My sister and I just sold our family home. About 69 years ago our grandfather propagated a rhododendron and planted it in the yard. We watched your video to learn how to take cuttings, root hormone, plant and try and grow them!!! We probably have about 20 of them. Now we’ll keep our fingers crossed 🤞 and hopefully they’ll grow!! Thank you for sharing your experience and expertise!! 🌱

Hi Mike, I just wanted to thank you for your great advice. I'm a complete rookie gardener in the UK and I watched some of your videos last Autumn. I've managed to get lots of cuttings to grow by following your videos. I'm especially pleased to have got a couple of rhododendron cuttings from my late father-in-law's garden to take. It means a lot to my wife as it will remind her of her dad. Thank you for that! Phil

Here in W. Oregon those grow wild at about 3,000 ft elevation. We were picking hedgehog mushrooms deep in a thick patch of Rhodys that are nearly impossible to move through. We ran right into a bear eating the same mushrooms less than ten feet away. That thing started grunting at us like a pig and clicking its teeth. It then ran several tight circles around us. It ran through what we could barely crawl through like nothing. Thankfully it left, so did we. Your vids always bring that memory back lol.

Took your advise with respect to perlite as cuttings compost and SUCCESS. First time I've been able to propagate Daphne. Semi-ripe with a heel. BTW this one is Darjeeling and as the name suggests would love the PNW. V highly scented. Am now looking at getting a large white/pink rhodi to plant behind my large red one (I think Taurus or similar)and was looking at Polar Bear, but then Loderi King George stole my heart, WOW! I see that a local nursery has it. I like your enthusiasm.

Have most every rhododendron you did cuttings of in this video. Been growing rhodies for 45 years. Haha, maybe it all comes down to a simple bribe, hahaha. If you're pruning heavily, then do that in the winter, while the plants are dormant. If you just want to do a light trim, then the spring is best, just after blooming. That way it will still set blooms for the following year.

I'm so glad that you are making propagation videos again. You inspire so many people to try propagating just about anything. Several weeks ago I told you about the red leafed 'Midnight Marvel' hibiscus shoot that I had inadvertently broken off when planting. I had removed all leaves including the buds I left only the top 2 leaves and stuck it into the pot but the shoot didn't survive. Well "hold the phone", yesterday I was watering and noticed that there were little tiny sprouts on it! This has definitely taught me something about being patient and waiting longer before giving up on a cutting. We have finally cooled down a little here and are getting rain so I think I'll plant the 2 large hibiscus plants out into my landscape. Although I'm temped to dig that shoot to see how many roots it has ...I won't. I just love the rhododendrons you have in your landscape ...so beautiful!

Hi "gun man"...where I live , a mike kincade, is a name out of a cowboy movie. I am very c oncern about this plants cuttins, becouse I'll do it now they already bloomed. I have been 100 % succesfull with ground layerings but it's very limited So .. It's hard to see if yo cut only this year growth or just young wood with a little of "last year's wood"... Is it just green , not so tender wood?? If I don't do it now, i autumn I'll have not a cold weather, but enough to avoid rooting, and humidity up to 95%. With monster funguses working hard. So. Green bark , last new growth? Thanyou mike, you're so inspirational and supportive 😊😊

For rhododendrons, I prefer the outdoor frame with the bottom heat. I did use totes for them when I first started but had little success. If I were to use totes again then I would start them indoors now under lights and probably leave the lid cracked to allow air flow but occasionally mist the leaves.

Mike, where did you get the green sharpening tool that you are using at the beginning of this video? My husband messed up a pair of great old shears that we inherited from his father by sharpening the heck out of them with a tool that didn't even sharpen them in the right place but over sharpened the blades with a grinder, that there is a little space now that was created between the blades and I can't use them anymore. I got a new Corona Shears and I want to buy this tool to sharpen them myself when I need it. I really loved the old shears, they do not make them as strong. None of them on the market compare to it but the corona will do. Thanks!

The cuttings should be of new, current season's growth. Take the cuttings in August or September and put them in a frame outdoors on bottom heat through the first winter. I use finely ground fir tree bark for a medium. They root slowly and I don't up-pot mine for 1.5 years from the time I take the cuttings. Has to be on current season's new wood. I took them from the bottom for several reasons. 1) I like to prune my rhododendrons like trees so it makes sense to take cuttings from the sides and bottom. 2) The best cuttings come from growth that isn't at the top because it isn't as thick and robust and there are less flower buds on the lower cuttings. 3) The plant is too tall to take the top cuttings, lol.
