This world record has stood for over 100 years and Beaumont had his eyes firmly set on it. He was supported by a team of riders who he would use for drafting. Mark clearly gave it his all, even collapsing after the finish! Was this enough to land him the world record? Watch the full video to find out...

I'm actually kind of glad to see this. The early era cyclists deserve a lot more respect than they get. Yes everyone will say they were tough, but hey they were properly fast too! And they didn't have clipless pedals or skin suits either.
@WildOutdoorLiving
@WildOutdoorLiving 6 жыл бұрын
Likely an early iteration of toe clips, leather shoes, and what can best be described as a woolen suit. (can't say exactly what this particular record holder wore as I have yet to find any detailed report, but this was the typical cycle clothing of the time.)

I think cycling was more popular back then, so it meant a bigger pool of extraordinarily talented people who would compete in other sports these days were cycling instead.
@T33K3SS3LCH3N
@T33K3SS3LCH3N 5 жыл бұрын
Brain Mind European and world population was WAY lower though. The larger percentage of cyclists probably easily balances out to a similar total because of that.
@brainmind4070
@brainmind4070 5 жыл бұрын
T33K3SS3LCH3N Maybe, but since the industrial revolution, life has also become progressively less physically demanding, so it's possible genetic traits that correlate with athleticism aren't necessarily selected for as rigorously either in survival or procreation.
@ericferguson68
@ericferguson68 5 жыл бұрын
Brain Mind: Stop with the silly Darwinism already (most everybody got laid in the 1880's and most everybody gets laid today). The pool of elite athletes is larger today because there are far more people alive, and childhood nutrition is far better now. Almost everyone grows to be big and strong. Most people don't get fat and slothful until they get older. The reason they couldn't set the record is most likely that they don't know the proper riding technique for a penny farthing. The 19th century riders spent thousands of hours training on these bikes. These guys probably spent a few days or weeks: Their technique is probably not as efficient as it could be.

Great video but having previously heard Graeme Obree speak about his two x hour-record attempts in 24hrs, and seeing how chinstrapped a quality rider like Mark is after just one, makes you appreciate what an unbelievable rider and hard man Obree was. Penny farthings - for when fixies aren't hipster enough #Vintage
@HopperDragon
@HopperDragon 6 жыл бұрын
Except all the pro track racers use fixed gear bikes. I don't get this whole "fixies are hipster" thing. They're objectively faster.
@rays5163
@rays5163 6 жыл бұрын
Does having a fixed gear allow you to break the laws of physic? Because because otherwise there's no way fixed gear is faster than having multiple gears. Lighter maybe but having a fixed gear basically limits your gear ratio to whatever size your wheel is and having a system of gears is only limited by the human pedaling.
@HopperDragon
@HopperDragon 6 жыл бұрын
Ray S Most fixed gear bikes have a really large ratio. And this isn't an argument that needs to be had when Google exists, all the biking speed records are set by fixed gear cycles.
@rays5163
@rays5163 6 жыл бұрын
Yes i know you can just look at thagt but what you fail to realize is with a set of gears your ratio can literally be infinite.
@HopperDragon
@HopperDragon 6 жыл бұрын
Ray S That is not true. Your ratio will always ultimately be limited by the size of the wheel, so the fixed and geared bikes with the same wheel size have the same highest possible ratio. And from Wikipedia, "a fixed gear drivetrain is more mechanically efficient than any other bicycle drivetrain, with the most direct power transfer from rider to the wheels. Thus, a fixed gear requires less energy in any given gear to move than a geared bike in the same gear."

+Ryan Zapotocny That would be fair to the record holder, but then again with speed records on modern TT bikes they use any advantage they can possibly get. And it seemed Mark used clipless pedals there. Nevertheless I still want to see how fast one can go on a really high tech version of it, they could do that separately from the real record attempt.

As a kid I learned to ride an original 1880 Columbia, all period iron steel and heavier than hell. And the first rides were on an authentic 19th Century road surface... a cow path! Only the one step in back though, and it took a while before I realized I could just step back on it to dismount instead of taking the rather tall side exit... made life a lot easier on the legs! It was a lot of fun riding around town from up high. Though seeing what modern penny farthings are like, I would like to see a full carbon one made -- a 21st Century version of the classic ride with a fraction of the weight of an original.

Type 2 fun. Fantastic. Well done. Very easy to underestimate the victorians, those guys were utterly insane and no shame at all in being a few seconds off.

excellent video!!! Obree on a penny farthing for an hour would be brilliant! heck it about sets up perfectly for his old faithful position. Shame Mark didn't beat the record - even bigger shame that Si didn't get to ride!

This is terrific. Those bikes look like doing a rotational face-plant would be easy to do. And what a crash that would be.
