me know and keep us all updated as you progress through this fascinating and complicated restoration.

When I take things apart it usually involves a reciprocating saw. Hmm, maybe that's why they don't go back together so well. Love this series. I reconditioned a piano when I was about 19 years old. Back when your piano was first made. LOL I didn't do much more than tinker around, but it was a great experience. Cheers.

I believe it's July 2, 1874. Europe reads them opposite of the US and Broadwood was made in London.

Watch out ! those green felts can contain arsenic. the year 1874 would be right- I have almost the same John Broadwood piano built in 1869 mine has markings indicating which tech built each part of the piano.

Wonderful ! Takes lots of patience and dedication to clean up all those parts it's quite laborious but it pays off very nicely ! I was wondering if Semi chrome cream would be more efficient on your white keys ?

I am a piano restorer and should you do this again I suggest you use Flitz metal polish on the key pins. Unless the finish has corroded off the pins, flitz will remove all the accumulated dirt and minor oxidation leaving the pin smooth like new. It's a big reduction in friction. Nicely done.

I heard you can get the yellow out with hydrogen peroxide & ultraviolet light. I would get educated on it before trying, but something to look into.

There's no reason to wax the pins...IMO... What is your goal there?
@HovingtonInstruments
@HovingtonInstruments Жыл бұрын
The material inside the keys is quite sticky and wasn’t able to find suitable replacement. I knew that wax does wonders on old vintage wooden drawers. Gave it a try and worked great 👍

@@HovingtonInstruments If you mean the balance pins were binding/sticking to the key bushing material, well, ok...that would be a reasonable kludge fix I guess ;-) Better than increasing the opening and having a loose key. But there's certainly no need for the keys to easily _slide_ along the pins. I'd prefer the opposite in fact. Well...as long as it worked out ok in the end. A minor point.
