Good video restoration without shop full of expensive tools. Only additions is to remove rust from deep pits is old Naval Jelly and let rest for a while. The original formula left a rust resistant coating. The darkened patina I prefer over shiny. The dark patina was well earned by the knife. Shiny is merely user vanity. After removing rust jelly residue I wash blade in hot soapy water and super dry with hot hair dryer blower. When cool then sharpen to keen. I then properly measure out a small bit of two part epoxy and apply a thin coating to the now clean and dark blade. I use food measuring spoons for precise measuring of small quantities. The epoxy is a long term protection for the blade on normal use. The protected blade now looks and functions as a sharp old veteran.

This knife design was what introduced me to your knives. It was an awesome blade, but I gave it to my dad. Great instructional video.

do not let it get rusty to start with, be vigilant, coat it with a smear of tallow, I have some knifes from the 1820,'s and they are still good. and I use them.

If I'm already seeing some brown rust spots on my carbon steel Mora blade, is it too late to force a patina on there, or will it help keep it from rusting further?

I have knives that are 40 years old. They are so dark with patina that they do not rust. More patina you have less the food oxides. Basically maintenance free.

Works great for me. I use wd40 and rub it with 0000 steel wool, wipe, apply wd40 and repeat the process until you are satisfied. Kind of mashing both steps into one... but I restore/customize knives for a living and most of my work is a lot more rusty than the knife in the vid. Thanks for the info though, and I can attest to the methods shown... they work great, and this is exactly where I usually start when a customer sends me a knife, and while cheaper than most, I still charge a pretty penny!

What you call rust I call discoloration natural to high carbon steel blades, but I'm new to knife collecting. I also use a tootbrush (Nylon brushes) to get vinegar and liquid dish soap into the 'pits' in the blade.

It rusts under a coating because there is already rust under the coating. Rust is a bitch, not to mention different metals have different times they can be open before coating them, and not having the possibility of corrosion starting. Some metals u have to almost sand as u coat because the time is so short.
