Taking cuttings of perennials and shrubs will ensure you have replacements for tender varieties and is a super cheap method to make new plants for gifting or for your own garden.
In this video I show you how to propagate Salvia Amistad and Salvia Icing Sugar by taking cuttings and growing on under protection through the winter months.

Salvia Caradonna is so easy. June 1st I broke off a stem, only pulled off the leaves that were going underground. Shoved it in the ground and watered it for 3 days and then 2 times a week. 5 weeks later it has growth coming up from the ground. Zone 6A. The stem was pretty tender, not woody at all.

Wow! How fantastic. I bought some tiny plug plants of caradonna earlier this year and they all died!!! 😕

Thank you so much Be, that's wonderful news. I'm really glad to be able to share my garden and any tips that I've learnt. I hope you can find Icing Sugar - it's beautiful and one of the few salvias that made it through our big freeze this winter - I lost all my Amistad ☹️

@@cottoverdi so sorry you lost your Amistad salvia. It was such a strange winter for me. I lost a rose, 2 buddleias, a fatsia, a phormium, a lavatera, a choisya, a clump of osteospermum, and I thought a Eucalyptus- all very mature plants. However my salvia Amsiatad and salvia purple night ( I think that's what it is called) survived as did some dahlias- they have been in the ground for several years. I di fold some fleece over the cut down stalks of the salvia, so maybe that helped? I have found a source of Salvia Icing sugar so have ordered. Very excites. I also ordered a beautiful salvia macrophylla Aphrodite, a couple of weeks ago which arrived a few days ago. Looking forward to seeing it bloom soon, I hope. I am waiting for a Cana Cleopatra and a black stemmed hydrangea to arrive. I just can't help myself when I see a beautiful plant. When Peter Nyssen get their dahlia stock in, I am going to ordered Otto's thrill- it looks so beautiful. I missed it this year. Are there any 'perennial' tulips you could recommend? I think the Darin varieties re the best for rfeturning for some years, is that right? Thank you again, sorry for the rambling but I am so passionate about plants that it is lovely to be able to chat to like mindede people) Happy gardening 🙂 x

Hi Cheryl, I'm so happy you enjoyed the video - I've added even more salvias to my garden this year. Sarah Raven says that they go particularly well with roses, so that's where I've included them. They really are so pretty and come in such a variety of colours. Thanks for watching. Annette 🌸

Hi Michael, I'm so glad you found the video helpful. I love salvias too and have added even more to my garden this year, plus I had to replace my Amistad because I thought I'd lost them all and I was incredibly sad about it but a few have bounced back, thank goodness. Thanks for watching. Annette 🌱

Thank you for this great video!! I’m going to try this. I bought 4 Indiglo Girl salvias which are purple, but 2 turned out to be pink, wrong tags were in those pots. I was going to buy more of the purple, but now I can try to propagate instead! Thank you! Love your video!

I’m a newb gardener but this just makes it more addictive!😅 Is it ok to take cuttings from a newer plant? I got my hands on a Amistad from eBay last month and it looks really healthy and started flowering now but it’s only about a foot and a half tall? Do you still put a bag over them if you are leaving them outside? 🤔
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
You can take cuttings from any plant as long as it's a non-flowering shoot. If you're leaving them outside, they will need to have some type of cover to keep the moisture in until the roots form - and do try to ensure they aren't sitting in the sun.

Hi Annette, I have struck some salvia Amistad cuttings successfully in a bright place indoors & they are growing away well. I need to pot them up…can I cut them back as they are a bit leggy. By about ½? And then they could go in my just frost free GH? Just found your channel, and have subscribed. Do you open your garden for the NGS? I love walled gardens!
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi 6 ай бұрын
Hi there, no, We don't open the garden at the moment but we definitely hope to open it for NGS one day... If your salvia have a few sets of leaves, then you can cut them back to a leaf node BUT, little new plants benefit from having all their leaves (increased surface area for photosynthesis and therefore more energy), so only cut them back or pinch them if absolutely necessary. Good luck!

Is it possible to propagate a large branch? My Amistad has a very large branch that has started to grow into some other flowers, and is pretty close to the ground.

Hi. Will using my own compost (like the one I use for throwing vegetable waste into) would that be fine to use or is it better to use one from a hardware store instead for growing cuttings?
@cottoverdi
@cottoverdi Жыл бұрын
Hi there, yes, it is definitely possible to use your own home-made compost, but you may struggle with weed seedlings that will probably be present and start to grow - just pluck them out as soon as you see them. Ideally, the shop-bought compost is better because it is usually sterilised and so will not have any weed seeds in it. 🌸🌿💚
